The dynamic bodily self across lifespan: Agency, ownership, and the plasticity of internal body models.

Two fundamental aspects of research on bodily self-consciousness, agency and body ownership, have recently seen exponential growth. The seminal paper of Botvinick and Cohen in 1998 provided a vital psychophysical tool for studying the bodily self - the rubber hand illusion, in which one feels as if an external object becomes a part of one's body. Recent motor control views of ownership highlight the influence of agency, the sense that one is in control of one's movements. Technological advancements have facilitated more ecologically valid experimental paradigms, such as virtual versions of the

Itch relief by mirror scratching. A psychophysical study.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to test whether central mechanisms of scratching-induced itch attenuation can be activated by scratching the limb contralateral to the itching limb when the participant is made to visually perceive the non-itching limb as the itching limb by means of mirror images. METHODS: Healthy participants were asked to assess the intensity of an experimentally induced itch at their right forearm while they observed externally guided scratch movements either at their right (itching) or left (non-itching) forearm which were either mirrored or not mirrored. In the firs

Motion-induced blindness in normal observers.

Cases in which salient visual stimuli do not register consciously are known to occur in special conditions, such as the presentation of dissimilar stimuli to the two eyes or when images are stabilized on the retina. Here, we report a striking phenomenon of 'visual disappearance' observed with normal-sighted observers under natural conditions. When a global moving pattern is superimposed on high-contrast stationary or slowly moving stimuli, the latter disappear and reappear alternately for periods of several seconds. We show that this motion-induced blindness (MIB) phenomenon is unlikely to ref

The effect of different types of mastoid vibration on vertical ground reaction force during walking in vision-available and vision-deprived environments.

Mastoid vibration (MV) is a non-invasive way to induce vestibular illusions. However, the influence of MV on gait kinetics during different visual conditions has not been well-established. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of different types of MV (bilateral vs unilateral) on vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during walking under both vision-available (VA) and vision-deprived (VD) conditions. Twenty healthy adults walked at their preferred speed on a pressure-sensor treadmill and vGRF characteristics (peak forces, impulses, loading/unloading rates, and variability) wer…

Cultural big data: nineteenth to twenty-first century panoramic visualization.

From the nineteenth-century panorama to the emergence of the digital panoramic format in the 1990's, the visualization of large images frequently relies on panoramic viewing strategies. Originally rendered in the form of epic painted canvases, these strategies are now amplified through gigapixel imaging, computer vision and machine learning. Whether for scientific analysis, dissemination, or to visualize cultural big data, panoramic strategies pivot on the illusion of immersion. The latter is achieved through human-centered design situated within a large-scale environment combined with a multi

Reversed Mirror Therapy (REMIT) after Stroke-A Proof-of-Concept Study.

In mirror training (MIT), stroke patients strive to move their hands while looking at the reflected image of the unaffected one. The recruitment of the mirror neurons and visual-proprioceptive conflict are expected to facilitate the paretic voluntary movement. Here, a reversed MIT (REMIT) is presented, which requires moving hands while looking at the reflected image of the paretic one, giving the illusion of being unable to move the unimpaired hand. This study compares MIT and REMIT on post-stroke upper-limb recovery to gain clues on the mechanism of action of mirror therapies. Eight chronic s

Body Ownership of Anatomically Implausible Hands in Virtual Reality.

Manipulating sensory and motor cues can cause an illusionary perception of ownership of a fake body part. Presumably, the illusion can work as long as the false body part's position and appearance are anatomically plausible. Here, we introduce an illusion that challenges past assumptions on body ownership. We used virtual reality to switch and mirror participants' views of their hands. When a participant moves their physical hand, they see the incongruent virtual hand moving. The result is an anatomically implausible configuration of the fake hand. Despite the hand switch, participants reporte

Human sensory cortex structure and top-down controlling brain network determine individual differences in perceptual alternations.

Bistable perception is a type of subjective perception that spontaneously alternates between two perceptual interpretations of an ambiguous sensory input. Past functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have examined the activation patterns underlying bistable perception, yet the variability between individuals in the alternations is not well understood. Therefore, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was introduced in this study to correlate the GM of the sensory cortex with the alternations of Rubin face-vase illusion in a large group of young adults. We found that the GM volume and densi

"Café-au-lait spots" caused by vitiligo in McCune-Albright syndrome.

Café-au-lait spots, fibrous dysplasia of bone, and endocrine gland hyperactivity are the principal features of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). Café-au-lait spots appear at, or soon after, birth. We illustrate "café-au-lait spots" acquired during middle age in a patient with MAS that are an illusion caused by vitiligo. This 64-year-old woman is the oldest patient reported with this disorder.

