Traumatic loss: Mental health consequences and implications for treatment and prevention.

Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DSM-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters. Topics addressed include diagnostic criteri

Trajectories after first-episode psychosis: Complement to ambiguous outcomes of long-term antipsychotic treatment by exploring a few hidden cases.

AIM: Patient's long-term phenomenology after first-episode psychosis could be blurred due to early intervention. The contradictory messages regarding necessity of long-term antipsychotic treatment derived from different methodologies warrants careful reappraisal. METHODS: We approached a group of patients lost to follow-up in a previous study. Targeting these 44 missing patients, we sent 2 carefully worded letters to invite them for interviews to see if their life trajectories were different from those who stayed in a university-based hospital system. RESULTS: A total of 21 patients replied,

The obligatory role of Activin A in the formation of heterotopic bone in Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder that presents at birth with only minor patterning defects, but manifests its debilitating pathology early in life with episodic, yet progressive and cumulative, heterotopic ossification (HO) of ligaments, tendons, and a subset of major skeletal muscles. The resulting HO lesions are endochondral in nature, and appear to be linked to inflammatory stimuli arising in association with known injuries, or from inflammation linked to normal tissue repair. FOP is caused by gain-of-function mutations in ACVR1, which encodes a type I

[Pathogenesis and treatment of "inflammation cancer transformation" of ulcerative colitis based on "Kenang" theory].

Ulcerative colitis(UC) is a recurrent, chronic, nonspecific inflammatory bowel disease. The longer the course of the disease, the higher the risk of cancerization. In recent years, the incidence and mortality rates of colon cancer in China have been increasing year by year, seriously threatening the life and health of patients. Therefore, studying the mechanism of "inflammation cancer transformation" in UC and conducting early intervention is crucial. The "Kenang" theory is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) theory of phlegm and blood stasis. It is

Current perspectives for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia.

With an annual incidence of 1-2 in a million, Ph*(+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal hematopoietic stem cell disease that makes myeloid neoplastic cells breed out of control. This BCR-ABL(+) myeloproliferative disease makes up about 15%-20% of all leukemia cases in adults. CML is seen more in males than females, with a rate of three to two. However, it does not show differences in prevalence in terms of age. CML consists of three clinical phases. The first one is the chronic phase, defined by rising white blood cell levels and also by myeloid proliferation and bone marrow maturation

Estimating the fiscal impact of rare diseases using a public economic framework: a case study applied to hereditary transthyretin-mediated (hATTR) amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: A wide range of rare diseases can have fiscal impacts on government finances that extend beyond expected healthcare costs. Conditions preventing people from achieving national lifetime work averages will influence lifetime taxes paid and increase the likelihood of dependence on public income support. Consequently, interventions that influence projected lifetime work activity, morbidity and mortality can have positive and negative fiscal consequences for government. The aim of this study was to apply a public economic framework to a rare disease that takes into consideration a broad

[Prognostic factors in hantavirus infections].

The hantaviruses classified in Hantavirus genus of Bunyaviridae family, may cause two different types of clinical conditions, namely hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Mortality may reach up to 40% in these infections. Hantavirus subtypes (Sin Nombre, Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, Dobrava, etc) with different virulences represent one of the most significant factors affecting the mortality. Additionally, many other factors including age, gender, humoral immune response, genetic factors, patient's clinical and laboratory findings, transfusion, mechan

Unraveling progression subtypes in people with Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG trinucleotide expansion in the huntingtin gene. The length of the CAG repeat is inversely correlated with disease onset. HD is characterized by hyperkinetic movement disorder, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive deficits, which greatly impact patient's quality of life. Despite this clear genetic course, high variability of HD patients' symptoms can be observed. Current clinical diagnosis of HD solely relies on the presence of motor signs, disregarding the other important aspects of the disease. By

Unseen Care, Unequal Worlds: Photovoice Narratives of Siblings Supporting Deafblind Adolescents in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital deafblindness is a rare and complex condition characterised by combined hearing and vision impairment, frequently accompanied by additional intellectual, developmental, and psychosocial disabilities. Adolescents with deafblindness often encounter substantial challenges during the transition from school to adulthood, particularly in low-resource settings where formal disability services are limited. While existing research has predominantly focused on parental experiences, the perspectives of siblings-who frequently assume significant caregiving and advocacy responsibilit

A phase III multisite randomised controlled trial to compare the efficacy of cannabidiol to placebo in the treatment of cannabis use disorder: the CBD-CUD study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is increasingly common and contributes to a range of health and social problems. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid recognised for its anticonvulsant, anxiolytic and antipsychotic effects with no habit-forming qualities. Results from a Phase IIa randomised clinical trial suggest that treatment with CBD for four weeks reduced non-prescribed cannabis use in people with CUD. This study examines the efficacy, safety and quality of life of longer-term CBD treatment for patients with moderate-to-severe CUD. METHODS/DESIGN: A phase III multi-s

'The Devil's Company': A Grounded Theory Study on Aging, Loneliness and Social Change Among 'Older Adult Children' in Rural Indonesia.

Introduction: As a consequence of rising life expectancies, many families are no longer made up of one, but two simultaneously aging generations. This elderly parent-older adult child (OAC) dyad has emerged as a newly overserved yet little explored demographic phenomenon. Studies on this intergenerational aging dyad and the possible ramifications of when caregivers are simultaneously aging with care-receivers are scarce, especially in low and middle-income countries. This study explored the process by which rural Indonesian OACs experience their own aging, thereby gaining insights into how thi

Mental health treatment experiences before, during, and after incarceration: Perspectives of formerly incarcerated Black men.

Black men who have been incarcerated experience worse mental health outcomes than Black men without incarceration histories, reflecting both the trauma of incarceration and barriers to adequate care. This study describes the perspectives and experiences of formerly incarcerated Black men (FIBM) with mental health treatment before, during, and after incarceration. Using a qualitative design with semistructured interviews and embedded quantitative surveys, we interviewed 29 FIBM. Quantitative data described the sample and treatment histories, while qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive

Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Pharmacological Treatment of AECOPD New Perspectives.

Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) are major drivers of morbidity, mortality, disease progression, and healthcare utilization worldwide. Evolving definitions of COPD and exacerbations, along with emerging evidence on risk stratification and treatment optimization, have prompted updates in clinical practice, most recently reflected in the 2026 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines. This review summarizes contemporary perspectives on AECOPD, with a focus on updated definitions, epidemiology, predictors, clinical impact, and cu
