Changes in the upper airway after surgical correction of Class III skeletal dentofacial deformity were investigated by measurement of the cephalometric radiographs of 70 Class III subjects before surgery and 6 months after surgery. Comparison of the results with those of a normal group of 74 subjects without deformity or surgery was also carried out. Gender dimorphism in measurements and type of surgery performed were taken into account. Results showed that postoperatively the soft palate and hyoid bone were posteriorly displaced in men, the oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and minimal airway de…

PURPOSE: This study was performed to compare the dimensions of the nasopharynx, oropharnynx, and hypopharynx of persons with hyperdivergent … rly and posteriorly in the hyperdivergent group, as evidenced by the increased distance between the hyoid bone and the mandibular plane and the increased distance between the soft palate tip and the epiglottis. The hyperdivergent group had more retruded maxillary and mandibular apical bases and a higher Class II skeletal discrepancy.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are the most common congenital cysts in the neck. TGDC typically present as a midline swelling anywhere between the foramen cecum and the isthmus of the thyroid gland. Majority occurs just below the hyoid bone and those descending below the thyrohyoid membrane are rare. TGDC are usually less than 3 cm in diameter while big cysts are uncommon. We present a 19 years old female patient who presented with giant (12 cm diameter) supra-sternal notch cyst which was diagnosed as TGDC only after histopathology. The rarity of such huge TGDC in such uncommon site, which was…

Salivary fistulas are frequent complications in oral oncological reconstructive surgery by means of pedicled or free flaps. The most common risk factors are malnutrition, advanced disease, and healing alterations due to radiation therapy or infections. However, they can be observed also in healthy patients where the flap suture breakdown is the only cause. During the reconstructive phase, flaps are anchored to the remnant tongue, hyoid bone, and residual gingival mucosa; the last structure often does not offer suitable margins for a strong suture. The aim of this study was to propose a transma…

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis is a multi-system autoimmune disease characterised by the inflammation and destruction of cartilaginous … options.
METHODS: Laryngotracheal reconstruction for relapsing polychondritis was performed using hyoid bone pedicled on sternohyoid muscle.
CONCLUSION: Airway management in relapsing polychondritis can improve quality of life and palliate patients effectively.

Thyroglossal duct carcinoma is a rare malignancy that is usually diagnosed postoperatively. Approximately 150 cases have been reported in the literature. Eighty-five percent of these were papillary carcinomas. Controversies exist concerning its nature and treatment. In this report, we present an 11-year-old boy with an anterior cervical cystic mass originating in the thyroglossal duct. After a primary Sistrunk procedure, the cyst and tract extending to the foramen caecum at the base of the tongue in continuity with the midportion of the hyoid bone were resected. Histopathologic study demonstra…

The submental and submandibular regions play an essential role in the overall harmony of facial aesthetics. The appearance of the cervicomental area may be the result of many factors, including mandibular hypoplasia, localized lipodystrophy, a low-positioned hyoid bone, platysmal deformity, soft tissue laxity, or a combination of any of these. Although much attention has been directed toward correction of bony contour deformities of the mandible and chin, minimal emphasis has been placed on evaluation and correction of soft tissue disharmonies in the submental-submandibular areas. This article…

Strangulation accounts for up to 10% of violent or criminally related deaths in the United States annually. Strangulation techniques include hanging, throttling, garrotting, and chokeholds. These methods are thought to cause unconsciousness or death by compression of either the airway or the major vessels of the neck. A review of the records of 112 nonsurvivors and 59 survivors of strangulation revealed that hyoid bone and laryngotracheal fractures occurred in both groups, particularly in throttling victims. The laryngeal injuries themselves could not be implicated as the cause of death, and s…

PURPOSE: Epiglottic mineralisation is an uncommon anatomical variant whose embryological, histological, epidemiological, imaging and clinical implications are incompletely synthesised in the literature. We provide a narrative review of these topics, illustrated by an index case of almost complete epiglottic mineralisation identified on CT angiography.
METHODS: A case of incidentally detected epiglottic mineralisation on retrospective head-and-neck CT angiography was analysed using multiplanar reformations, maximum-intensity projections, bone-window images, and three-dimensional reconstruction

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia, or swallowing disorder, is a common complication following stroke, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Electromyographic biofeedback (EMGBF) therapy has emerged as a potential rehabilitation technique to improve swallowing function, but its efficacy in comparison with conventional treatments remains to be further explored.
AIM: To investigate the effects of different treatment intensities of EMGBF on swallowing function and motor speed after stroke.
METHODS: The participants were divided into three groups, all of which received routine neurological drug

Cervical orthosis is used to immobilize the neck in various disorders such as trauma and post-operation. However, it is still uncertain how cervical orthosis restricts the degree of movement of the cervical spine during swallowing and how they affect swallowing physiology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate these issues using the Philadelphia(®) Collar. We conducted videofluorography of swallowing in 39 healthy subjects (23 men, 16 women; mean age of 34.3 years) with and without cervical orthosis. To compare the two conditions regarding the cervical spine motion, we determined the angul

Within the peri-pharyngeal tissues the only bony structure is the hyoid bone and in adult humans this is a free-floating bone. Evidence already exists that the functional outcome of contraction of some of the pharyngeal muscles is dependent on stage of respiration, the intra-luminal pressure, or the position of the hyoid bon …

A 59-year-old man with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) underwent end-of-treatment 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrating asymmetric linear uptake along the right tongue extending to the anterior hyoid bone without a CT correlate. His history included obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) refractory to CPAP, treated with a right hypoglossal nerve stimulator (HNS). The 18 F-FDG PET/CT uptake was attributed to genioglossus muscle activation from neurostimulation. Increased 18 F-FDG activity in head and neck muscles is known to occur with mastication, tongue biting, denervation, inflammation, and benign or m…

When a body is found in suspended position, not only suicidal hanging has to be considered but also an accident or homicide. These alternatives and the criteria to be applied for their differentiation were already extensively discussed in the old medico-legal literature. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge for detectives and forensic experts to prove a homicidal assault when a suspended body is found. In the presented case, the findings collected at the scene and during autopsy seemed to be consistent with the assumption of suicide at first and the case has only been elucidated by supplement
