STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of alpha-interferon therapy in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related glomerulonephritis.
DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized study.
PATIENTS: Five patients with persistence of hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and HBV DNA in serum for at least 6 months and histologic changes of chronic hepatitis on liver biopsy as well as persistent proteinuria of greater than 2 g/d and histologic changes of glomerulonephritis on renal biopsy.

A clone of Daudi cells (Daudi-S) synthesizes the heavy chain of IgM (mu-chain) under routine conditions of cell culture. Up till now no standard therapy for Behçet syndrome has existed. Long-term corticoid therapy is often necessary, although side-effects cannot be avoided. Recent investigations have shown a correlation between high endogenous gamma-interferon serum levels and low activity of the syndrome. Partially purified interferon alpha (IFN alpha) was administered to 50 patients with metastatic renal-cell carcinoma (RCC) studied for more than two years. Lung toxicity related to interferon (IFN) alpha typically takes a form of interstitial pneumonitis, granulomatous inflammation, or organizing pneumonia. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman, who developed pneumonitis with exudative, lymphocytic-predominant pleural effusion following treatment with pegylated IFN alpha and ribavirin for hepatitis C. Her symptoms and lung findings resolved over 3 months of observation without corticosteroid therapy.
