Highly Selective and Visual Detection of Co2+ Using CDs/MOF-Eu Dual-Wavelength Fluorescent Hydrogels.

Contamination by the heavy metal cobalt ion (Co2+) poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and human safety. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a new method for detecting Co2+ that combines rapid response, high sensitivity and high selectivity. In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were prepared using urea and citric acid as raw materials. These were mixed with MOF-Eu and incorporated into a PA hydrogel constructed from sodium alginate (SA) and acrylamide (PAM), resulting in the successful preparation of a PA-CDs@MOF-Eu composite hydrogel with dual-wavelength independent

An "off-on" fluorescent aptasensor based on FRET and magnetic beads for detection of circulating tumor cells in lung cancer.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) serve as critical biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis monitoring, and treatment response evaluation in lung cancer. Herein, we report a novel "off-on" fluorescent aptasensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and streptavidin-modified magnetic beads (MBs) for the sensitive and specific detection of A549 CTCs in lung cancer. The sensing strategy employs a biotinylated EGFR-targeting aptamer (Apt) labeled with FAM (donor) and a complementary S1 strand modified with BHQ-1 (acceptor). In the absence of target cells, the aptamer hybridizes wi

An electrochemiluminescence sensor based on the antenna effect of lanthanide bimetallic-organic framework and europium(III) electrocatalyst as a co-reactant accelerator for sensitive detection of serum amyloid A.

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a more sensitive indicator for the early detection of infections compared to traditional biomarkers like C-reactive protein. This study aimed to construct a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor employing lanthanide bimetallic-organic framework (Eu/Tb-MOF) in conjunction with CoSn(OH)6-Au nanocomposites for precise quantification of SAA. The sensor was constructed using an Eu/Tb-MOF, where Eu3+ and Tb3+ functioned as the central metal ions and 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H3BTB) served as the organic ligand. H3BTB transmits its energy to E

Anthraquinone Rhein Mitigates Heavy Ion Radiation-Induced Lung Injury by Maintaining Thioredoxin Reductase/Thioredoxin (TrxR/Trx) Redox Homeostasis.

While heavy ion radiation, particularly carbon-ion therapy exploits high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation for precise tumor targeting through DNA/oxidative damage, its concomitant toxicity to adjacent normal tissues remains a critical limitation. Here, we investigated the radioprotective potential of Rhein, a natural anthraquinone derivative, in ionizing radiation-irradiated lung cells and murine models. In vitro, Rhein pretreatment enhanced cell viability and clonogenic survival, mitigated DNA damage (evidenced by reduced γ-H2AX foci and micronucleus formation), attenuated reactive oxyg…

A novel benzothiophene incorporated Schiff base acting as a "turn-on" sensor for the selective detection of Serine in organic medium.

A novel fluorogenic sensor N-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-methylene-4,5-dimethyl-benzene-1,2-diamine (BTMPD) was synthesized and characterized by using spectroscopic methods including UV-visible, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry. The designed fluorescent probe, owing to its remarkable properties, behaves as an efficient turn-on sensor for the sensing of amino acid Serine (Ser). Also, the strength of the probe enhances upon the addition of Ser via charge transfer, and the renowned properties of the fluorophore were duly found. The sensor BTMPD shows incredible execution potential with res

Highly selective and sensitive detection of glutathione over cysteine and homocysteine with a turn-on fluorescent biosensor based on cysteamine-stabilized CdTe quantum dots.

In this work, cysteamine (CA) stabilized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) (CA-CdTe QDs) and sodium citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared. Because of the strong electrostatic interaction and spectral overlap of emission spectrum of CA-CdTe QDs and absorption spectrum of AuNPs, a highly effective fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system was formed and the fluorescence of CA-CdTe QDs was strongly quenched. The synthesized CA-CdTe and AuNPs were self-assembled to large clusters due to the electrostatic attraction and the fluorescence of CA-CdTe was sharply quenched as a re

Phthalocyanine-Cored Fluorophores with Fluorene-Containing Peripheral Two-Photon Antennae as Photosensitizers for Singlet Oxygen Generation.

: A series of free base and Zn(II) phthalocyanines featuring fluorenyl antennae linked by methoxy or oxo bridges to the phthalocyanine core (Pc) were synthesized and characterized. Selected linear and nonlinear (two-photon absorption) optical properties of these new compounds were subsequently studied. As previously observed for related porphyrin dendrimers bearing 2-fluorenyl peripheral dendrons, an efficient energy transfer occurs from the peripheral antennae to the central phthalocyanine core following excitation in the fluorenyl-based π-π* absorption band of these chromophores. Once excite

An "off-on" phosphorescent aptasensor for the detection of thrombin based on PRET.

