Island and Riverine populations of Alouatta belzebul from the Brazilian Amazon parasitized by Pediculus mjobergi.

Mammalian lice are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that remain on the host throughout the life cycle. This study showed an endangered wild howler species (Alouatta belzebul) parasitized by Pediculus mjobergi. Twenty-seven primates were rescued during wildlife rescue activities in the process of vegetation suppression at the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE), located on the lower Xingu River, in the Brazilian Amazon basin. Among the 27 primates examined from two vegetal formations (alluvial rainforest and liana-infested forest) areas, 13 (48.15%) were parasitized by lice with all

A comparison of a single occasion treatment of head louse infestation with phenothrin liquid shampoo or a carbaryl lotion.

Fifty subjects with head louse infestation were recruited into a controlled trial to compare a phenothrin liquid shampoo with a carbaryl lotion. Twenty-seven subjects were treated with phenothrin and 23 with carbaryl, each formulation being applied only on a single occasion. Subjects were inspected for evidence of live lice and eggs at 24 hours and 3 to 4 weeks after application of treatment. The results showed that both the phenothrin liquid shampoo and the carbaryl lotion were effective in killing adult lice and viable eggs. No statistically significant difference in treatment efficacy was o

Molecular screening for Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Coxiella in head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) collected from primary school girls in Fars Province, Iran (2024).

OBJECTIVE: Lice are obligate ectoparasites divided into two main families: Pediculidae and Phthiridae. Body lice are known vectors of bacterial pathogens like Rickettsia, which cause diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. Although head lice are genetically similar to body lice, they have long been considered a nuisance rather than a medical threat. This is particularly concerning for primary school girls, a vulnerable group with high infestation rates. This study aimed to detect deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma in head lice collected from female

Effects of the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus, on caged layers.

When 23-, 35-, and 49-week old Ideal 236 White Leghorn hens were infested with the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus, percentage egg production 12 weeks later had decreased by 16, 34, and 46%. Meanwhile, the average hen weight had decreased by about 85, 300, and 450 grams compared with unifested control hens of the same age. There were also significant decreases in clutch size and feed consumption of the infested hens. All the decreases correlated with populations of lice.

Modulation of Atlantic salmon miRNome response to sea louse infestation.

MicroRNAs are non-coding RNA that plays a crucial role in post-transcriptional regulation and immune system regulation. On other hand, sea lice are prevalent parasites that affect salmon farming, generating different degrees of immune suppression depending on the salmon and sea louse species. Caligus rogercresseyi for example, which affects the salmon industry in Chile, decreases Th1 response, macrophage activation, TLR-mediated response and iron regulation in infected fish. In this study, we explore Atlantic salmon miRNome during infestation by C. rogercresseyi. Using small RNA sequencing, we

Molecular detection of the kdr T917I mutation in head lice (psocodea: pediculidae) from Malaysia and its increasing frequency over a decade.

Pediculosis capitis remains a common ectoparasitic infestation in Malaysia, particularly among children in overcrowded and resource-limited settings. Permethrin-based pediculicides continue to be widely used; however, global reports of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene raise concerns regarding reduced treatment efficacy. Despite extensive epidemiological data on infestation by head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer) in Malaysia, the molecular kdr status of local populations has not previously been examined. This study provides a temporal mo

Modelling the impact of temperature-induced life history plasticity and mate limitation on the epidemic potential of a marine ectoparasite.

Temperature is hypothesized to contribute to increased pathogenicity and virulence of many marine diseases. The sea louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is an ectoparasite of salmonids that exhibits strong life-history plasticity in response to temperature; however, the effect of temperature on the epidemiology of this parasite has not been rigorously examined. We used matrix population modelling to examine the influence of temperature on demographic parameters of sea lice parasitizing farmed salmon. Demographically-stochastic population projection matrices were created using parameters from the ex

Diversity of ectoparasites in sheep flocks in São Paulo, Brazil.

