Threat processing in women with bulimia.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments are the most commonly used approaches for bulimia nervosa. However, these treatments tend to produce only moderate remission rates. Therefore, it is useful to consider how experimental cognitive approaches can help to revise current cognitive-behavioral models of bulimia. Information processing models highlight the role of attentional biases and schema avoidance in the etiology and maintenance of pathology. This review considers how these processes relate to bulimia. In particular, a growing body of evidence suggests that bulimic behaviors may function to "block

Individual differences in the development of self-regulation during pre-adolescence: connections to context and adjustment.

Difficulties with self-regulation are implicated in the development of emotional and behavioral problems during adolescence. Although children's ability to regulate their behaviors continues to improve throughout childhood and adolescence, it remains unclear how contextual risk factors might influence this development during the transition to adolescence, or how variation in the development of self-regulation predicts adjustment. Using a community sample of 214 8-12 year-olds (T1 M = 9.5, SD = 1.01), we examined growth trajectories of effortful control and impulsivity over three years and test

Sex-dependent associations between addiction-related behaviors and the microbiome in outbred rats.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors contribute to the etiology of addiction, including genetics, sex, and a number of addiction-related behavioral traits. One behavioral trait where individuals assign incentive salience to food stimuli ("sign-trackers", ST) are more impulsive compared to those that do not ("goal-trackers", GT), as well as more sensitive to drugs and drug stimuli. Furthermore, this GT/ST phenotype predicts differences in other behavioral measures. Recent studies have implicated the gut microbiota as a key regulator of brain and behavior, and have shown that many microbiota-associated

Poor infant inhibitory control predicts food fussiness in childhood - A possible protective role of n-3 PUFAs for vulnerable children.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

The role of the pediatrician in preventing suicidal behavior.

Suicidality is a serious cause of morbidity and mortality among young people. Important risk factors for suicidal behavior are mental illness, alcohol and other substance use disorders, previous suicide attempt, impulsive and/or aggressive behavior, history of abuse, and access to lethal means. Emotional well-being and connectedness to family and school act to buffer or protect young people from involvement in self-directed violence. Pediatricians can play a major role in suicide prevention by identifying emotional and behavioral problems and intervening appropriately, promoting positive paren

X-linked borderline mental retardation with prominent behavioral disturbance: phenotype, genetic localization, and evidence for disturbed monoamine metabolism.

We have identified a large Dutch kindred with a new form of X-linked nondysmorphic mild mental retardation. All affected males in this family show very characteristic abnormal behavior, in particular aggressive and sometimes violent behavior. Other types of impulsive behavior include arson, attempted rape, and exhibitionism. Attempted suicide has been reported in a single case. The locus for this disorder could be assigned to the Xp11-21 interval between DXS7 and DXS77 by linkage analysis using markers spanning the X chromosome. A maximal multipoint lod score of 3.69 was obtained at the monoam…

Associations of agression and use of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine in healthy and aggressive individuals.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are the three most commonly used psychoactive substances in the world. Given the known propensity of these substances to influence behavior, the relationship between these substances and aggressive and impulsive behaviors, in particular is of interest. METHODS: 1062 adult individuals participated in this study including those with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) and non-aggressive healthy (HC) and psychiatric (PC) controls. Data regarding current and life use of caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine were recorded as were responses on measures of agg…

Negative Emotions Will Be Welcomed: The Effect of Upward Comparison on Counterhedonic Consumption.

Upward comparisons are prevalent in life and have a significant influence on consumer psychology and subsequent behavior. Previous research examined the effects of upward comparisons on consumption behavior, mainly focusing on behavior that evokes positive emotions (e.g., donation behavior, sustainable consumption) or behavior that evokes negative emotions (e.g., impulsive consumption, compulsive consumption) and less on behavior that evokes both negative emotions and positive emotions (i.e., counterhedonic consumption). This research examined the effect of upward comparisons on counterhedonic

Efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation in reducing impulsivity in borderline personality disorder (TIMBER): study protocol of a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is closely related to suicide risk and destructive and aggressive behaviors. Although transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown its promising effects as an intervention to modulate impulsivity, no study has explored its potential regarding BPD. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a multicenter, crossover, double-blind study comparing active versus sham tDCS (2 mA, 30 min), applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for five consecutive days in 50 BPD patients. Participants will be assessed for impul

Exploring the pathophysiology of emotion-based impulsivity: The roles of the sympathetic nervous system and hostile reactivity.

