What Is the Relationship Between Incarceration of Children and Adult Health Outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the association between child incarceration in the United States and subsequent adult health outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data from 1727 adult (Wave IV) participants first incarcerated at age <25 years. Using chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression models, we compared adult health outcomes (ie, mobility limitations, depressive symptoms, and suicidal thoughts) among those first incarcerated at age ≤14 years, 15 to 17 years, and 18 to 20 years, with those first incarcerated at 21 to 24 yea…

Extended-release naltrexone for opioid use disorder started during or following incarceration.

UNLABELLED: A western Massachusetts county jail began initiating extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) prior to release from incarceration and linking participants to community treatment providers upon release. Program barriers prevented the start of XR-NTX prior to release for a subset. METHODS: This report consists of the initial 67 jail releasees with opioid dependence, 47 who received XR-NTX before release, and 20 after release. Utility of the program was assessed by determining medication addiction treatment (MAT) retention rates at 4, 8, and 24 weeks. RESULTS: Forty-seven commenced XR-N…

Condom use and incarceration among STI clinic attendees in the Deep South.

BACKGROUND: Incarceration history is associated with lower rates of condom use and increased HIV risk. Less is known about duration of incarceration and multiple incarcerations' impact on condom use post-release. METHODS: In the current study, we surveyed 1,416 adults in Mississippi about their incarceration history and sexual risk behaviors. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to test associations between duration of incarceration, multiple incarcerations, socio-demographic factors, substance use, sexual behavior, and event level condom use at last sex. RESULTS: After adjusting…

Elevated risk of incarceration among street-involved youth who initiate drug dealing.

BACKGROUND: Street-involved youth are known to be an economically vulnerable population that commonly resorts to risky activities such as drug dealing to generate income. While incarceration is common among people who use illicit drugs and associated with increased economic vulnerability, interventions among this population remain inadequate. Although previous research has documented the role of incarceration in further entrenching youth in both the criminal justice system and street life, less is known whether recent incarceration predicts initiating drug dealing among vulnerable youth. This …

Beyond Boys' Bad Behavior: Paternal Incarceration and Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood.

A growing number of American school-aged children have incarcerated or formally incarcerated parents necessitating a more comprehensive understanding of the intergenerational effects of mass imprisonment. Using the Fragile Families Study, I assess whether having an incarcerated father impacts children's cognitive skill development into middle childhood. While previous studies have primarily found effects for boys' behavior problems, matching models and sensitivity analyses demonstrate that experiencing paternal incarceration by age 9 is associated with lower cognitive skills for both boys and …

Lockdown Legacy: A Qualitative Investigation of Incarceration, Re-Integration, and Faith Communities.

Incarceration is often thought to be most relevant to the offender and the victim, yet the network of influence involves parents, children, significant others, and community members. Participants in this project viewed a pre-recorded play highlighting the ripple effects of incarceration, then engaged in a series of discussions sharing their own experiences and concerns. Content analysis of those discussions supported a variety of themes including a perceived lack of productive response from communities of faith. The themes are positioned in the framework of efficacy theory, demonstrating the e…

The Institutional Effects of Incarceration: Spillovers From Criminal Justice to Health Care.

POLICY POINTS: The steady increase in incarceration is related to the quality and functioning of the health care system. US states that incarcerate a larger number of people show declines in overall access to and quality of care, rooted in high levels of uninsurance and relatively poor health of former inmates. Providing health care to former inmates would ease the difficulties of inmates and their families. It might also prevent broader adverse spillovers to the health care system. The health care system and the criminal justice system are related in real but underappreciated ways. CONTEXT: …

Ethnographic assessment of an alternative to incarceration for women with minor children.

Allowing criminal justice-involved women to remain with their children in the community may decrease some of the negative intergenerational effects of incarceration. Little is known about potential program models to safely support community coresidence in this population. Ethnographic methods were used to explore the historical development of and life within a supportive housing alternative to incarceration (ATI) program for women with minor children and the health and social needs of resident families. Participants included 8 current and former adult tenants, 12 of their resident children, 3 …

Impact of incarceration in Nazi concentration camps on multimorbidity of former prisoners.

