DHA-enriched phosphatidylserine alleviates high fat diet-induced jejunum injury in mice by modulating gut microbiota.

A long-term high-fat diet (HFD) is one of the high-risk factors for intestinal barrier damage. Docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylserine (DHA-PS) has multiple biological activities, while its protective effect on HFD-caused jejunum injury remains unknown. Thus, the present study investigated the protective effect of DHA-PS on HFD-induced jejunum injury in mice. Our results showed that DHA-PS (100 mg per kg per d) could protect against HFD-caused jejunum injury by decreasing the levels of inflammatory factors such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the s…

Selenium Deficiency Induces Inflammatory Response and Decreased Antimicrobial Peptide Expression in Chicken Jejunum Through Oxidative Stress.

Selenium deficiency can affect the level of selenoprotein in organs and tissues and cause inflammation. However, the mechanism of selenium deficiency on jejunal injury in chickens remains unclear. In this study, we established a selenium deficiency model in chickens by feeding a low selenium diet and observed ultrastructural and pathological changes in the jejunum. The expression levels of 25 selenoproteins, the levels of oxidative stress, tight junction (TJ) proteins, and antimicrobial peptides (AMP), as well as the expression levels of factors related to inflammatory signaling pathways, were…

[Late functional outcome after reconstruction of the upper aerodigestive tract with free transplanted microvascular anastomosed jejunum].

Since 1983, 90 autologous jejunal transplantations for reconstruction of the upper digestive tract have been performed in 89 patients (9 females, 80 males, average age 56.3 years). 73 patients were operated primarily, in 16 patients a recurrent tumor had been treated. One patient received a second jejunal graft after necrosis. In these heterogenous patients, the primary tumor was located in the hypopharynx 48 times, in the larynx 21 times, in the oropharynx 19 times and twice in the oral cavity. There was nearly always tumor stage III or IV without distant metastases. Following locoregional tu

IRAK-M Knockout Exacerbates Inflammation in Mice Infected with Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus: Observation in the Jejunum.

Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (SEZ) causes severe infections, but the role of the negative regulator interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase M (IRAK-M) in SEZ-induced inflammation is unclear. In this study, male C57BL/6 mice received a single intraperitoneal injection of SEZ at 2 × 107 CFU and were examined 24 h post-injection. SEZ infection triggered overt jejunal hemorrhage and upregulation of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α mRNA, confirming local inflammation, with a concurrent marked reduction in both mRNA and protein levels of IRAK M in the jejunum, hinting at its possible role. We next…

Early fecal microbiota transplantation continuously improves chicken growth performance by inhibiting age-related Lactobacillus decline in jejunum.

BACKGROUND: At an early age, chickens commonly exhibit a rise in the average daily gain, which declines as they age. Further studies indicated that the decrease in chicken growth performance at a later age is closely associated with an age-related decline in Lactobacillus abundance in the small intestines. Whether inhibiting the age-related decline in Lactobacillus in the small intestine by early fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) could improve chicken growth performance is an interesting question. RESULTS: 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed a higher jejunal Lactobacillus abundance in high

Neurochemical Remodelling of the Enteric Nervous System Neurons in the Porcine Jejunum Following Low-Dose Glyphosate Exposure.

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, is under scrutiny for its potential neurotoxic effects. This study investigated whether oral exposure to glyphosate, even at doses currently considered safe in Europe, alters the neurochemical profile of enteric nervous system (ENS) neurons in the porcine jejunum. Fifteen immature female pigs were allocated to three groups: control (C), low-dose (G50; 50 µg/kg b.w./day), and higher-dose (G500; 500 µg/kg b.w./day). Following 28 days of exposure, jejunal samples were subjected to double-labelling immunofluorescence staining for neuronal markers, including Hu …

Holothuria polii Extract as a Potential Anticoccidial Agent: Evidence of Its MUC2 Regulatory Impact in Murine Jejunum.

Eimeria is a parasite that causes coccidiosis in a variety of animals, leading to nutritional imbalances, issues with food digestion and absorption, low weight, and intestinal inflammation of varying degrees in its hosts. Anticoccidial medication resistance has become a significant obstacle to disease control efforts, leading to a renewed focus on discovering novel chemicals for alternative therapeutic approaches. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of Holothuria polii extract (HpE) in treating eimeriosis in mice. Five groups of mice were studied, with E. papillata sporulat

Arteriovenous Malformation of the Jejunum, Causing Massive Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Treated With Intraoperative Enteroscopy Guidance: A Case Report.

Arteriovenous malformations of the small intestine are an important differential in cases of occult gastrointestinal bleeding. Localization of the source of gastrointestinal bleeding can be a difficult task, especially in resource-limited settings where balloon-assisted enteroscopy or video capsule endoscopy are unavailable. We herein report the use of intraoperative enteroscopy to help localize and resect a short bowel segment containing a bleeding arteriovenous malformation of the jejunum in a 50-year-old man who presented with hematochezia and pallor leading to hemorrhagic shock. Esophagoga…

MicroRNA Expression Profiling in Porcine Liver, Jejunum and Serum upon Dietary DON Exposure Reveals Candidate Toxicity Biomarkers.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a frequent mycotoxin worldwide, impairs human and animal health. The response of microRNAs, small non-coding RNAs, to DON has been scarcely investigated, but holds remarkable potential for biomarker applications. Hence, we aimed to investigate DON-induced changes in the microRNA expression in porcine liver, jejunum and serum by combining targeted and untargeted analyses. Piglets received uncontaminated feed or feed containing 900 µg/kg and 2500 µg/kg DON for four weeks, followed by a wash-out period. In tissue, only slight changes in microRNA expression were detected, wit…

Research Note: Jejunum phosphatases and systemic myo-inositol in broiler chickens fed without or with supplemented phytase.

As a constituent of animal cells, myo-inositol (MI) has been hypothesized to be crucial in several metabolic and regulatory pathways. Recently, it was shown that dietary phytase contributes to release of MI from phytate in the poultry digestive tract, increasing its systemic concentrations. This study investigated the activities of phosphatases in the jejunum and systemic plasma MI concentration in broilers not supplemented or supplemented with phytase through analyses based on modifications from commercial enzyme activity kits. Three hundred sixty male Ross 308 broilers were randomly allocate…

[Revascularized over-long jejunum segments in single stage reconstruction of voice and deglutition function after total laryngopharyngectomy].

After surgery of advanced larynx and pharynx malignancies, a main problem is reconstruction of swallowing and voice. With microvascular small bowl transplantation, we have been able to use a 30 cm segment of jejunum in a one-stage procedure to reconstruct extended defects of the oropharynx, and total by hypopharynx, as well as to create a speaking-syphon as devised by Ehrenberger. The surgical technique is described and we now report the results achieved in our first five patients. This new method enables pharyngectomized and laryngectomized patients to speak and to eat without any aspiration …
