The nurse cell-larva complex of nematodes of the genus Trichinella plays an important role in the survival of the larva in decaying muscles, frequently favouring the transmission of the parasite in extreme environmental conditions. The ultrastructure of the nurse cell-larva complex in muscles from different hosts infected with T. nativa (a walrus and a polar bear), T. spiralis (horses and humans), T. pseudospiralis (a laboratory mouse) and T. papuae (a laboratory mouse) were examined. Analysis with transmission electron microscope showed that the typical nurse cell structure was present in all…

In this review, we focus on the role of the L3 (third-stage larva) of lymphatic filarial nematodes in immunomodulation and in the development of protective immunity. Studies in the mouse models of Brugia have been fundamental to our understanding of the mechanisms by which infection with L3 results in Th2 responses and the active suppression of Th1 responses. The relevance of these phenomena to the human infection is discussed.

We report the case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman with an unidentified intraocular parasite. The parasite, which had been acquired in Thailand, caused cutaneous larva migrans, sacroileitis, and 2 years later optic neuritis and panuveitis. The patient was successfully treated with ivermectin and albendazole. The diagnostic possibilities of this peculiar presentation are discussed. Parasitic infections are a leading cause of medical problems in travelers to tropical countries.1 While most parasites cause gastrointestinal problems, some may migrate throughout the body and lodge in critical organ…

A case of fatal cardiac larva migrans in a 10-year-old boy is described. The autopsy findings were quite dramatic, with a bosselated, sessile polypoid mass involving the left ventricular myocardium and protruding into the ventricular lumen. The precise morphologic characterization of the zoonotic ascarid larva was impaired by advanced resorption of the larva by an inflammatory infiltrate. Nonetheless, morphometry of the larval remnants strongly suggested the raccoon ascarid, Baylisascaris procyonis, as the causative agent.

Toxocariasis is a frequent disease in children, but the severe clinical manifestations are rare in the literature (diffuse interstitial pneumonia with hypoxaemia and acute severe asthma). The diagnosis is made thanks to the reliability of serological techniques (the ELISA test and using antigen excretion-secretion tests of the larvae of Toxocara canis). The authors report a case of acute severe eosinophilic pneumonia whose outcome was rapidly favourable following steroid therapy; the existence of positive Toxocara canis serology with a contamination risk of the patient in the domestic environm…

OBJECTIVES: We report two cases of cutaneous larva migrans in pregnant women.
METHODS: Due to pregnancy, systemic therapy was not considered. Limited efficacy of cryotherapy and unavailability of topical thiabendazole led to the in-office preparation of 10% albendazole ointment.
RESULTS: Application of this compound thrice daily under occlusion for 10 days led to complete resolution without recurrence. No safety signals were reported during pregnancy follow-up and until birth.
CONCLUSION: Topical albendazole may be an effective, safe, and painless treatment of cutaneous larva migrans. Large…

Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM) is a helminthic infection that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. It is caused by zoonotic hookworms, predominantly the Ancylostoma species, which infrequently infect humans. Hookworms primarily inhabit the small intestine of canines and felines, where adult worms release eggs that are excreted in the host's feces into the environment. Human infections occur through direct contact with contaminated soil, with humans serving as dead-end hosts for parasites. Clinically, CLM presents as erythematous, serpiginous, and intensely pruritic cutaneous erupti…

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) results from hookworm larvae infestation, mainly Ancylostoma braziliense or Ancylostoma caninum. It is common in Sub-Saharan Africa, often acquired through soil contact, especially in sandy beaches, manifesting as serpiginous, erythematous and intensely pruritic tracts within the epidermis, and presenting with diverse clinical appearances. Diagnosis is mostly clinical; however, dermoscopy can enhance diagnostic accuracy and distinction from mimics. The current body of literature is deficient in its representation of dermoscopic data for CLM in Black patients. This…

Cutaneous larva migrans is a tropical dermatosis acquired through the helminthic infection. It is caused by penetration of animal hookworm larva in patient with history of walking barefoot on soil or beaches or with history of travel to tropical areas. It usually presents clinically as a pruritic serpiginous lesion with a trailing. Here, we report three cases who presented as asymptomatic to pruritic thread like serpiginous lesion on cutaneous examination. Cutaneous larva migrans was diagnosed clinically and proper treatment was done with complete regression of manifestations within a week. Al…

Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the ingestion of raw or uncooked seafood infected with third-stage larvae of anisakid nematodes. Generally, the larvae parasites live at the surface of the mucosa, but in this case, the larva deeply invaded its head into the gastric mucosa and was not removable with conventional biopsy forceps. In our case, we demonstrated the usefulness of jumbo forceps to remove the Anisakis larva in such a situation.

Toxocara canis is an important zoonotic roundworm distributed worldwide. The infective larvae of T. canis are one of the causes of visceral larva migrans (VLM), a clinical syndrome in humans. Diagnosing VLM is difficult, and the differential diagnosis of the larval development stage is limited. Therefore, this experimental research aimed to diagnose T. canis larvae using a molecular method, not only in liver tissue, which is the most commonly affected tissue, but also in the limb muscles, lungs and brain tissues. For this purpose, 24 BALB/c mice were infected with 1000 embryonated T. canis egg…
