Human Botulism in France, 1875-2016.

Botulism is a rare but severe disease which is characterized by paralysis and inhibition of secretions. Only a few cases had been reported at the end of the 19th century in France. The disease was frequent during the second world war, and then the incidence decreased progressively. However, human botulism is still present in France with 10-25 cases every year. Food-borne botulism was the main form of botulism in France, whereas infant botulism (17 cases between 2004 and 2016) was rare, and wound and inhalational botulism were exceptional. Type B was the prevalent botulism type and was mainly d

Early-life colonization by aromatic-lactate-producing bifidobacteria lowers the risk of allergic sensitization.

Early-life microbial exposures shape immune development and allergy risk. Food allergen sensitization, reflected by the presence of food allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE), is an early indication of impaired immune tolerance. Here we show that early-life transmission of aromatic lactate-producing bifidobacteria strains in 147 children followed from birth to 5 years of age, facilitated by vaginal delivery, exposure to older siblings and exclusive breastfeeding for the first 2 months, led to increased levels of aromatic lactates in the infant gut. This microbiota-metabolite signature was i

What Children Eat in Developing Countries: Diet in the Etiology of Undernutrition?

We live in a world of paradoxes: one half of the world is overweight or obese with abundant access to food and the other half undernourished due to poor food access. It has been estimated that nearly 36% of children in Asia are stunted. Worldwide, approximately 1 in 4 children under the age of 5 years shows stunted growth, making the number of stunted children to 155 million; 52 million children under 5 years are wasted, of which 17 million are severely wasted. Given the wide-scale nature of global malnutrition and its long-term consequences, why has this scar in our consciousness not being ad

Microbiology and foodborne pathogens in honey.

Honey has been considered a relatively safe foodstuff due to its compositional properties, with infant botulism caused by Clostridium botulinum being the most prominent health risk associated with it. Our review is focused on the honey microflora along the food chain and evaluates the pathogenic potential of those microorganisms found in honey. This product may contain a great variety of bacteria and, particularly, fungi that eventually entered the food chain at an early stage (e.g., via pollen). For many of these microorganisms, opportunistic infections in humans have been recorded (e.g., inf

[Characteristics of maternal and child nutrition in relation to infant mortality in Kazakh SSR].

Studies of actual nutrition patterns of women in pregnancy and lactation living in Kazakhstan regions with highest infant mortality rates showed significant deficiency of animal proteins, essential amino acids, and vitamins A, E and C. The prevalence of anemias amounted to 40-90% and that of hypogalactia to 32%. At the same time, the breast milk was found to have reduced protein and fat content at its high carbophos contamination. From 70 to 90% of cow milk samples were found to be contaminated with carbophos. Food products for children showed high levels of contamination with aflatoxin produc

Maternal Aflatoxin Exposure, Birth Outcomes, and Infant Growth in Uganda.

The association between maternal aflatoxin exposure and infant anthropometric birth and growth outcomes was investigated in the present study, controlling for possible confounders. Pregnant women (N = 1,210) from 16 Ugandan subcounties were enrolled in a birth cohort study to track birth outcomes and subsequent growth of infants. Serum concentrations of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-lysine adduct, environmental enteric dysfunction markers of anti-lipopolysaccharide and anti-flagellin IgG and IgA, and markers of systemic inflammation, alpha-1 acid glycoprotein, and C-reactive protein were measured in mot

Differentiation of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome misleading to necrotizing enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a rare non-immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergy with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)-like symptoms which requires differential diagnosis as treatments differ. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings that differentiate FPIES from NEC in preterm and term infants. METHODS: Clinical features, comorbidities, and laboratory and radiologic findings of neonates with presumed NEC were reviewed retrospectively and compared between FPIES and NEC in preterm and term infants who were admitted to the neon

The hazards of honey: infantile botulism.

Infantile botulism is a rare cause of neuromuscular weakness resulting from ingestion of Clostridium botulinum-an anaerobic Gram-positive bacillus found universally in soil. The only definite food source known to cause infantile botulism is honey; previously, links to formula milk have been postulated but not definitely sourced. We present an interesting case report of a 2-month-old infant with this rare condition, including the diagnostic difficulties that ensued. A brief overview of the condition follows. This is the first case in the UK in which C botulinum was successfully isolated from bo

Associations among eating behaviors, food security status, and dietary intake during pregnancy.

