From guidelines to practice: Operational criteria for identifying old-growth forests in northern Europe.

Primary and old-growth forests are globally valued for their biodiversity, ecosystem services, and cultural significance. The EU biodiversity strategy and EU forest strategy for 2030 require strict protection of remaining primary and old-growth forests, yet they cover only about 3% of EU forest area and remain highly threatened. The European Commission's guidelines define old-growth forests using three main indicators-native tree species, deadwood, and large/old trees-supported by four complementary indicators. Implementing these indicators for boreal and hemiboreal old-growth forests in Europ

State of the clinical science of perioperative brain health: report from the American Society of Anesthesiologists Brain Health Initiative Summit 2018.

Cognitive recovery after anaesthesia and surgery is a concern for older adults, their families, and caregivers. Reports of patients who were 'never the same' prompted a scientific inquiry into the nature of what patients have experienced. In June 2018, the ASA Brain Health Initiative held a summit to discuss the state of the science on perioperative cognition, and to create an implementation plan for patients and providers leveraging the current evidence. This group included representatives from the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons), American College of Surgeons, Amer

Toward a Field That Prevents Harm Before It Begins: A Reflection and Research Agenda for Interpersonal Violence Prevention.

Interpersonal violence research has established the profound developmental, relational, and societal consequences of violence; the next challenge is preventing harm before it occurs. This commentary honors Jon Conte's contributions to the field by advancing a 5-year research and practice agenda that positions corporal punishment and No Hit Zones within a broader, integrated framework for interpersonal violence prevention. Drawing on ecological, public health, social norms, and implementation science perspectives, it identifies priorities for investigating mechanisms of norm change, bystander i…

Tailoring KDIGO guidelines for lupus nephritis to the real world: a stratified and cost-aware approach.

Translating the 2024 KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) lupus nephritis (LN) guideline update into routine care remains chall … ting clinical response kinetics, serological markers, and histological chronicity. Second, we apply implementation science frameworks to identify diagnostic and therapeutic gaps. Finally, we outline a value-based approach to evaluate the use of biologics and small molecules in terms of short- and long-term clinical outcomes and economic sustainability. Together, these s …

Direct to psychology for sleep disorders: Innovating models of care in the hospital and health service.

A 'Direct to Psychology Insomnia' pathway was developed for implementation within a multidisciplinary sleep disorders service in a tertiary hospital in Brisbane, Australia. The project was informed by implementation science principles and methodology to re-design the model of care (MoC). A consensus group workshop using the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) with 12 multidisciplinary staff was undertaken to develop the new MoC. The workshop explored inclusion and exclusion criteria for a Direct to Psychology pathway including patient flow and enablers. The team endorsed a MoC that was acceptable to…

Association Between Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs and Nonfatal and Fatal Drug Overdoses: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are a key component of the president's Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Plan to prevent opioid overdoses in the United States. PURPOSE: To examine whether PDMP implementation is associated with changes in nonfatal and fatal overdoses; identify features of programs differentially associated with those outcomes; and investigate any potential unintended consequences of the programs. DATA SOURCES: Eligible publications from MEDLINE, Current Contents Connect (Clarivate Analytics), Science Citation Index (Clarivate Analytics), Social Scie

The Translational Science Benefits Model: A New Framework for Assessing the Health and Societal Benefits of Clinical and Translational Sciences.

We report the development of the Translational Science Benefits Model (TSBM), a framework designed to support institutional assessment of clinical and translational research outcomes to measure clinical and community health impacts beyond bibliometric measures. The TSBM includes 30 specific and potentially measurable indicators that reflect benefits that accrue from clinical and translational science research such as products, system characteristics, or activities. Development of the TSBM was based on literature review, a modified Delphi method, and in-house expert panel feedback. Three case s

Biosensor Technologies and Smart Dressings for Chronic Wound Monitoring: A Systematic Review.

Chronic wound assessment remains largely subjective and time-consuming. Although advances in biosensors and smart dressings enable objective, continuous monitoring of key parameters, with earlier detection of complications and improved efficiency in wound management, their translation into clinical practice remains limited. This systematic review synthesises current evidence on advantages, barriers and facilitators influencing the adoption of biosensor-based and smart dressing technologies for chronic wound monitoring, using an implementation science perspective. A systematic search of PubMed …

The results of surgical treatment of patients with occlusive and stenosing lesions of brachiocephalic arteries implemented at Burdenko's Research Institute of Neurosurgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS) during 1999-2002 are described. A total of 164 operations were made in 128 patients. Different diagnostic methods and indications for various types of reconstructive and revascularization surgeries are under discussion. A variety of the carotid endarterectomy techniques and the conditions needed for their implementation (microsurgical equipment and intraoperative multi-modali

Global policy approaches to combat early childhood caries: a scoping review with evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a major global public health concern disproportionately affecting young children, particularly in low-resource settings. Although several clinical and community-based interventions have been implemented, the contribution of policy measures in addressing ECC remains insufficiently explored at the global level. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify, describe, and map policy approaches adopted across countries for the prevention and management of ECC. METHODS: The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework and adhered to the PRISMA-S

"Like a frog boiling in water": A qualitative analysis of stress, vicarious trauma, and mental health among forensic sciences professionals.

Forensic science professionals play a crucial role in the criminal justice system, but due to the nature of forensic science careers, exposure to traumatic material and occupational stressors remains common within the profession. The impacts of these aspects of the career field are not negligible, with prior research suggesting that forensic science professionals experience various forms of psychological distress, including but not limited to burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder, secondary traumatic stress, and vicarious trauma. The present study sought to analyze open-ended responses to su

Bridging the Gap between Intent and Implementation: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review of Barriers and Enablers of Shared Decision Making in Postmastectomy Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Postmastectomy breast reconstruction (PMBR) is a preference-sensitive decision that requires alignment between clinical evidence and patient values. Shared decision making (SDM) supports patient-centered care, yet its systematic implementation in PMBR remains inconsistent. This mixed-methods systematic review synthesizes barriers and facilitators to SDM adoption and identifies strategies to improve decision quality, patient experience, and equity. METHODS: A systematic review was preregistered (OSF: https://osf.io/mu9hv) and conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Six

Adolescents' Perceptions of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Service at Pediatric Trauma Centers.

OBJECTIVE: Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for adolescent alcohol and drug (AOD) use is recommended to occur with adolescents admitted to pediatric trauma centers. Most metrics on SBIRT service delivery only reference medical record documentation. In this analysis we examined changes in adolescents' perception of SBIRT services and concordance of adolescent-report and medical record data, among a sample of adolescents admitted before and after institutional SBIRT implementation. METHODS: We implemented SBIRT for adolescent AOD use using the Science to Service
