Lip Augmentation in Patients with Fitzpatrick Skin Type V and VI: Use of a Validated Lip Fullness Scale and Determining Pre-injection Lip Size Preference and Post-injection Patient Satisfaction.

Background: There is limited literature assessing cosmetic lip size preferences in darker-skinned individuals. Objective: To measure preinjection lip augmentation preferences and postinjection satisfaction using the revised Lip Fullness Scale (LFS) in female participants with Fitzpatrick Skin Type V and VI. Methods: Females, aged 21 and over, with Fitzpatrick Skin Type V and VI desiring lip augmentation were recruited from a high-volume outpatient facial plastic surgery clinic. The LFS scale was administered pre- and postinjection. FACE-Q scales which measure patient reported outcomes for faci…

Lip Trill: Aerodynamic, Acoustic, and Laryngeal Interactions.

OBJECTIVE: The lip trill (an oscillatory semioccluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercise) is commonly used by singers and speakers to improve voice production skills. The specific objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between aerodynamic and acoustic signals during lip trills. METHODS: One trained female singer performed lip trill with and without voicing and a lip trill followed immediately by a /bap:/ syllable string. The audio, airflow, electroglottography (EGG), and oral air pressure signals were obtained. EGG was used to compute EGGW25, EGG height (EGGH), and fundamental …

Infant Cleft-Lip Repair Under Local Anesthesia.

Cleft lip is the most common congenital facial abnormality in the world. Repair in the pediatric population is typically done under general anesthesia around 3 or 4 months of age, though general anesthesia at an early age may have adverse neurodevelopmental effects. This case report describes a novel instance of cleft lip repair in an infant done under local anesthesia in an office setting and talks about preoperative screening, procedural technique, and benefits of utilizing local anesthesia compared with general anesthesia.

Cleft Lip Appearance Secondary to Ulcerating Hemangioma.

Infantile hemangiomas are frequently observed as soft tissue growths during infancy. Although many cases tend to resolve without treatment, some may lead to complications that require prompt management. Here, we present a case of a lip hemangioma in an infant that resembled a cleft lip in the newborn period and resulted in significant early and delayed complications. A 40-day-old female infant was brought with complaints of a reddish raised lesion over her upper lip. The lesion started as a small cleft on day 14 of life, which subsequently increased in size rapidly and ulcerated. She was havin…

Trauma Causing Complications After Cleft Lip Repair.

A case series of early postoperative complications due to trauma following primary cleft lip repair has been presented. Out of 193 primary cleft lip repair performed over the past 4 years, 5 patients had trauma related complications, 2 had complete wound dehiscence, 2 had partial dehiscence, and 1 presented with bleeding. This is the first report on complications following trauma after cleft lip repair. Such complications can be prevented with due vigilance during the early postoperative period. All children presented with wound dehiscence were managed with immediate suturing with good outcome…

Current trends in unilateral cleft lip repair.

The purpose of this review is to provide an in-depth look at the current perioperative and intraoperative practices for unilateral cleft lip repair. The contemporary literature reveals trends towards incorporation of curvilinear and geometric hybrid lip repairs. Perioperative practices are trending in new directions as well with the use of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols to reduce morbidity and length of stay, continued use of nasoalveolar molding, and a tendency to favor outpatient repair with more utilization of same day surgery centers. There is much room for growth, with n…

Louis Armstrong's Lip Problems: Satchmo's Syndrome Reviewed.

UNLABELLED: Rupture of the orbicularis muscle of the lips in wind musicians is known as Satchmo's syndrome because it is assumed that Louis Armstrong (nicknamed Satchmo) suffered this condition. But whether Louis Armstrong really had this problem or not has never been documented. AIMS: This study is a biographical review and an analysis of the existing photographs of Armstrong's lip with the aim of better understanding the origin and progression of his disorder. METHODS: A review was made of the most important biographies, newspapers, and magazines referring to Louis Armstrong and medical re…

Lower lip cysticercosis: An unusual case report.

Cysticercosis is a disease that occurs when humans are infected with Taenia solium larvae. The parasitic illness cysticercosis, which is common in impoverished nations, hardly ever affects the mouth. Oral cysticercosis is rare that might be challenging to diagnose clinically. This rare case report documents an oral cysticercosis case in a 38-year-old male patient who had an asymptomatic lesion in the buccal mucosa of his lower lip. A T. solium larva was identified on histopathological examination in a cystic cavity after an excisional biopsy.

Hypertrophic lichen planus on lip mimicking SCC.

The lichen planus (LP) is an inflammatory and immune-mediated disorder that can affect the hair, mucous membranes, nails, and skin. Lichen planus rarely affects the lips. In cases of lip involvement, it presents as radiated streaks, lace-like papules, and erosions. There is no report of lip LP presenting as hypertrophic plaque. Here, we report interesting and rare clinical presentations of LP in a 45-year-old male patient that presented with a verrucous hyperkeratotic plaque on the lower lip mimicking squamous cell carcinoma. However, oral examination revealed, reticulated white patches on the…

Upper lip frenotomy for neonatal breastfeeding problems.

OBJECTIVES: Upper lip tie, without concomitant tongue tie, can prevent proper flanging of the upper lip during breastfeeding, resulting in a poor seal and suck for the infant with nipple pain and maternal dissatisfaction. Due to the lack of published studies on this subject, we report our technique and outcomes for in-office release of isolated upper lip tie. METHODS: Using CPT Code 40,806 for 'incision of labial frenulum', 22 mother-infant dyads with infant age under 60 days with breastfeeding problems and a restrictive upper lip frenum were identified. These infants underwent in-office rele…