Dietary intake of certain food groups and/or nutrients during pregnancy has been associated with maternal and infant pregnancy-related outcomes. Few studies have examined how behavioral and environmental factors interact to influence prenatal diet. We examined associations between eating behaviors (dietary restraint, emotional eating, external eating) and food security status regarding dietary intake of selected nutrients/food groups during pregnancy. Participants (N = 299; 29% Non-Hispanic Black; 16% ≤ high school education; 21% food insecure) completed validated questionnaires to assess esti

The Use of Trace and Essential Elements in Common Clinical Disorders: Roles in Assessment of Health and Oxidative Stress Status.

During the early life, the diet of infants is mainly dominated by milk. Milk is a natural food rich in trace elements focus on essential elements. These elements are very necessary for human metabolism and since they cannot be synthesized by the body, the only source available for the humans to obtain them is by ingestion of natural food. This mini-review aims at updating the knowledge on trace elements, outlining their natural food sources, and their possible implications in common clinical disorders in early and adult life. However, it was found that consumption of food with micronutrients a

Primary Prevention of Cow's Milk Sensitization and Food Allergy by Avoiding Supplementation With Cow's Milk Formula at Birth: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Cow's milk formula (CMF) is used to supplement breastfeeding (BF) at birth without clear clinical evidence to support the practice. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether avoiding supplementation with CMF at birth can decrease risks of sensitization to cow's milk protein and/or clinical food allergy, including cow's milk allergy (CMA), overall and in subgroups stratified by 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Atopy Induced by Breastfeeding or Cow's Milk Formula (ABC) trial, a randomized, nonblinded clinical trial, began enrollment October 1, 2013

Infantile colic and small intestinal function: a nutritional problem?

Approximately 25% of infants with moderate or severe colic (crying > 3 h d(-1)) have a cow's milk-dependent colic. The author recommends a strict cow's milk-free diet for the mother (with an extra supplement of calcium) in breastfed infants and a casein-hydrolysate formula for formula-fed infants. With this dietary regimen, there will be no nutritional problems. Later in infancy a relatively high proportion of the infants will continue to show an adverse reaction to cow's milk and will also develop allergies to other foods. Several signs (e.g. increased macromolecular absorption, increased mot

Infantile Frey's syndrome.

Frey's syndrome in children is rare and often erroneously attributed to food allergy. Here we describe a case of Frey's syndrome in an infant and provide a review of the literature. Awareness of this condition is important for the Otolaryngologist in order to avoid unnecessary medical costs and procedures and provide reassurance to both parents and primary care providers in the setting of this benign condition.

Role of breast-feeding in managing malnutrition and infectious disease.

Breast-feeding policy tends to be an emotive issue. International agencies recommend exclusive breast-feeding for 4-6 months followed by continued partial breast-feeding into the second year of life in order to promote infant and child health and minimize the damage caused by the malnutrition-infection cycle. To what extent are these recommendations supported by the experimental evidence? Are they a simplification for emotional reasons or public health purposes? Breast-feeding is believed to benefit infants because breast milk contains the ideal mix of nutrients for infants, because it contain

Chevalier Jackson Lecture. Esophageal stenosis in children.

Congenital anomalies that can produce esophageal stenosis as well as acquired diseases of the esophagus in children are described. The infant and child who refuse to accept solid foods must be submitted to roentgenologic and endoscopic examination. Dysphagia is sometimes difficult to recognize in infants and children. Endoscopic treatment alone or associated with surgery is successful in many cases if well indicated and precisely done.

Ethical issues in infant feeding after disasters.

In the aftermath of many disasters the silence is punctuated by the crying of infants, hungry infants. The aim of this paper is to discuss ethical issues in feeding infants after disasters. The Asia Pacific region generates 25% of the world's GDP, but experiences 45% of natural disasters and 42% of the economic losses due to disasters. The region has 61% of the world's population, but 86% of the population affected by disasters. Breastfeeding, exclusive to six months and continuing thereafter, is important for growth and the health of the infant in the short term and later in life. In most nat
