Hepatitis B virus infection and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in Korea: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: There is a wide variation in risk factors for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) among various populations. Several studies have suggested that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may play a role in the development of ICC, whereas the role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is less clear. METHODS: To determine whether HBV or HCV infection is a risk factor of ICC, we compared baseline demographic and clinical factors in 622 patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2004 with histologically confirmed ICC and 2,488 healthy controls, matched 4:1 with ICC patients for sex and year of birt

HIV infection in refugees: a case-control analysis of refugees in Rhode Island.

OBJECTIVES: The number of HIV-infected refugees entering the USA is increasing. There is little data describing the HIV-infected refugee population and the challenges encountered when caring for them. We performed a retrospective case-control analysis of HIV-infected refugees in order to characterize their co-morbidities, baseline HIV characteristics, and longitudinal care compared to HIV-infected non-refugees. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of HIV-infected refugees and non-refugees who were matched for gender, age, and time of establishment of initial HIV care. RESULTS:

Human papillomavirus infection and oral cancer: a case-control study in Montreal, Canada.

The objective of the present study was to examine the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of developing oral cancer. The investigation followed a hospital-based case-control design. Cases consisted of newly diagnosed patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. Controls were frequency matched to cases on gender, age, and hospital. Subjects were interviewed to elicit information on putative risk factors. Oral exfoliated cells were tested for detection of HPV DNA by the PGMY09/11 polymerase chain reaction protocol. Serum antibodies agains

Infection and the risk of spontaneous cervical artery dissection: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several constitutional and environmental risk factors may be involved in the occurrence of spontaneous cervical artery dissection (SCAD). This work explored the association between recent infection and SCAD in an hospital-based case-control study. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with SCAD and 52 with ischemic stroke from another cause were prospectively and consecutively recruited by 2 neurology departments. A specially designed questionnaire was used to assess the history of an acute infection that could have occurred within a month before the vascular event. RESULTS:

Infection-related perinatal brain injury: the pathogenic role of impaired fetal cardiovascular control.

There is a growing body of evidence from clinical and epidemiologic studies that in utero exposure to infection plays an important role in the genesis of fetal or neonatal injury leading to cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease. Thus, after chorioamnionitis the incidence of immature neonates with periventricular white matter damage and periventricular or intraventricular hemorrhage is significantly elevated. Recent clinical and experimental data support the hypothesis that a fetal inflammatory response links antenatal infection with brain white matter damage and subsequent motor handicap. A

Community control studies on Strongyloides infection in a model island of Okinawa, Japan.

The community control program for Strongyloides infection was conducted by fecal examination and subsequent treatment of the population on a model island (Kume Island) in Okinawa, Japan, for 5 years from 1993 to 1997. More than 1,200 persons, accounting for 17% to 20% of the persons subjected, received fecal examinations each year. The positive rate in 1993 was found to be 9.7% (133/1,374). The positive rate decreased to 6.5% (95/1,468) in 1994, then 4.8% (60/1,245) in 1995, 2.2% (27/1,225) in 1996 and 2.7% (33/1,217) in 1997 through treatment with albendazole or ivermectin on the positive per

CD8+ T cells control Th2-driven pathology during pulmonary respiratory syncytial virus infection.

BALB/c mice vaccinated with vaccinia virus expressing the major surface glycoprotein G of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) develop lung eosinophilia during RSV challenge. The G protein is remarkable in that it induces CD4+, but no CD8+ T cells in this mouse strain. Studies using passive T cell transfers show that co-injection of CD8+ T cells greatly reduces the Th2-driven lung eosinophilia caused by G-specific CD4+ T cells. By contrast, vaccination with the fusion protein (F) induces both CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, but not lung eosinophilia during RSV infection. These observations suggest that CD

Epidemiology and control of hepatitis B infection: a perspective from the Philippines, Asia.

The prevalence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the Philippines, as indicated by hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity, ranges from 2% to 16.5%, with an average of 12% in a study of rural villagers. Although mother to child transmission is a major route of HBV infection, other routes (particularly child to child transmission) play an important part after the first year of life. In a study assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating hepatitis B vaccine into the national Expanded Programme on Immunisation, the coverage rate for fully immunised 1 year olds

Control of Ascaris infection by chemotherapy: which is the most cost-effective option?

Cost-effectiveness analysis is used to predict the optimal design of mass chemotherapy strategies in controlling Ascaris lumbricoides infection. The question of who to treat, how many to treat, and how often to treat are addressed using a population dynamic model of helminth transmission that assesses effectiveness in terms of disease reduction, combined with cost data from an actual control programme. Child-targeted treatment can be more cost-effective than population treatment in reducing the number of disease cases. The model also implies that, in the circumstances described here, enhancing

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in very low birth weight infants: a case-control study.

The perinatal histories and hospital courses of all neonates born at Grady Memorial Hospital who developed Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis or meningitis in the 5-year period 1989-1993 were reviewed. In addition a case-control study was performed to evaluate selected risk factors for this infection. Twenty-one patients had one or more blood cultures positive for P. aeruginosa. An additional patient had P. aeruginosa meningitis without bacteremia. All infections occurred after 5 days of age. The overall incidence of P. aeruginosa infection was 0.7/1000 live births. All cases occurred in infants <

[Anti-bacterial zeolite balloon catheter and its potential for urinary tract infection control].

We present here a production of anti-bacterial zeolite balloon catheter and investigated its potential for controlling urinary tract infection. This anti-bacterial balloon catheter showed a bactericidal effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro studies. The antibacterial effects were correlated with the concentration of anti-bacterial zeolite and size of catheter. We tried this catheter for 11 various urological patients who needed a long-term indwelling of a balloon catheter for lower urinary tract obstruction and neurogenic bladder. All patien

Control of infection and techniques of isolation in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The control of nosocomial infection in a pediatric intensive care unit is important not only because of the serious nature of the patient's condition, but also because of the greater staff-patient contact and inevitable crowding of patients, staff, and equipment. In order to control the spread of nosocomial infection, the modes of transmission and the principles of infection control must be understood. Each patient with an infectious disease must be considered to be a potential source of nosocomial disease, and measures of infection control must be individualized for the infectious disease and…

Evaluating the risk of Clostridioides difficile infection from toilet flushing: a quantitative microbial risk assessment and implications for infection control.

BACKGROUND: Despite stringent infection control measures, Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) remains a challenge in healthcare settings, partly due to overlooked transmission vectors such as toilet plume bioaerosols. AIM: To systematically quantify the risks associated with CDI transmission via toilet flushing and provide critical insights to inform CDI preventive strategies. METHODS: Impaction sampling was used to quantify airborne C. difficile post-flush and high-contact surfaces were swabbed to assess contamination levels, in a controlled toilet environment. A quantitative microbial…
