Epidemiology of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis in Italy-a Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Understanding prevalence of diseases within specific regions of a country is important for optimal allocation of healthcare resources/funds. We performed a systematic review to obtain a clearer picture of the epidemiology of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis across and within specific regions of Italy. RECENT FINDINGS: Prevalence of psoriasis in specific regions showed more variability (0.8-4.5%) than that in the total population (1.8-3.1%). Prevalence of psoriatic arthritis in the general population was reported for only two regions, Chiavari (0.09%) and Marche (0.42%). Al…

Asbestos Ban in Italy: A Major Milestone, Not the Final Cut.

Background and history: Italy was the main asbestos producer and one of the greatest consumers in 20th century Europe until the asbestos ban was introduced in 1992. Asbestos exposure affected the population in a wide range of working environments, namely mining and marketing of asbestos, asbestos cement production, shipyards and textile industries. This also determined a widespread environmental asbestos exposure affecting the surrounding communities. Methods: To investigate the drivers and difficulties of the process leading to the asbestos ban and its subsequent implementation, we focused on…

Hospitalization for Charcot neuroarthropathy in diabetes: A population study in Italy.

AIMS: To provide data on hospitalization and incidence rates of Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) and its relation to lower limbs' amputations/revascularizations in population with diabetes of Italy as well as of one of its regions (Tuscany). METHODS: Hospitalizations with CN diagnosis (codes ICD-9-CM: 7130, 7135, 7138) have been recorded in people with diabetes over years 2003-2013 in Italy and 2008-2015 in Tuscany. Amputations, peripheral vascular disease, revascularizations and infections were likewise evaluated. RESULTS: Between 2003 and 2013 CN hospitalizations were very infrequent in Italy…

Angiostrongylus vasorum in wolves in Italy: prevalence and pathological findings.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode residing in the heart and pulmonary vessels of dogs and wild carnivores. In Europe the red fox is its reservoir, while only three records from wolves have been published. Angiostrongylus vasorum has a worldwide distribution, and many pieces of evidence demonstrate that it is spreading from endemic areas to new ones. In Italy, A. vasorum was reported with increasing frequency in dogs and foxes in the last decades, and now it is considered endemic throughout the country. Angiostrongylus vasorum can be asymptomatic or cause respiratory and circula…

A case of Paget from a Northern Italy medieval necropolis.

An excavation conducted in 2002 by the Lombardy Archaeological Heritage in the St. Giulio Church (Cassano Magnago-Northern Italy) revealed an adult skeleton with an important alteration of the left femur. The femur, longer than the contralateral, exhibited an expansion of the full diaphysis; the surface was coarsened and porous. In cross section, it appeared that almost all the cortical bone had been converted into cancellous bone. Macroscopic and radiological alterations are suggestive of the monostotic form of Paget's disease, a chronic disorder, characterized by focal areas of excessive ost…

Hepatitis E in a region of Italy: An emerging autochthonous infection?

BACKGROUND: Recent data showed an increasing number of "autochthonous" cases of hepatitis E in Italy. AIMS: Analysing cases of acute hepatitis E to define frequency, clinical features, prognosis and risk factors. METHODS: We considered all the patients admitted to our Regional Hospital between August 2011 and September 2014, with a diagnosis of acute hepatitis; serological screening for hepatitis B, C and A viruses was performed; in the event of negative results, sera were tested for cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr and hepatitis E viruses. RESULTS: Among 200 patients, 66 were affected by vira…

Peritoneal mesothelioma in Italy: Trends and geography of mortality and incidence.

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal mesothelioma, a very rare and lethal malignancy, has not been investigated as extensively as pleural mesothelioma, although the role of asbestos exposure in its occurrence is well-known. Data from Italy are relevant, as it was the largest European asbestos producer, and asbestos was widely used in many economic activities. METHODS: A population-based mortality and incidence analysis was performed in Italy. Data sources were the National Multiple-causes-of-death Database (1995-2010) and the Italian Mesothelioma Register (1993-2008). RESULTS: We found an increasing tre…

Incidence of infection-associated cancers in Italy and prevention strategies.

Chronic infections and infestations represent major causes of cancer. Overall, Helicobacter pylori, HPV, HBV, and HCV are estimated to account for 15% of all human cancers. We have estimated that cancers associated with 6 pathogens in Italy account for 31,000 yearly cases, 42.0%of which is attributable to H. pylori, 34.7%to HBV and HCV, 19.8%to HPV, 2.9%to KSHV, and 0.2% to EBV. These figures represent 8.5% of all incident cases of cancer in Italy. The implementation of anti-HBV vaccination programs in countries with high endemicity resulted in a significant impact on the incidence of hepatoce…

Piccolipiù, a multicenter birth cohort in Italy: protocol of the study.

BACKGROUND: The fetal and infant life are periods of rapid development, characterized by high susceptibility to exposures. Birth cohorts provide unique opportunities to study early-life exposures in association with child development and health, as well as, with longer follow-up, the early life origin of adult diseases. Piccolipiù is an Italian birth cohort recently set up to investigate the effects of environmental exposures, parental conditions and social factors acting during pre-natal and early post-natal life on infant and child health and development. We describe here its main characteri

Noninvasive and invasive ventilation and enteral nutrition for ALS in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: We performed a population-based study to assess amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) survival after noninvasive ventilation (NIV), invasive ventilation (IV), and enteral nutrition (EN). METHODS: We included patients diagnosed from 2000 to 2009 in Modena, where a prospective registry and a Motor Neuron Diseases Centre have been active since 2000. RESULTS: Of the 193 incident cases, 47.7% received NIV, 24.3% received tracheostomy, and 49.2% received EN. A total of 10.4% of the patients refused NIV, 31.6% refused IV, and 8.7% refused EN. The median survival times after NIV, IV, and

Surveillance and vaccination coverage of measles and rubella in Northern Italy.

Measles and rubella are infectious diseases and humans are the only reservoir of these infections. Effective vaccines are available with the potential for measles (MV) and rubella (RuV) virus eradication. According to the World Health Organisation guidelines, a national plan was approved in Italy in 2013 to achieve the MV/RuV elimination by 2015, and active MV/RuV integrated surveillance initiated. Towards this purpose, a regional laboratory centre was set up on 1 September 2013 in Lombardy, Northern Italy. This paper aimed at: (1) evaluating measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine coverage and MV…

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in donkeys (Equus asinus) in Italy.

Toxoplasmosis, an important zoonosis, can be transmitted by eating meat or drinking milk of animals infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Samples were collected from 238 donkeys in the year 2010 in Italy, which included 207 females and 31 males of five breeds and crossbreeds with the average age 9 years (1 month-24 years). Sera were tested for T. gondii antibodies using a latex agglutination test and the indirect fluorescent antibody test; 5 and 8% seropositivity were recorded, respectively. We found significant correlation between the presence of T. gondii antibodies and sex, age, grazing and pres…