The tendency to engage in impulsive behavior in the context of negative affect, known as negative urgency, has emerged as a powerful transdiagnostic predictor of behavioral dysregulation. Although general vulnerability to negative affect (neuroticism) correlates with negative urgency, not all neurotic individuals engage in urgent behavior. Given prior experimental evidence that sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation may promote emotion-related impulsivity, the present study examines tonic SNS activity as a moderator of the link between neuroticism and negative urgency. Participants (N = 1…

Pathological gambling. Identification and treatment.

1. Social gamblers view gambling as a form of entertainment or recreation and gamble with no harmful effects, while problem gamblers' behavior causes disruption or harm to themselves or others in major life areas. Pathological gamblers fail to resist the impulse to gamble, with the resulting loss of control in their gambling behavior. 2. Pathological gambling is a primary mental health disorder of impulse control. 3. Treatment for pathological gamblers should be individualized, and interventions should address both the gambling disorder and any comorbid disorders.

Gender issues in the management of multi-impulsive bulimia: a case-study.

We describe the management of multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa in a 27-year-old man. Inpatient treatment was attempted using a standardized focal-interpretative (psychodynamic) and cognitive-behavioral approach, with an emphasis on ward milieu. The value of this approach has been proved for female patients in the past. To our knowledge, this is the first report of its usage for a male with multi-impulsive bulimia, and the problems encountered highlight the impact of gender on behavioral symptoms, ward culture, and the predominantly female patient group.

Pharmacologic dissociation between impulsivity and alcohol drinking in high alcohol preferring mice.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is genetically correlated with, and precedes, addictive behaviors and alcoholism. If impulsivity or attention is causally related to addiction, certain pharmacological manipulations of impulsivity and/or attention may affect alcohol drinking, and vice versa. The current studies were designed to explore the relationship among impulsivity, drinking, and vigilance in selectively bred High Alcohol Preferring (HAP) mice, a line that has previously demonstrated both high impulsivity and high alcohol consumption. Amphetamine, naltrexone, and memantine were tested in a delay di

From the urge to see one's own blood to the urge to drink it: Can hemomania be specified as an impulse control disorder? Two case reports.

At least half of self-mutilative individuals report that seeing their own blood is comforting, while a quarter report that they have tasted it. Bloodletting and blood-drinking behaviors have been discussed in case reports of disorders such as borderline personality disorder, bulimia nervosa, dissociative identity disorder, and psychotic disorder. The role of blood-drinking behavior, however, needs to be clarified in the psychiatric literature. This paper is the first to discuss blood-drinking behavior as a possible impulse control disorder that progresses from a desire to see or taste one's ow

A case report of suicidal behavior related to subclinical hyperthyroidism.

Abnormalities in thyroid function are associated with many psychiatric symptoms. We present a report of a 15-year-old girl who was admitted to the psychiatry inpatient unit with symptoms of suicidal behavior, irritability, and impulsivity. One year previously, she had become more short-tempered, and had started to cut her wrists impulsively. Laboratory tests revealed subclinical hyperthyroidism. She was treated with anxiolytic and antithyroid drugs, and her suicidal ideation and irritability resolved. This case demonstrates that subclinical hyperthyroidism can be associated with suicidal behav

Misophonia severity in university students: associations with negative emotionality, motor impulsivity, and checking.

BACKGROUND: Misophonia is characterized by strong negative emotional and behavioral reactions to specific everyday sounds and is associated with significant functional impairment. Previous studies have primarily focused on associations between misophonia and negative affect (e.g., depression, anxiety, and stress), whereas less is known about how misophonia severity relates to impulsivity and specific obsessive–compulsive symptom dimensions in non-clinical populations. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Misophonia Questionnaire (MQ) cut-off–defined elevated misopho

[Suicidal behaviors in bipolar disorder type 1].

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder is one of the most common and severe psychiatric conditions. It is frequently complicated by suicidal behaviors, and patients with BD are among those at higher risk of suicide. The aims of our study were to evaluate the predictive factors of suicidal behaviors in patients with BD type 1, through the assessment of their socio-demographic, clinical and evolutionary characteristics as well as to study the implications of the childhood traumas and impulsivity as predictive factors for suicidal behaviors in these patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: One hundred pat

Hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania): genes, neurobiology, and a model for understanding impulsivity and compulsivity.

Hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania) affects at least 3.7 million people in the United States and results in marked functional impairment. This article reviews empirical research investigating the genetics and neurobiology of hair pulling disorder (HPD). We also discuss recent advances in the characterization of this phenotype which have led to evidence supporting the existence of at least two disparate pulling styles-automatic and focused pulling. These pulling styles exhibit facets of behavioral processes, impulsivity and compulsivity, characteristic of several classes of disorders (e.g.