OBJECTIVE: To show the extent to which the health of former prisoners was affected by incarceration in extermination camps after 5 and 30 years of leaving the camp, and to determine the etiological factors underlying particular dysfunctions. METHODS: Medical records of former prisoners developed in 1950 (n=250) and 1975 (n=120) were then, after several decades, retrospectively analyzed and compared with the control group, randomized and matched according to age, sex, occupation, and environment. None of the subjects in the control group was a prisoner either at a concentration camp or at any …

Endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy with ostial stent intubation following nasolacrimal duct stent incarceration.

PURPOSE: To study the feasibility of endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR) with novel lacrimal ostial stent (LOS) intubation for patients with chronic dacryocystitis with incarceration of a previously implanted nasolacrimal duct stent (NDS). METHODS: According to surgical procedure, 166 patients (167 eyes) were divided into two groups: EE-DCR with LOS intubation was performed on 126 patients (127 eyes) in the EE-DCR group; while external dacryocystorhinostomy (E-DCR) with silicone tube intubation was performed on 40 patients (40 eyes) in the E-DCR group. The LOS or silicone tube…

Psychiatric correlates of past incarceration in the national co-morbidity study replication.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness and substance abuse have been increasingly linked to criminal justice system involvement, but this relationship has mostly been by survey of prison populations and inferences of excess rates of disorder made by noting how these rates compare with national population-based surveys of mental disorders. AIMS: The aim of this study is to examine associations between history of mental disorders, including substance misuse, with incarceration history within a single population-based data set. METHODS: Data were from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, a national…

A Sort of Homecoming: Incarceration and the housing security of urban men.

While individuals returning from prison face many barriers to successful re-entry, among the most serious are the challenges they face in se … rban families to examine housing insecurity among nearly 3,000 urban men, including over 1,000 with incarceration histories. We find that men recently incarcerated face greater housing insecurity, including both serious hardships such as homelessness, and precursors to homelessness such as residential turnover and relying on others for housing expenses. Incarceration and Perforation of a Sliding Hiatus Hernia: Report of a Case.

The potentially serious complications of paraoesophageal hiatus hernias are known but its counterpart the sliding hernia, is thought to be more benign in nature. We describe a 72 year old female admitted with epigastric pain after gorging on her Christmas meal, who proved a diagnostic difficulty for both the medical and surgical registrars and was found to have a perforated incarcerated sliding hiatus hernia on CT scan. A transhiatal oesophagectomy was performed as laparotomy findings confirmed a gangrenous perforated stomach and a gangrenous lower oesophagus. She recovered fully from the oper

Sliding inguinal hernia with incarceration of urinary bladder diverticulum in a child.

Although inguinal herniorrhaphy is generally safe, certain complications can occur even with an experienced pediatric surgeon. We present a case of sliding right inguinal hernia with incarceration of urinary bladder diverticulum in a 2-year-old boy. A small perforation at the anterior wall of the urinary bladder, peritonitis, and kinking of the sigmoid colon occurred after the herniorrhaphy. He received exploratory laparotomy for repairing the urinary bladder perforation hole and drainage of the ascites. An anal tube was inserted to keep the sigmoid colon patent. The patient recovered from thi…

Gender-specific correlates of incarceration among marginally housed individuals in San Francisco.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed how different patterns of housing instability affect incarceration and whether correlates of incarceration are gender specific. METHODS: We used multivariate logistic regression to assess associations between patterns of housing instability and recent jail stays among a reproducible sample of 1175 marginally housed adults in San Francisco, California. RESULTS: Over the previous year, 71% of men and 21% of women in the sample reported jail stays. Among women, long-term single-room occupancy hotel stays ( > 90 days) were protective for incarceration. Stays in the street…

Incisional hernia with bowel incarceration and obstruction at 34 weeks gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Hernias commonly coexist with pregnancy; however, an incarcerated hernia with bowel obstruction is rare at advanced gestation an … d betamethasone administration. The patient and infant did well postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Bowel incarceration through an incisional hernia can occur during pregnancy and result in favorable maternal and neonatal outcomes with simultaneous delivery and surgical repair.
