DESIGN: Case Report Case description: This report describes the case of a female patient diagnosed with oculo-cerebral toxocariasis manifesting initially in the form of isolated bilateral cystoid macular edema. Diagnosis was made by means of positive anterior chamber and lumbar puncture western blots. The unusual presentation, ancillary findings and treatment are discussed. The control of intraocular inflammation that was only partially responsive to steroids was eventually achieved with pegylated interferon alfa-2a.

Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is a chronic progressive disease of predominantly middle-aged men. Alpha interferon has been shown to induce significant responses in HCL patients. With interferon treatment the platelet count normalizes first, followed by the haemoglobin and neutrophil counts. The number of hairy cells in the bone marrow decreases and granulocytic, erythroid and megakaryocytic cells increase. AIM: To study proportions of hormones, cytokines and macroglobulins in autoimmune thyroid diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants of the study were 28 females aged 43 +/- 5 years with diffuse toxic goiter (DTG), 31 females aged 41 +/- 6 years with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and 26 controls (n = 26) free of thyroid pathology aged 40 +/- 4 years. Interferons are not curative in hairy cell leukemia (HCL), and retreatment is necessary in most patients whose therapy is stopped. In an attempt to maintain or improve responses, we administered recombinant interferon-alpha 2a (rIFN-alpha 2a) continuously to patients with HCL who initially responded to this therapy.
