[Rare tumours--are they really rare in the Polish children population?].

Clear statement that pediatric neoplasms are really rare is not easy. Thus the incidence of rare tumours in children has not been defined so far. The paper efforts to assess the topic of rare tumours of childhood in the Polish population. Following two categories are proposed: tumours typical for adults, but possible in children (neoplasms of epithelial origin--mainly carcinomas, melanomas, carcinoids) and paediatric tumours consisting less than 10% of cases in corresponding clinical groups according to the ICCC classification. Data on 317 patients aged 0-18 years treated in centres associated

Does an increase of low income families affect child health inequalities? A Swedish case study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Reduction of health inequalities is a primary public health target in many countries. A change of proportion of low income families might affect child health inequalities. Yet, the importance of family incomes in high income welfare states is not well established. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of increased percentage of low income families on child health inequalities during an economic recession in Sweden, 1991-1996. DESIGN: Health inequalities for six health indicators were assessed during the period 1991-1996 and during adjacent periods. Relative ineq

Kernicterus: an international perspective.

Kernicterus occurs in all parts of the world. The risk is increased in countries where glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficiency is common. In the 1990's more case reports of infants who developed kernicterus were published than in the previous decades. A combination of reduced concern for jaundice in newborns, early discharge with inadequate follow-up and a decreased awareness of the signs that may herald serious toxicity may have contributed to the apparent increase in the incidence of kernicterus. Although most jaundiced newborns do not need aggressive evaluation or treatment, physicians

Evolution of a universal infant hearing screening program in an inner city hospital.

This study reports the evolution of a newborn hearing screening program which began in 1988. Data are reported from the period of time that universal newborn hearing screening was initiated, i.e. April 1996 to December 2000 (total screened=7128 babies). From 1996 to the present, the program has developed to the current form. During 2000, 1713 infants in the well-baby nursery and neonatal intensive care unit were screened at a cost of 18.44 dollars per child. Thirty (1.7%) infants failed the screen, of which 26 (86%) returned for follow-up testing. Fifteen infants were documented with hearing l

Pediatric liver imaging.

The evaluation of hepatic diseases in children is often a multimodality process, requiring multiple imaging tests to determine the cause and extent of an abnormality. Ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have distinct roles to play in the evaluation of hepatic disease in children. This article addresses the hepatic and biliary lesions that are unique or more common in children and describes their cross-sectional imaging characteristics. In addition, the techniques and protocols for US, CT, and MRI are reviewed.

Mother's age, birth order and health status in a British national sample.

Using data from a longitudinal study of a national sample of British children, it is shown that mother's age and experience with child rearing are related to the attention paid to the child's health. Younger mothers, whose children are usually the first born, tend to be more concerned with health care facility use than are older mothers of children born subsequently. Younger mothers more often take their child to infant and toddler clinics, and are more likely to have their child immunized against the most threatening of childhood diseases. It is also the younger mothers who more often seek me

Assessing fetal growth impairments based on family data as a tool for identifying high-risk babies. An example with neonatal mortality.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight is associated with an increased risk of neonatal and infant mortality and morbidity, as well as with other adverse conditions later in life. Since the birth weight-specific mortality of a second child depends on the birth weight of an older sibling, a failure to achieve the biologically intended size appears to increase the risk of adverse outcome even in babies who are not classified as small for gestation. In this study, we aimed at quantifying the risk of neonatal death as a function of a baby's failure to fulfil its biologic growth potential across the whole di

Malassezia furfur in infantile seborrheic dermatitis.

Our objective was to study both incidence and various strains of Malassezia in infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD). Sixty infants between 2 weeks and 2 years old with clinical diagnosis of ISD at the Department of Pediatrics, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from May 2002 to April 2003 were recruited. Malassezia spp. were isolated from cultured skin samples of the patients, genomic DNA was extracted and the ITS1 rDNA region was amplified. The PCR product was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and DNA sequences were determined. The ITS1 sequences were also subjected to phylogenetic a

Cleft of the mitral valve in patients with Down's syndrome.

Differentiation between a cleft of the mitral valve and the cleft of the left side of an atrioventricular septal defect--a lesion commonly found in patients with Down's syndrome--is surgically important since the distribution of the conduction tissue varies between the 2 lesions. We sought to determine if cleft of the mitral valve occurs also in patients with Down's syndrome. We studied 5 patients with Down's syndrome and cleft of the mitral valve followed in our institution. Echocardiography showed in all 5 patients a cleft dividing the anterior (aortic) leaflet of mitral valve with normal pa

Situational analysis of infant and young child nutrition policies and programmatic activities in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Progress towards reducing mortality and malnutrition among children <5 years of age has been less than needed to achieve related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), so several international agencies joined to 'reposition children's right to adequate nutrition in the Sahel', starting with an analysis of current activities related to infant and young child nutrition (IYCN). The main objectives of the situational analysis are to compile, analyse, and interpret available information on infant and child feeding, and the nutrition and health situation of children <2 years of age in Mauritania as on

Medical neglect in Canada: a cross-sectional study exploring drivers of substantiation using a national dataset.

BACKGROUND: This study explores child welfare investigations for medical neglect in Canada, focusing on household, family and child characteristics and drivers of substantiated victimisation. METHODS: Data from the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect 2019 (CIS-2019), the most recent source of Canadian data on child maltreatment-related investigations, were used. A multistaged sampling design was used in the CIS-2019 to select a representative sample of child welfare agencies, and data were collected from investigating child welfare workers at selected agencies over a

Advancing the newborn and stillbirth global agenda: priorities for the next decade.

Remarkable advances have been made over the past decade in defining the burden of newborn mortality and morbidity and stillbirths, and in identifying interventions to address the major risk factors and causes of deaths. However, progress in saving newborn lives and preventing stillbirths in countries lags behind that for maternal mortality and for children aged 1-59 months. To accelerate progress, greater focus is needed on improving coverage, quality and equity of care at birth-particularly obstetric care during labour and childbirth, and care for small and sick newborns, which gives a triple

Environmental exposure and children's health in China.

Concerns regarding adverse health effects of exposure to environmental pollutants among children are increasing. This subject area is particularly important in China because of environmental pollution problems associated with rapid development and a large population. The authors provide what is, to their knowledge, the first review in China of English- and Chinese-language literature regarding the current status of environmental exposures to children in China and the impact of these exposures on the health of children. Children in China are exposed to diverse environmental pollutants, includin

Countdown to 2015: tracking donor assistance to maternal, newborn, and child health.

BACKGROUND: Timely reliable data on aid flows to maternal, newborn, and child health are essential for assessing the adequacy of current levels of funding, and to promote accountability among donors for attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for child and maternal health. We provide global estimates of official development assistance (ODA) to maternal, newborn, and child health in 2003 and 2004, drawing on data reported by high-income donor countries and aid agencies to the Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation. METHODS: ODA was tracked on a project-by-project b
