Triggering and modulation of the host-parasite interplay by Echinococcus multilocularis: a review.

As more facts emerge regarding the ways in which E. multilocularis-derived molecules trigger the host immune response and modulate the host-parasite interplay, it becomes possible to envisage how the parasite can survive and proliferate in its intermediate host, while in other hosts it dies out. Through effects on cells of both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune response, E. multilocularis can orchestrate a range of outcomes that are beneficial not only to the parasite, in terms of facilitating its intrahepatic proliferation and maturation, and thus life cycle over all, but also to its

[Defense mechanisms of Taeniidae against host immune response].

The defense mechanisms of Taeniidae against host immune reaction were reviewed. The parasites may defend themselves from the host's immune attack by: (1)producing specific biochemicals as barriers against the damage caused by immune reactions, (2) changing surface antigens and secreting some active substances that interfere and deconstruct host's immune system and other hazards, (3) self-disguising through synthesizing homologies to host's substances in structure or function in order to avoid the immune surveillance of the host.

The broad spectrum of Trichinella hosts: from cold- to warm-blooded animals.

In recent years, studies on Trichinella have shown that the host range is wider than previously believed and new Trichinella species and genotypes have been described. Three classes of vertebrates are known to act as hosts, mammals, birds and reptiles, and infected vertebrates have been detected on all continents but Antarctica. Mammals represent the most important hosts and all Trichinella species are able to develop in this vertebrate class. Natural infections with Trichinella have been described in more than 150 mammalian species belonging to 12 orders (i.e., Marsupialia, Insectivora, Edent

Biology of the phylum nematomorpha.

Compared with most animal phyla, the Nematomorpha, also known as hair worms, is a relatively understudied metazoan phylum. Although nematomorphs make up only 1 of 3 animal phyla specializing solely on a parasitic life style, little attention has been focused on this enigmatic group scientifically. The phylum contains two main groups. The nectonematids are parasites of marine invertebrates such as hermit crabs. The gordiids are parasites of terrestrial arthropods, such as mantids, beetles, and crickets. Members of both of these groups are free-living as adults in marine and freshwaters respecti

Molecular and physiological insights into plague transmission, virulence and etiology.

Plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, which evolved from the enteric pathogen Y. pseudotuberculosis, which normally causes a chronic and relatively mild disease. Y. pestis is not only able to parasitize the flea but also highly virulent to rodents and humans, causing epidemics of a systemic and often fatal disease. Y. pestis could be used as a bio-weapon and for bio-terrorism. It uses a number of strategies that allow the pathogen to change its lifestyle rapidly to survive in fleas and to grow in the mammalian hosts. Extensive studies reviewed here give an overall picture of the determinants re

Oviposition strategies of conifer seed chalcids in relation to host phenology.

Insects are considered the most important predators of seed cones, the female reproductive structures of conifers, prior to seed dispersal. Slightly more than 100 genera of insects are known to parasitize conifer seed cones. The most diverse (i.e., number of species) of these genera is Megastigmus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), which comprises many important seed pests of native and exotic conifers. Seed chalcids, Megastigmus spp., lay eggs inside the developing ovules of host conifers and, until recently, oviposition was believed to occur only in fertilized ovules. Ovule development begins just af

A review of the North American species of Oropsylla Wagner and Ioff, 1926 (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae: Ceratophyllinae).

The North American species of the flea genus Oropsylla are reviewed and their host/parasite relationships and distribution are discussed, as well as their role in the maintenance and transmission of sylvatic plague. Keys to the subgenera and species are presented and illustrations of their diagnostic characteristics are included.

A phylogenetic hypothesis for species of the genus Taenia (Eucestoda : Taeniidae).

Cladistic analysis of a numerical data matrix describing 27 characters for species of Taenia resulted in 4 most parsimonious phylogenetic trees (174 steps; consistency index = 0.28; homoplasy index = 0.72; retention index = 0.48). Monophyly for Taenia is diagnosed by the metacestode that is either a cysticercus or a form derived from a bladder-like larva; no other unequivocal synapomorphies are evident. Tree structure provides no support for recognition of a diversity of tribes or genera within the Taeniinae: Fimbriotaeniini and Taeniini have no phylogenetic basis. Hydatigera, Fimbriotaenia, F

Effect of aprotinin on Schistosoma mansoni miracidial penetration into biomphalaria Alexandrina.

