To define better the natural history of bacteriuria in females, we followed 60 schoolgirls with bacteriuria and 38 matched controls for periods ranging from nine to 18 years. Among the schoolgirls with bacteriuria (greater than or equal to 10(5) organisms per milliliter in two or more consecutive cultures), reflux was repaired in five, nephrectomy was performed in two, and reduced inulin clearance was noted in one subject with atrophic pyelonephritis. AIMS: To determine the extent of renal processing of glucose in sick and well neonates.
METHODS: Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the renal processing of glucose, sodium, and water were measured using prolonged inulin infusion in 47 infants of 26-40 weeks of gestation, aged 1-13 days.

BACKGROUND: Since renal transplantation is known to be the best choice for the growing child with end-stage renal failure, we prospectively evaluated early and late graft function in transplanted children.
POPULATION AND METHODS: The study included 78 children (32 girls, 46 boys) 10.4 +/- 0.6 years at the time of transplantation. We followed renal function through the natriuretic phase of 6 occasions of drug-induced recovery from minimal lesions nephrotic syndrome (MLNS). Raisins are dried grapes that are popular shelf-stable snacks. Three commercially important types of raisins were studied: sun-dried (natural), artificially dried (dipped), and sulfur dioxide-treated (golden) raisins. Dietary fiber composition was analyzed by AACC method 32-25. Polysaccharides were hydrolyzed, and the resulting sugars were analyzed by colorimetric and gas chomatographic methods. Duodenal and ileal calcium transport was studied by 45Ca uptake and estimation of unidirectional fluxes in vitro in kidney-intact and 5/6-nephrectomized rats. After normal-calcium diet, calcium transport was impaired by uremia in the duodenum but not in the ileum. However, 5/6-nephrectomized rats on low-calcium diet showed, in concert with impaired growth, a reduced calcium transport both in duodenum and ileum. Comparing data after normal- and low-calcium diets, the ileal adaptation to low-calcium diet was intact in mild renal failure but abolished in severe uremia (urea less than 100 mg/dl).
