Game avatar to keyboard warriors: The relationship between online disinhibition, internet gaming disorder and cyberbullying.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and cyberbullying are two significant issues that stem from online disinhibition, yet the relationship between them remains unclear. This study examined the roles of online disinhibition, IGD, and avatar identification in the context of cyberbullying. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 492 participants aged 18 to 30 years. The Chinese versions of the Online Disinhibition Scale, IGD-20 Scale, Avatar Identification Scale, and the cyberbullying section of the Revised Cyberbullying Inventory were used to examine correlations, mediation effects, and moderation

The association between family environment and problematic internet use in adolescents: The mediating role of self-control and psychological capital, and the moderating role of gender.

Over the past decade, problematic Internet use (PIU) has emerged as a major global health concern, particularly among adolescents. This study examined the influence of the family environment on PIU, focusing on the mediating roles of self-control and psychological capital (PsyCap), and the moderating role of gender. A sample of 559 first-year high school students in Shiraz (287 boys, 272 girls) was selected through multistage cluster sampling during the 2022-2023 academic year. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicated that a supportive fa

Problematic internet use and aggression in Chinese middle school students: mediation effect of reality social connectedness.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic internet use (PIU) has become a prevalent concern worldwide and is associated with increased aggression. However, the underlying effect of PIU on aggression remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential influence of reality social connectedness (RSC) on the relationship between PIU and aggression. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from a large survey conducted among middle school students in four provinces of China between September 2022 and March 2023. PIU, RSC, and aggression were assessed using Young's 20-item Internet Addiction Test (I

Research protocol for BootStRaP assessment phase: A nine-nation study on boosting societal adaptation and mental health in a rapidly digitalising, post-pandemic Europe.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing global concern about the harms associated with problematic usage of the internet (PUI) affecting young people. Various risk factors have been proposed, but there is a scarcity of reliable evidence on the extent of the problem, who is most at risk of developing PUI and why, and how best to tackle it. OBJECTIVES: BootStRaP (ISRCTN59576080) is a five-year multinational research programme designed to boost young people's health and resilience by determining, through prospective longitudinal assessment, the risk factors associated with PUI and its health economic im

Network Analysis of Internet Addiction, Online Social Anxiety, Fear of Missing Out, and Interpersonal Sensitivity among Chinese University Students.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing prevalence of internet usage among young people, the relationships between internet addiction, online social anxiety, fear of missing out (FoMO), and interpersonal sensitivity remain uncertain, intricate, and multifaceted. To gain insight into the underlying psychological mechanisms, we employed network analysis to explore the interconnections between them. This endeavor may provide fresh opportunities for intervention and treatment. METHODS: In this study, 470 participants were assessed at age from 18 to 22 (M = 20.18 years, SD = 1.861) years. Network analysis

From social media to body image distress: Problematic internet use, exercise addiction, and enhancement drugs use across countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media increasingly shapes body image by promoting often unattainable beauty ideals. Concurrently, targeted online marketing of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) exploits these vulnerabilities, intensifying anxiety and fostering maladaptive behaviours such as problematic usage of the internet (PUI), compulsive exercise, and IPEDs consumption. This study explores these behaviours across nine countries and examines how PUI, excessive exercise, and IPEDs use predict appearance anxiety, aiming to inform targeted prevention strategies for at-risk populations.

Problematic Internet Use Predicts Lesser Satisfaction with Life, but Psychological Distress Acts as a Mediator.

