How a broken vertebra can lead to a fatal hemorrhage: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional falls are common among the elderly and given the expected increase of the aging population, these falls contribute to a high number of admissions to the emergency department. Relatively low-energy trauma mechanisms can lead to serious injuries in the elderly, with contributing factors being comorbidities, medication use and degenerative abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: A 94-year-old female suffered an unintentional fall at home. Upon arrival of the ambulance at her house she was hemodynamically stable and mobilized to the gurney with assistance. During primary surve

Human (in)security and psychological well-being in Palestinian children living amidst military violence: A qualitative participatory research using interactive maps.

BACKGROUND: Research has widely evidenced the effects of war and political violence on the functioning of children, with a great accord in diagnosing children's psychological burdens related to their exposure to violence. Yet, within this literature, the influence of the chronic sense of insecurity on their psychological functioning during and after hostilities remains unexplored. METHODS: The present study aimed at exploring interrelated relationships between the perceived insecurity and the children's psychological well-being and their adjustment to trauma. Based on drawings and walk-along

Evidence based practice guidelines for management of low back pain: physical therapy implications.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common disorder seen in physical therapy practice. There are several hundred clinical trials on the management of LBP. To summarize these trials, researchers wrote Evidence Based Practice (EBP) guidelines. This article reviewed the implications of EBP guidelines recommendations for physical therapy practice. OBJECTIVES: To review the recommendations for conservative management of LBP published in EBP guidelines since 2002. METHODS: Searches were performed on the following databases: Google web searching engine, Medline, Cochrane Library, and the Gu

"Are we moving again this week?" Children's experiences of homelessness in Victoria, Australia.

This research aimed to gain insight into the homelessness experience of children accommodated in transitional support services in an urban setting in Australia. It joins a limited international literature. Interviews incorporating interactive activities were conducted with 20 children aged 6-12 from diverse ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, most of whom were living in supported accommodation. Twelve parents/guardians were also interviewed. Children had experienced between 3 and 11 changes of residence, including hotels or motels, refuges, sleeping rough or in cars, rooming or boarding hous

Validation of a Circulating Tumor DNA-Based Next-Generation Sequencing Assay in a Cohort of Patients with Solid tumors: A Proposed Solution for Decentralized Plasma Testing.

BACKGROUND: Characterization of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has been integrated into clinical practice. Although labs have standardized validation procedures to develop single locus tests, the efficacy of on-site plasma-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays still needs to be proved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we profiled DNA from matched tissue and plasma samples from 75 patients with cancer. We applied an NGS test that detects clinically relevant alterations in 33 genes and microsatellite instability (MSI) to analyze plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA). RESULTS:

"My story is good… It's not like that for all": Uneven access to contraception among incarcerated women in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates high levels of unmet contraceptive need among justice-involved women, linked to intersecting vulnerabilities such as housing instability, substance use, violence and poor mental health. In Australia, limited research has explored how women in prison navigate access to family planning services. This study aimed to examine the experiences of incarcerated women in New South Wales (NSW) in accessing contraception and making fertility-related decisions. METHODS: The study formed part of the Second Sexual Health and Attitudes of Australian Prisoners (SHAAP-2) study. S…

Data Resource Profile: The Age-It Family Demography Survey (Age-It FDS).

INTRODUCTION: Italy has recently witnessed profound transformations in family dynamics, including delayed union formation, rising cohabitation, increasing relationship instability, and postponed parenthood. These shifts have occurred alongside persistently lowest-low fertility rates and a growing use of medically assisted reproduction (MAR). Existing Italian datasets do not simultaneously capture these new family dynamics, nor do they address other emerging themes such as online dating patterns, MAR experiences and trajectories, and the forward-looking narratives through which individuals inte

Mapping needles, reducing harm: Findings from a geospatial, community-based needle collection and naloxone training initiative in Saskatchewan, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis is a major public health issue in Canada, with prairie provinces such as Saskatchewan experiencing particularly high rates of opioid-related harms. Factors contributing to this crisis include an unstable drug supply, limited access to harm reduction services, and structural challenges such as poverty and housing instability. The rise of fentanyl has further exacerbated overdose risks, particularly among people who use drugs. Harm reduction programs, such as opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution, have proven effective in reducing overdose fatalities a…

Understanding barriers and facilitators of inter-organizational dynamics in addressing substance use disorder among pregnant and parenting women.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders (SUDs) face complex and overlapping challenges, including substance use, legal issues, housing instability, and trauma. Effective interorganizational collaboration is critical but often hindered by fragmented care and resource limitations. This study explores the key barriers and facilitators that impact collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations in addressing SUD among pregnant and parenting women. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in New York State betwee…

Evaluation of oxidative stress and genetic instability among residents near mobile phone base stations in Germany.

Human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) is restricted to prevent thermal effects in the tissue. However, at very low intensity exposure "non-thermal" biological effects, like oxidative stress, DNA or chromosomal aberrations, etc. collectively termed genomic-instability can occur after few hours. Little is known about chronic (years long) exposure with non-thermal RF-EMF. We identified two neighboring housing estates in a rural region with residents exposed to either relatively low (control-group) or relatively high (exposed-group) RF-EMF emitted from nearby mobile phon

Harm Reduction Principles in a Street Medicine Program: A Qualitative Study.

There is ample evidence that homelessness is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Street Medicine seeks to eliminate these disparities by providing healthcare on the streets to people who are unsheltered. While extant research describes health disparities for the unsheltered and programmatic approaches to addressing housing instability, there are few published studies describing how healthcare providers build and maintain relationships with patients on the street. This insight is central to specifying how street medicine differs from traditional forms of care and defining asp…