The effect of aprotinin on Schistosoma mansoni miracidial penetration process, by its direct topical application on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, was studied The snails were exposed to S. mansoni miracidial suspension which was mixed with aprotinin at concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 20 Kallikrein inactivator units (KIU)/ml of applied solution. Results showed that aprotinin had marked inhibitory effect on miracidial penetration of the snails. The concentration that resulted in 50% inhibition of the miracidial penetration into B. alexandrina snails (LD50) was 2.4 KIU/ml while (LD96) was 2

[Ecology of flea groups of the species conformis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae: Xenopsylla) of the fauna of Russia and adjacent countries (review)].

Within the boundaries of the former USSR, the northern part of the conformis group distribution is located. It spreads over the arid regions of the Trans-Cacucasus, Pricaspijckaja lowland, Kazakhstan and Middle Asia. In this area 10 species and subspecies occur. They are mainly parasites of gerbillins. Unlike many other Siphonaptera the conformis fleas, when in the host's home, do not concentrate in the nest but inhabit the passages of burrow and food chambers throughout the year. On this reason the preimaginal development and existence of the adults take place not at the temperature of the ha

Virulence, parasite mode of transmission, and host fluctuating asymmetry.

Horizontally transmitted parasites are broadly predicted to be more virulent, or costly to host fitness, than those with vertical transmission. This is mainly because vertical transmission, from host parent to offspring, explicitly links the reproductive interests of both parties. Underlying this prediction is a general assumption that parasite transmission success is positively correlated with its virulence. We report results where infection of larval yellow fever mosquitoes Aedes aegypti with the microsporidian Edhazardia aedis was experimentally manipulated. The parasite's complex life cycl

Acquired resistance of merino sheep against Fasciola gigantica.

Merino sheep acquired resistance against Fasciola gigantica, which is contrary to previous observations of infections with F. hepatica in that breed. The acquired resistance was manifest against young adult parasites. St. Croix sheep had previously been shown to have more resistance than European sheep against F. hepatica after primary infection; however, in F. gigantica infections in the present study there was no difference between the resistance levels of the breeds. Antigenic analysis of the host:parasite relationships could lead to identification of protective antigens suitable for use as

Human cysticercosis: parasitology, pathology, clinical manifestations and available treatment.

Human cysticercosis is a global health problem and neurocysticercosis a serious clinical syndrome. The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis can now be made with a high degree of accuracy by scrutiny of clinical signs and symptoms in combination with X-ray, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, serological tests and laboratory examinations. Differential clinical diagnosis with tumor, and vascular and inflammatory conditions, may however, prove difficult in nonendemic areas. The management of cysticercosis has been radically changed by the advent of effective chemotherapy. Both the heter

Host-parasite relationships in amebiasis: conference report.

Entamoeba histolytica has been redescribed as the separate species E. histolytica and Entamoeba dispar. E. dispar is apparently never invasive in humans, while E. histolytica is the etiologic agent of amebic colitis and liver abscess. Virulence factors that may enable E. histolytica to invade include a galactose-specific adhesin, secreted proteases, extracellular matrix receptors, and a cell surface lipophosphoglycan. Progress in vaccine development includes the identification of the cysteine-rich domain of the adhesin and the serine-rich surface protein as protective antigens.

Observations and reflections on the immature stages of Onchocerca volvulus in the human host.

Knowledge of the morphology, migrations and development rates of the L3, L4 and prepubertal L5 stages of Onchocerca volvulus in the vertebrate host is an essential prerequisite to work vaccine development of chemoprophylaxis. After a brief review of the scanty literature available on this subject a description is given of two immature worms, one male and one female, found in an O. volvulus nodule from Guatemala. The male, which measured 12 mm x 40 micron(s), had fine regular transverse cuticular annulations, two prominent spicules, and an undifferentiated testis. The female, which measured 20

New observations on cyclical development of Trypanosoma vivax in Glossina.

It is widely held that cyclical development of Trypanosoma vivax in Glossina is confined to the proboscis. This view has been re-examined in a series of experiments. Teneral G. morsitans centralis were fed on a goat infected with T. vivax IL 1392 and dissected 1-2 h after feeding. The infection rates in the labrum and hypopharynx were 40% and 0%, in contrast to 82% and 58%, respectively, observed in a control group dissected on day 25. This suggested that in a significant number of tsetse, cyclical development of T. vivax was initiated at sites other than the proboscis. Subsequent experiments