Problematic internet use (PIU) has emerged, from the extensive use of the internet, as a concept to describe and understand the more adverse influences of digitalization on people's experiences. PIU refers to compulsive or excessive internet use leading to psychosocial impairments (among others, anxiety, depression, lesser well-being), and it has been studied from diverse perspectives. However, the mechanisms through which PIU could exert its impact on broader satisfaction with life (SWL) remain unclear. The present work postulates that psychological distress acts as a mediator between PIU and

Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial to Enhance Executive Function via Brief Mindfulness Training in Individuals with Internet Gaming Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is characterized by uncontrolled gaming behavior, leading to emotional distress, neglect of academic or life responsibilities, and damage to interpersonal relationships, all of which have serious negative impacts on individuals and society. IGD has been associated with neuropsychological impairments, especially executive function deficits, and emotional difficulties. Mindfulness interventions have been indicated to improve executive functions to varying degrees in individuals with IGD. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the three subc

Social media addiction in five major mental disorders: a cross-sectional comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Social media addiction (SMA) is an increasingly prevalent and significant public health concern. While the relationship between SMA and mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, is well established in the general population, the prevalence, severity, and associations of SMA with mental health symptoms among individuals with mental disorders have not been sufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of SMA, as well as its associations with anxiety and depression symptoms, in diagnostic groups including anxiety disorders (AD), depr

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma, Pathological Dissociation, and Behavioral Addictions in Young Adults: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Study.

Interactions between childhood trauma (CT) and dissociation can contribute to psychiatric disturbances. We explored this phenomenon in relation to behavioral addictions (BAs) in a sample (n = 633) of young adults (age: 18-34 years). Self-report measures investigating CT, dissociation, and symptoms related to gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, problematic social media use, exercise dependence and compulsive buying were used. Scales related to BAs were summarized into a single measure ("Total Behavioral Addiction Index" - TBAI) for inferential analyses. A model analyzing the direct and

Just one more level: Identifying and addressing internet gaming disorder within primary care.

BACKGROUND: For most people, playing video games is a passionate leisure pursuit: a source of relaxation, fun, socialisation and culture. Moderate play has been associated with greater wellbeing and cognitive abilities in some studies. Yet, for a small subgroup, gaming can become excessive and problematic. OBJECTIVE: This article presents an overview of the world of video games and the recently proposed internet gaming disorder (IGD), as well as advice regarding relevant treatment approaches within primary care. DISCUSSION: Similar to other addictive disorders (including problem gambling), I

Problematic Online Gaming and Gambling Among First-Year University Students: Identification of Profiles and Psychological Vulnerabilities.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic engagement in online gaming and gambling has been linked to a range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral risk factors, yet the mechanisms underlying the severity of these behaviors remain underexplored within high-risk populations such as first-year university students. This study aimed to identify variables associated with internet gaming disorder (IGD) and online gambling disorder (OGD), and to examine potential mediating mechanisms influencing the severity of these addictive behaviors through path analysis. METHODS: A total of 273 first-year undergraduat

A 2-wave study on the associations between dissociative experiences, maladaptive daydreaming, bodily dissociation, and problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have reported an association between dissociative experiences (e.g., absorption, depersonalization) and Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), but the directionality of these relationships remains unclear. Moreover, there is a dearth of research on the link between bodily dissociation and PSMU, despite the widespread practice of editing and manipulating pictures of oneself, which requires users to view themselves from a third-person perspective. The present study aimed to examine the directionality of the relationship between various dissociative-related exp

Depression and social media addiction among teenagers in a longitudinal study with dual moderation.

Depression has been consistently associated with social media addiction, yet the psychological processes underlying this relationship remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between depression and social media addiction among teenagers, with particular attention to the potential moderating roles of difficulty describing feelings and experiential avoidance. A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 3,184 teenagers from China. Participants completed self-report measures assessing depression, social media addiction, difficulty des

Heavy spenders in digital games: expenditure disparities and associations between microtransactions, gaming disorder and gambling disorder among adolescents.

Free-to-play games have transformed the economics of digital play, shifting revenue from upfront sales to continuous microtransactions. Research on the free-to-play model has largely focused on specific mechanics such as loot boxes or pay-to-win systems. However, little is known about how adolescents' spending behaviour relates to problematic engagement. Drawing on survey data from 2,308 Austrian students aged 10-19 years (48.8% male; M = 14.3 years, SD = 2.1), the present study examined the distribution of in-game expenditure and its association with gaming disorder, gambling disorder, and so
