A 40-year-old man received blood transfusion in December 1998 because of gastric bleeding from a peptic ulcer. One month later, he developed febrile hemolytic anemia. Administration of high doses of glucocorticoid significantly reduced the hemolysis, but did not cure the disease. To investigate the cause of the hemolysis, the patient was transferred to our hospital in May 1999. Between 1991 and 1993, the intestinal contents and feces of wild animals in Japan were examined for the presence of Listeria. The wild animals examined included 623 mammals (11 species) and 996 birds (18 species). Listeria species were isolated from 38 (6.1%) of the 623 mammalian samples and 133 (13.4%) of 996 bird samples. The highest incidence of Listeria in the mammals was found in Japanese monkeys (20.0%) and that in birds was found in crows (43.2%). There have been few reports on examining the susceptibility of variant angina. Accordingly, the major histocompatibility complexes (HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR) of unrelated Japanese patients with variant angina were examined. There were no significant differences in the frequency of HLA-A,-B, -C, and -DR antigens between patients and controls (n = 100). Although endothelial dysfunction with pathological abnormalities is suggested to be one of the etiological factors in vasospasm, immunogenetic abnormalities linked to HLA system might not play a role in the pathogenesis of variant angina.

Pulmonary embolism is a leading cause of death and morbidity in the perioperative period. To obtain a contemporary overview of the epidemiology of acute pulmonary embolism, a questionnaire was mailed to anesthesia department chair-persons at 179 hospitals in Japan. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to clarify the incidence rate of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) during the last decade in Japan.

The use of mouthguards in contact sports effectively prevents oral injury and preserves oral structures. We investigated oral injuries and awareness concerning mouthguards among Japanese high school soccer and rugby players. A yeast-like fungus isolated from a granulomatous and ulcerative skin lesion in a mongrel cat was mycologically examined. We report a 64-year-old Japanese man with oculo-neuroborreliosis. His clinical features consisted of polyarthralgia, keratoconjunctivitis, chorioretinitis, optic neuritis, confusion, and polyradiculitis. Assay of antibodies to Borrelia species detected IgG-antibody to B. garinii in both serum and CSF. Progressive declining of serum IgG antibody titer against Borrelia garinii, in parallel with clinical improvement, was observed after administration of ceftriaxone.

Limb-body wall complex is a malformation of body and limbs with craniofacial defects. We describe here the epidemiology of this complex using the population-based registry data in the Kanagawa Birth Defects Monitoring Program during the period 1982-1991. Eleven infants (11/428,599 births) with the complex were ascertained in the study. The incidence and spectrum of the defects observed in our cases were similar to those of other studies.
