Changes in amino acid (AA) levels have been observed in women with pre-eclampsia, but data on their newborns are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate 11 AAs in newborns of 378 PE and 18,666 non-PE pregnant women. We found that the levels of alanine, arginine, glycine, methionine, phenylalanine, valine, and leucine/isoleucine/hydroxyproline in newborns of PE women were significantly higher than those of non-PE women, whereas the level of tyrosine was lower. A case history of a pregnant patient with the Marfan syndrome is presented. During pregnancy regular echocardiographic examinations were performed, showing a slight increase in the aortic root diameter 1 month after delivery. The hydroxyproline content of the amniotic fluid appeared to be significantly elevated; however, the baby did not seem to be affected by the Marfan syndrome. After delivery we noted a recto-vaginal perforation, which has not been described in deliveries of Marfan patients before. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Liver biopsy, the current clinical gold standard for fibrosis assessment, is invasive and has sampling errors, and is not optimal for screening, monitoring, or clinical decision-making. Fibrosis is characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins including type I collagen. We hypothesize that molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a probe targeted to type I collagen could provide a direct and non-invasive method of fibrosis assessment.