Thrombin plays an important role in the blood coagulation cascade and it stimulates the process of platelet aggregation. Herein, we developed a highly efficient and sensitive phosphorescent aptasensor system for the quantitative analysis of thrombin. The phosphorescence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (MPA-Mn:ZnS QDs) was gradually quenched with the addition of thrombin binding aptamers-BHQ2 (TBA-BHQ2) based on phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET). With the addition of the target analyte thrombin into the system, TBA-BHQ2 could change its spatial struct

L-cysteine capped ZnS:Mn quantum dots for room-temperature detection of dopamine with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Dopamine (DA) is one of the most important catecholamine neurotransmitters of the human central nervous system, and is involved in many behavioral responses and brain functions. Below normal DA levels in biological fluids can lead to different neurodegenerative conditions. For excess DA levels, a failure in energy metabolism is indicated. In this study, a facile room-temperature phosphorescence sensor is developed to detect DA based on l-cysteine capped Mn doped ZnS quantum dots (l-cys ZnS:Mn QDs). The QDs display a prominent orange emission band peaking at ~598nm, which is strongly quenched u

A highly sensitive protocol for the determination of Hg(2+) in environmental water using time-gated mode.

In this paper, a sensitive time-gated fluorescent sensing strategy for mercury ions (Hg(2+)) monitoring is developed based on Hg(2+)-mediated thymine (T)-Hg(2+)-T structure and the mechanism of fluorescence resonance energy transfer from Mn-doped CdS/ZnS quantum dots to graphene oxide. The authors employ two T-rich single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) as the capture probes for Hg(2+), and one of them is modified with Mn-doped CdS/ZnS quantum dots. The addition of Hg(2+) makes the two T-rich ssDNA hybrids with each other to form stable T-Hg(2+)-T coordination chemistry, which makes Mn-doped CdS/ZnS quan

Photoabsorption and resonance energy transfer phenomenon in CdTe-protein bioconjugates: an insight into QD-biomolecular interactions.

Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) possess unique photophysical properties, which are advantageous in the development of new generation robust fluorescent probes based on Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) phenomena. Bioconjugation of these QDs with biomolecules create hybrid materials having unique photophysical properties along with biological activity. The present study is aimed at characterizing QD bioconjugates in terms of optical behavior. Colloidal CdTe QDs capped with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were conjugated to different proteins by the carbodiimide protocol using N-(3-dimethyl

Probing curcumin reactive conformers in keto-enol tautomerization enhanced by clustering with t-SNE.

CONTEXT: The extensive conformational space of flexible molecules poses a significant challenge for predicting chemical reactivity through quantum chemical methods. For curcumin, whose keto-enol tautomerization is crucial to its biological activity and associated with its therapeutic potential in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, selecting meaningful conformers is particularly challenging. Traditional strategies for conformer selection that rely on variations in torsion angles may result in an excessive number of conformers. Our previously developed fragmentation-based strategy addresses

A historical reflection on our understanding of radiation-induced DNA double strand break repair in somatic mammalian cells; interfacing the past with the present.

Purpose: The International Journal of Radiation Biology (IJRB) is celebrating 60 years of publishing in 2019. IJRB has made an enormous contribution to publishing papers that have enhanced our understanding of the DNA damage response (DDR) activated following exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). The IR-induced DDR field has a rich history but many outstanding papers pass unread by young scientists overwhelmed by the current literature. We provide a historical reflection on key advances in the DDR field and interface them with current knowledge. Conclusions: DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) were

p53 mutations in tumors derived from irradiated human thyroid epithelial cells.

A non-tumorigenic human thyroid epithelial cell line (HTori-3) has been transformed into tumorigenic cells by exposure in vitro to alpha particles or gamma-radiation. These transformants were tumorigenic in athymic nude mice and tumors were transplantable into other nude mice. To further characterize processes involved in neoplastic progression, the tumor cell lines derived from these radiation-induced primary tumors were screened for mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene. p53 mutation was detected by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of exons 5 to 8 inclusive. Mutat

Low-dose total-body carbon-ion irradiations induce early transcriptional alteration without late Alzheimer's disease-like pathogenesis and memory impairment in mice.

The cause and risk factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are largely unknown. Studies on possible radiation-induced AD-like pathogenesis and behavioral consequences are important because humans are exposed to ionizing radiation (IR) from various sources. It was reported that total-body irradiations (TBI) at 10 cGy of low linear energy transfer (LET) X-rays to mice triggered acute transcriptional alterations in genes associated with cognitive dysfunctions. However, it was unknown whether low doses of IR could induce AD-like changes late after exposure. We reported previously that 10 cGy X-rays in…
