Managerial leadership for research use in nursing and allied health care professions: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Leadership by point-of-care and senior managers is increasingly recognized as critical to the acceptance and use of research evidence in practice. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify the leadership behaviours of managers that are associated with research use by clinical staff in nursing and allied health professionals. METHODS: A mixed methods systematic review was performed. Eight electronic bibliographic databases were searched. Studies examining the association between leadership behaviours and nurses and allied health professionals' use of research were eligi

Using Self-Reported Patient Experiences to Understand Patient Burden: Learnings from Digital Patient Communities in Ankylosing Spondylitis.

INTRODUCTION: Online communities contain a wealth of information containing unsolicited patient experiences that may go beyond what is captured by guided surveys or patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments used in clinical settings. This study described patient experiences reported online to better understand the day-to-day disease burden of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: Unguided, English-language patient narratives reported between January 2010 and May 2016 were collected from 52 online sources (e.g., general/health social networking sites, patient-physician Q&A sites, AS forums).

Bibliometric analysis of scientific literature on intestinal parasites in Argentina during the period 1985-2014.

The study of scientific production is a good indicator of the progress in research and knowledge generation. Bibliometrics is a scientific discipline that uses a set of indicators to quantitatively express the bibliographic characteristics of scientific publications. The scientific literature on the epidemiology of intestinal parasites in Argentina is scattered in numerous sources, hindering access and visibility to the scientific community. Our purpose was to perform a quantitative, bibliometric study of the scientific literature on intestinal parasites in humans in Argentina published in the

Dissemination of well water arsenic results to homeowners in Central Maine: influences on mitigation behavior and continued risks for exposure.

Private wells in the United States are unregulated for drinking water standards and are the homeowner's responsibility to test and treat. Testing for water quality parameters such as arsenic (As) is a crucial first step for homeowners to take protective actions. This study seeks to identify key behavioral factors influencing homeowners' decisions to take action after receiving well As test results. A January 2013 survey of central Maine households (n=386, 73% response) who were notified 3-7 years earlier that their well water contained As above 10 μg/L found that 43% of households report insta

Final program evaluation methods and results of a National Lymphedema Management Program in Togo, West Africa.

In order to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) as a public health problem, the World Health Assembly recommends an approach which includes interruption of transmission of infection and the alleviation of morbidity. In 2000, the Togolese National Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (PNELF) started the annual mass drug administrations and in 2007, the program added a morbidity component for the management of lymphedema. This manuscript describes the methods of an evaluation aimed at assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the Togolese National Lymphedema Morbidity Program. The evaluatio

Knowledge translation at the macro level: legal and ethical considerations.

Macro-level legal and ethical issues play a significant role in the successful translation of knowledge into practice. The medicolegal milieu, in particular, can promote clinical inertia and stifle innovation. Embracing new clinical practice guidelines and best practice models has not protected physicians from superfluous torts; in some cases, emerging evidence has been used as the dagger of trial lawyers rather than the scalpel of physicians. Beyond the legal challenges are overarching justice issues that frame the broad goals of knowledge translation (KT) and technology diffusion. Optimal im

The Intersection of Dissemination Research and Acupuncture: Applications for Chronic Low Back Pain.

Dissemination research is the study of distributing information and intervention materials to a specific clinical practice or public health audience. Acupuncture, a healthcare practice involving the stimulation of certain body points, often with thin needles, is considered an evidence-based treatment for low back pain (LBP), but is underutilized in the United States. Body: We will use the example of acupuncture for LBP to identify opportunities to leverage dissemination research to increase utilization of acupuncture. Deficits in the awareness or knowledge of acupuncture may limit its adoption

Searching the Internet for drug-related web sites: analysis of online available information on ecstasy (MDMA).

Although the Internet is a growing source of information on MDMA/ecstasy, no studies so far have investigated the level and quality of ecstasy information available to the typical Web user. In the present study, 280 Web sites were identified and analyzed; 50.4% had an anti-drug approach, 16.2% a harm reduction approach, and 24.8% a pro-drug approach. MDMA pro-drug Web sites appeared significantly earlier in the search engines' results list than both anti-drug and harm reduction Web sites (F (3; 159) = 3.288; p = .022). This study represents the first systematic analysis of information availabl

Health Services Professionals Endorse Omitting Some Research Information Under Limited Circumstances: Survey.

In an era of polarization, misinformation, and declining public trust in experts, effective public communication about health research is essential for disseminating evidence and maintaining the credibility of the research enterprise. Yet when communicating research findings to general audiences, experts face dilemmas about whether to omit information to avoid public confusion, to prevent the stigmatization of marginalized constituencies, or to keep information from being weaponized against vulnerable groups. Drawing on a national survey of health services professionals conducted in April and

Development of a scale to measure nurses' information sharing practices during care transitions for older adults with high healthcare needs: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Care transitions refer to the movement of patients between healthcare providers and/or care settings, such as from hospital to home. Continuous interventions, responses to unexpected changes during care transitions, and discharge support programs have been implemented to improve care transitions. However, a scale to measure information-sharing practices that address uncertainty in care transitions and differences in stakeholder perspectives has yet to be developed. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of an instrument to assess informatio