The occurrence of ectoparasites in sheep flocks is frequently reported but seldom quantified. Sheep production used to be a predominantly family activity in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), but it began to become a commercial activity in the past decade. Thus, information about the ectoparasites existing in sheep flocks has become necessary. The present data were obtained by means of questionnaires sent to all sheep breeders belonging to the 'Associação Paulista de Criadores de Ovinos' (ASPACO; São Paulo State Association of Sheep Breeders). Response reliability was tested by means of random v

Head lice and the use of spinosad.

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestations are responsible for social and economic distress. Despite a reported increase in resistance, permethrin 1% is still the first-line treatment of head lice. Alternative topical pediculicidal agents include malathion and benzyl alcohol, but resistance is of growing concern. In 2011, a new pediculicide, spinosad, was introduced. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to review the clinical pharmacology, efficacy, tolerability, and current place in therapy of spinosad for the treatment of head lice. METHODS: Pertinent articles and abstracts were identified through searches of M…

Efficacy of a grapefruit extract on head lice: a clinical trial.

Twenty children aging 2-9 years old--four boys with short hair and 16 girls with long hair--were included in a clinical test on the efficacy of a product against head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis). Their hair were exposed to Licatack, which is a recently developed new anti-louse medicinal product containing extracts of grapefruits besides high quality shampoo components. Prior to this field trial, the product Licatack was tested dermatologically to be skin safe receiving the grade "very good". The children's mothers combed the kids prior to the start of the test in order to confirm that the

Pediculosis capitis: an overlooked cause of scalp itch in Nigerian women and the role of trichoscopy in diagnosis.

Pediculosis capitis, caused by human head lice, is a common yet frequently overlooked cause of scalp pruritus. While it is historically uncommon in adults, recent reports indicate a rising incidence, particularly among adult women. This case series highlights the diagnostic challenges of pediculosis capitis infestation in adult women from Southeastern Nigeria, where persistent scalp itch is often misdiagnosed and treated as seborrhoeic dermatitis, leading to delayed or inappropriate management. Four women aged 20-41 years with persistent scalp pruritus were initially misdiagnosed as having seb

[Pediculus capitis in schoolchildren of the urban area of Nuevo León, México: Analyses of associated factors].

INTRODUCTION: Pediculosis capitis is a recurring problem affecting 6 to 12 millions of children annually; there are no epidemiological data on this subject in the state of Nuevo León, and there are few in México. Therefore, new contributions are needed to design control strategies based on factors that may predispose to head lice infestation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of Pediculus capitis in primary school children and to evaluate risk factors and individual or socioeconomic characteristics statistically associated with infestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 840 schoolc

Oral ivermectin for treatment of pediculosis capitis.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis is a highly transmissible infestation prevalent worldwide. It is an important public health problem mainly affecting children. The emergence of drug resistance and high rates of treatment failure with several topical agents makes ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug, an attractive therapeutic option for lice control. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral ivermectin in the treatment of a pediatric population with pediculosis capitis. METHODS: Children with pediculosis capitis from the ages of 6 to 15 years were recruited from an indigenous communi

Persistence of the activity of topical ivermectin against biting lice (Bovicola bovis).

To assess the persistence of the activity of topical ivermectin against a natural challenge with biting lice (Bovicola bovis), 90 mixed-breed cattle that had been treated to remove lice, were blocked by bodyweight within sex and randomly allocated to three treatments: untreated control, doramectin at 200 micrograms/kg by subcutaneous injection, and ivermectin at 500 micrograms/kg by topical application. Forty-five pens were blocked into three groups of 15, and the blocks of pens were randomly allocated to three 14-day challenge periods starting 21, 28 and 35 days after treatment. There were fi

Morphological discrimination of human lice (Anoplura: Pediculidae) by eggs' cap-like operculum.

Human lice have long been parasites of humans and are responsible for several epidemics in human medical history. However, their morphology, particularly head and body lice, remains very similar. In this study, we discriminate human louse species based on the number, shape and size of aeropyles (respiratory pores) of the egg operculum as well as the size of the respiratory orifice in the aeropyles. For this purpose, lice and eggs were collected from infested patients referring to Parasitology Department of Avicenne Hospital (Bobigny, France) and analyzed morphologically. The microscopic examin