"Fake it till You Make it"! Contaminating Rubber Hands ("Multisensory Stimulation Therapy") to Treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a deeply enigmatic psychiatric condition associated with immense suffering worldwide. Efficacious therapies for OCD, like exposure and response prevention (ERP), are sometimes poorly tolerated by patients. As many as 25% of patients refuse to initiate ERP mainly because they are too anxious to follow exposure procedures. Accordingly, we proposed a simple and tolerable (immersive yet indirect) low-cost technique for treating OCD that we call "multisensory stimulation therapy." This method involves contaminating a rubber hand during the so-called "rubber ha

[Spontaneous Pulfrich's effect in patients with dysfunction of the optic nerve].

Twenty patients with various dysfunctions of the optic nerve were subjected to examinations by means of a test based on the Pulfrich's phenomenon. The Pulfrich's effect was observed in 18 among them. The survey of the phenomenon was continued in 5 patients in the course of the treatment. It was detected that the dimension of the spontaneous Pulfrich's illusion diminishes gradually tending towards norm. The results obtained assure us of the usefulness of the application of the Pulfrich's effect as a diagnostic test in ophthalmology and neurology.

Disentangling visually driven tactile predictions from multisensory integration in body ownership.

The sense of owning one's body is essential for distinguishing internal from external sensations. Research using bodily illusions shows that this sense depends on integrating visual, tactile and proprioceptive signals, yet the role of multisensory predictions remains unclear. We addressed this using a modified rubber hand illusion. Two robotic arms tapped the two visible rubber hands, while a third arm simultaneously tapped the participant's hidden real hand. One rubber hand received synchronous stimulation, while the other was stimulated with varying temporal delays. Visual feedback was manip…

Illusory Directional Sensation Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations Influences Sense of Agency and Velocity in Wrist Motions.

Illusory directional sensations are generated through asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips and have been utilized to induce upper-limb motions in the rehabilitation and training of patients with visual impairment. However, its effects on motor control remain unclear. This study aimed to verify the effects of illusory directional sensations on wrist motion. We conducted objective and subjective evaluations of wrist motion during a motor task, while inducing an illusory directional sensation that was congruent or incongruent with wrist motion. We found that, when motion and illusory d

A Cost-Effective Inertial Measurement System for Tracking Movement and Triggering Kinesthetic Feedback in Lower-Limb Prosthesis Users.

Advances in lower-limb prosthetic technologies have facilitated the restoration of ambulation; however, users of such technologies still experience reduced balance control, also due to the absence of proprioceptive feedback. Recent efforts have demonstrated the ability to restore kinesthetic feedback in upper-limb prosthesis applications; however, technical solutions to trigger the required muscle vibration and provide automated feedback have not been explored for lower-limb prostheses. The study's first objective was therefore to develop a feedback system capable of tracking lower-limb moveme

Event-Related Potentials Elicited by Face and Face Pareidolia in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is associated with impaired ability to recognize emotional facial expressions. In addition to a visual processing disorder, a visual recognition disorder may be involved in these patients. Pareidolia is a type of complex visual illusion that permits the interpretation of a vague stimulus as something known to the observer. Parkinson's patients experience pareidolic illusions. N170 and N250 waveforms are two event-related potentials (ERPs) involved in emotional facial expression recognition. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated how Parkinson's patients proc…

Structure rhinoplasty of the long nose.

Rhinoplasty modifies the aesthetic appearance and functional properties of the nose with operative manipulation of the skin, underlying cartilage, bone, and linings. A long nose is an aesthetically undesired feature disturbing the harmony of the face. The underlying pathology of the long nose may be due to either a long septum that invades the lip or dislocation of the alar cartilages downward from the aponeurotic attachments to the septal angle. The increase in the nasal height due to a dorsal nasal hump may give an illusion of a long nose. An absent or shallow frontonasal angle also gives th

[Cartilaginous grafts in primary rhinoplasty].

In staging and performing secondary iatrogenous or post-traumatic rhinoplasty, it has clearly been shown that the use of grafts plays a key role in reconstructing the defective or missing anatomical parts. On the other hand, in primary rhinoplasty, in general the one prevailing concept is removal of the osteo-cartilage to shape the nose. However, in order to achieve a good balance between aesthetics of the various parts of the nasal pyramid and their coherence with the face as a whole, it is often necessary to add at one or more points so that you can remove less elsewhere. In effect, a natura
