The primary antibody deficiency syndromes are characterised by recurrent respiratory tract infections and the inability to produce effective immunoglobulin (Ig) responses. The best-known primary antibody deficiencies are common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA), immunoglobulin G (IgG) subclass deficiency, and selective antibody deficiency with normal immunoglobulins (SADNI). Therapy in these patients consists of prophylactic antibiotics and/or Ig replacement therapy. Diagnostic delay remains common owing to limited awareness of the presenting features and may

Both acquired and congenital immunodeficiencies may be associated with increased susceptibility to invasive fungal infections (IFIs), depending on the type of immune deficit. IFIs frequently occur in patients with phagocytic and cellular immune defects, but are rarely observed in those with humoral or complement deficits. Among congenital immune disorders, chronic granulomatous disease and hyper-IgE syndrome are most frequently associated with IFIs; variable susceptibility to fungal pathogens is also seen in patients with severe combined immunodeficiency, X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome, Wiskott-A

The posters presented at the 6th International Immunoglobulin Symposium covered a wide range of fields and included both basic science and clinical research. From the abstracts accepted for poster presentation, 12 abstracts were selected for oral presentations in three parallel sessions on immunodeficiencies, autoimmunity and basic research. The immunodeficiency presentations dealt with novel, rare class-switch recombination (CSR) deficiencies, attenuation of adverse events following IVIg treatment, association of immunoglobulin (Ig)G trough levels and protection against acute infection in pat

Griscelli syndrome is a rare disease characterized by pigment dilution, partial albinism, variable cellular immunodeficiency, and an acute phase of uncontrolled T-lymphocyte, and macrophage activation. Griscelli et al described this syndrome in 1978. Since then, only in approximately 60 cases have been reported, most from the Turkish, and Mediterranean population. In microscopic examination, silvery gray hair with large, clumped melanosomes on the hair shaft is the diagnostic finding. Here, we present scanning electron microscopic study of hair in 2 cases of Griscelli syndrome, where the hair

Lymphoproliferative disorders and selected carcinomas which occur as complications of primary or secondary immunodeficiencies are frequently fatal. The incidence rates of these cancers vary from 1% to as high as 25% among specific groups of persons with primary (genetically-determined) immunodeficiencies as well as acquired immunodeficiencies, including immunosuppressed organ transplant recipients and individuals infected with HIV. Lymphoproliferative disorders including Epstein Barr virus (EBV) associated B cell lymphoproliferative disease (BLPD) and Hodgkin's disease represent the predominan

A new retrovirus was recently discovered in cats affected with an immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The virus shows morphological and biological similarities with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS in human individuals. As the T-lymphocyte is the primary target of the virus, it is termed Feline T-Lymphotropic Lentivirus (FTLV). FTLV is not antigenically related to HIV. Transmission of the virus from animals to human subjects has not been recorded. Cats infected with this virus showed lymphadenopathy, leukopenia, anorexia, chronic stomatitis/gingivitis and other opportuni

Sera from 106 blood donors, 40 patients with primary immunodeficiencies (ID) treated with gamma-globulin, and 46 patients with selective IgA deficiency were analyzed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for anti-IgA antibodies. Increased levels of antibodies to IgA were found in 5.6% of the blood donors, 17.5% of the ID patients, and 36.8% of the isolated IgA deficiencies. The percentage was higher in patients with IgA and IgG2 deficiencies (50%). The percentage of patients having increased levels of anti-IgA antibodies was similar to the total prevalence of the 10 other autoantibodies stud

Patients suffering from lepromatous leprosy fail to develop an efficient cell-mediated immunity towards Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent. The mechanism of such a specific T-cell tolerance to the bacillus remains a key question in the pathophysiology of leprosy. Macrophages do not show any intrinsic defect in phagocytizing and killing M. leprae or in presenting antigen to helper T-cells. On the other hand, M. leprae-reactive helper T-cells do persist in lepromatous patients, but their activation appears to prevented by active suppressor mechanisms, involving both suppressor T-cells and

Two brothers with Omenn's disease were seen at the University of Wisconsin. The first died at 3 months. The second developed a chronic measles infection from vaccination with a live virus to which he did not produce an antibody. He received transfer factor and irradiated leukocyte infusions without benefit. After death a lymphoma was found in virtually all tissues. It is unclear whether the treatment predisposed the child to or caused the cancer. Omenn's disease is an autosomal-recessive disorder of the immune system that leads to early death. The pathogenesis remains unknown.

The authors have studied the significance of factors of the humoral non-specific defense (HND) in 37 patients with cicatricial constrictions of the oesophagus and stomach. The data obtained were used for choosing the optimum terms for gastrostoma and oesophagoplasty. In 14 patients treatment with lysozyme was performed due to decreased indices of HND.

Abnormalities of adenosine deaminase, a critical enzyme of the purine salvage pathway, have been reported in association with immune dysfunction, acute leukemia, and hereditary hemolytic anemia. We report data showing that erythrocyte adenosine deaminase activity is also abnormal in congenital hypoplastic anemia (the Diamond-Blackfan syndrome). Adenosine deaminase activity in erythrocytes from 12 patients (mean +/- S.D., 2.20 +/- 0.77 IU per gram of hemoglobin) was substantially greater than that observed in 50 controls (0.62 +/- 0.13 IU per gram). Enzyme activity in affected patients was also

Three males in a large kindred died of meningococcal infections. In the index patient, properdin (P) was not detectable in serum. Two healthy males with a selective P deficiency were found in the family. There was no general susceptibility to infections, nor to other diseases as suggested by the family history. The serum bactericidal activity for Neisseria meningitidis group C, isolated from the index patient, was moderately reduced in P deficient serum, and was improved by addition of purified P.
