BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of leukemia cutis in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is important because these lesions can precede acute peripheral blood or bone marrow transformation. Leukemia cutis is usually easy to recognize, but atypical lesions are not well described.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe unusual specific lesions in MDS.
METHODS: Data from patients with myeloid malignancies and leukemia cutis were reviewed. Only patients with MDS and cutaneous lesions different from typical tumors were included. Clinical features were analyzed.
RESULTS: Four patients with MDS and unusual

Transient myeloproliferative disease (TMD) is often associated with a trisomy 21 cell line, but it is not always associated with clinical signs of Down syndrome. We report on a phenotypically normal newborn boy who presented with a high white blood cell count, undifferentiated blasts, and cutaneous leukemic infiltrates and compare this patient with the literature on TMD and trisomy 21. Chromosome analysis of bone marrow, and subsequently of skin fibroblasts, documented constitutional mosaicism for trisomy 21. A decrease in the frequency of blast cells paralleled a decrease in cells demonstrati

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a hematologic disorder that is characterized by an abnormal proliferation of immature myeloid cells. Granulocytic sarcomas are clusters of leukemic myeloid cells that may develop as a result of AML. Oral manifestations of AML are common and often involve enlargements of the gingiva and/or mucosal tissue from direct leukemia cell infiltration. We describe the case history of a 50-year-old man who had an ulcerative lesion of the oral mucosa that was determined to be a granulocytic sarcoma of AML-MO subtype. The combination of both the subtype and clinical pres

This case is of an unusual florid reactive CD4+ T Cell lymphocytosis involving lymph node (LN) and overshadowing residual B chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A 65 year old female with a 9 year history of untreated B-CLL presented with weight loss, splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy. B-CLL was confirmed on the basis of peripheral blood lymphocytosis, bone marrow trephine findings and flow cytometry analysis. However, the LN biopsy showed appearances of a diffuse small lymphocytic population mimicking a leukemic T-cell infiltrate. Immunophenotyping and molecular analysis demonstrated the major c

BACKGROUND: Polycythemia is a rare disease that can cause hypertension. Secondary polycythemia with increased production of erythropoietin (EPO) is associated with several kidney diseases, including hydronephrosis and cystic disease. However, there have been no reports of a case presenting with polycythemia secondary to bilateral nephromegaly caused by renal infiltration of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Japanese man presented with marked hypertension (215/150 mmHg) with renal insufficiency (creatinine 3.7 mg/dL), proteinuria, hematuria, bilatera

BACKGROUND: Among marginal zone lymphomas (MZLs), bone marrow (BM) involvement features are well established in the splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL); few data are available for extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) and nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Incidence and patterns of histologic BM involvement are studied in 120 MZL patients (48 SMZL, 59 EMZL, 13 NMZL) at onset and during follow-up; relationships between clinical features, BM histology and flow cytometry (FC) are analyzed.
RESULTS: At diagnosis, BM involvement occurs in 90% SMZL, 22% EMZL and 54% NM

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was used to determine the presence and amount of human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) proviral DNA in central nervous system (CNS) tissue obtained at autopsy from 6 patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), 1 patient with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and CNS infiltration of leukemic cells, and 9 control subjects with other neurological disorders. HTLV-I pX and env but not pol DNA were detected in CNS tissue from 5 of 6 patients with HAM/TSP. The ATL samples were positive for pX, env, and pol DNA by PCR.

We had shown previously that the prevalence of human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I)-antibody positivity is high in Jamaican non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients and that virus-positive patients have the clinical features and poor prognosis of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). Sixty-two % of 45 NHL patients diagnosed consecutively between 2/1/82 and 1/31/84 and studied prospectively were HTLV-I-antibody positive. Skin involvement (38%), hypercalcemia (44%), and leukemia (40%) were unusually prevalent and there was a strong association (p less than 0.05) with HTLV-I-antibody

We report a 45-year-old man with monocytosis and right hemiparesis. The patient suffered from an acute myocardial infarction from which he recovered completely when he was 42 years old. One year prior to his death, he was found to have increase in monocyte count (35.5% of leukocytes) in peripheral blood and splenomegaly; he was admitted to the hematology service of our hospital. He was diagnosed as having chronic myelomonocytic leukemia after bone marrow examination. He was treated with radiation therapy with improvement in splenomegaly. In May of 1995, he had fever, anemia, and thrombocytopen

At de National Institute of Pediatrics in Mexico City, the ultrasonographic findings of hepatoblastomas were analyzed in order to establish the echographic pattern of this malignant liver tumor. The ultrasonic images of patient's livers dating back six years were retrospectively reviewed. The hyperrecognisance of the hepatoblastoma as a solid, poorly limited mass, with or without the presence of calcifications, with the displacement of the portal vein and frequently found in the right lobe, were considered as the most relevant echographic characteristics of the hepatoblastoma. The echographic

Leukaemia cutis or cutaneous infiltration of neoplastic myeloid or lymphoid cells is usually seen in the acute myelomonocytic and acute monocytic variants of acute myeloid leukaemia. Here, we report a case of acute promyelocytic leukaemia who achieved remission, presenting with skin lesions, the biopsy of which revealed leukaemia cutis, heralding the relapse of the disease. After establishing the diagnosis with bone marrow analysis, the patient was started on daunorubicin chemotherapy along with arsenic trioxide and all-trans retinoic acid. Afterwards, the skin lesions resolved, and the patien

Grover's disease (GD), or transient acantholytic dermatosis, is a persistent recurrent dermatosis that usually occurs in men older than 50 years. Rare cases of GD and hematologic malignancy in the same cutaneous biopsy specimen have been reported. We report a case of GD in association with leukemia cutis. A 72-year-old man with a history of myelodysplastic syndrome presented with numerous pruritic papules on the torso, which were clinically diagnosed as GD. A skin biopsy revealed foci of suprabasal acantholysis and dyskeratosis consistent with GD and dense aggregates of mononuclear atypical ce

CLINICAL CASE: A 69-year-old man with a history of acute myeloblastic leukemia-M1 presented with bilateral conjunctival injection. Ophthalmological examination revealed lesions located at the upper tarsal conjunctiva of the right eye and lower tarsal conjunctiva of both eyes. Histological and immunohistochemical studies confirmed conjunctival myeloid sarcoma. The patient died due to multiorgan failure three months later.
DISCUSSION: Extramedullary recurrence of leukemia can appear as an ocular manifestation that brings about a recurrence of the leukemia, leading to a poor prognosis.

Although 60% of AML patients respond well to standard chemotherapy, most patients eventually relapse, develop chemoresistance, and do not survive more than five years. Targeted therapies, including analogs of imiquimod belonging to the family of imiqualines, emerged as promising agents against AML. Notably, the first-generation imiqualine EAPB0503 proved selective potency against nucleophosmin-1-mutant (NPM1c) AML. Recently, chemical modifications of EAPB0503 led to the development of the lead compound from the second generation, EAPB02303. Here, we demonstrate that EAPB02303 displays 200-fold

AML1-ETO, the most common fusion oncoprotein by t (8;21) in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), enhances hematopoietic self-renewal and leukemogenesis. However, currently no specific therapies have been reported for t (8;21) AML patients as AML1-ETO is still intractable as a pharmacological target. For this purpose, leukaemia cells and AML1-ETO-induced murine leukaemia model were used to investigate the degradation of AML1-ETO by melatonin (MLT), synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland. MLT remarkedly decreased AML1-ETO protein in leukemic cells. Meanwhile, MLT induced apoptosis, decreased pro
