Global burden of common cancers attributable to metabolic risks from 1990 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is usually accompanied by metabolic syndrome, which is associated with increased risk of cancer. To inform a tailored cancer screen in patients at higher risks, we estimated the global burden of cancer attributable to metabolic risks. METHODS: Data of common metabolism-related neoplasms (MRNs) were derived from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. Age-standardized, disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates and death rates of patients with MRNs were extracted from the GBD 2019 database and stratified by metabolic risk, sex, ag

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage combined with percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy for maintaining nutrition state in patients with advanced ampullary neoplasms.

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage (PTCD) combined with percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (PEJ) in maintaining the nutrition state in patients with advanced ampullary neoplasms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients who suffered from advanced ampullary neoplasms and could not tolerate internal drainage operation or biliary stent placement were enrolled. After PTCD, PEJ was implemented, and then the enteral nutrient solution + bile were instilled through PEJ tube for enteral nutrition support. Before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after surgery, the b

Cerebellar metastasis of gastrointestinal stromal tumor: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial metastases of gastro intestinal tumors are very rare. To the best of our knowledge only few cases were reported on the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of 66-year-old male that presented with headache and vomiting. Physical examination found a kinetic cerebellar syndrome. Brain CT scan and MRI showed a right cerebellar tumor. Sub-occipital craniotomy was performed and the tumor was completely resected. Surgical outcomes were marked by the occurrence of an abdominal pain two days after brain surgery. Peritonitis was diagnosed and the patient underwe

Disease spectrum and comorbidity patterns of malignant neoplasms: a multi-center hospital-based retrospective analysis of inpatient insurance claims data.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate a high comorbidity burden among patients with malignant neoplasms, but claims-based comorbidity patterns have not been systematically characterized at the regional multi-hospital level in China. METHODS: This study is a multi-center, hospital-based retrospective analysis of inpatient insurance claims. We analyzed anonymized inpatient medical insurance claims data (2016-2021) from 163 hospitals in Zhanjiang, China, focusing on hospitalized patients with a primary diagnosis of malignant neoplasms. Malignant neoplasms and comorbidities were identified using

Vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using metformin and the associated factors in Saudi Arabia.

Aspiration of lytic bone lesions is an excellent diagnostic test in the initial evaluation of primary bone neoplasia. However, cytologically, it can be difficult to differentiate osteosarcoma (OSA) from other bone neoplasms, including fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, synovial cell sarcoma, and plasma cell myeloma. The purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity and specificity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining to differentiate OSA from other tumors that express vimentin by immunocytochemistry or immunohistochemistry. ALP is a hydrolytic enzyme present in multiple tissues including

Mediastinal Epithelioid Angiosarcoma, New Insights into an Uncommon Diagnosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Angiosarcoma is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal neoplasm, accounting for 1-2% of all sarcomas. More than half are cutaneous, with the remainder arising in the deep soft tissue, breast, bone or viscera, particularly the liver, spleen and heart. Mediastinal angiosarcomas are exceedingly uncommon. While epithelioid morphology is sometimes a minor component in conventional angiosarcoma, tumors with a predominance of epithelioid morphologic features are designated as epithelioid angiosarcoma (EAS). This is a report of a 58-year-old woman presenting with severe chest pain, accompanied by worsening

Hepatoblastoma. Report of a case with cytologic, histologic and ultrastructural findings.

Hepatoblastoma, although rare, is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the liver in children. In this paper we describe a case of hepatoblastoma with unusual cytologic features and present the histologic, immunocytochemical and ultrastructural features of this neoplasm. A 7-month-old girl presented with a large hepatic mass and metastatic nodules in both lungs. Intraoperative biopsy revealed a hepatoblastoma. Aspiration biopsy yielded a highly cellular aspirate with cords of pleomorphic cells embedded in a mucoid matrix. Histologic sections showed a diffusely infiltrative neoplasm com

68 Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT in a Case of Grade 1 Pancreatic NET With Renal Vein and Gonadal Vein Tumor Thrombus.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are uncommon neoplasms comprising approximately 1%-2% of all pancreatic malignancies. They display a wide clinical spectrum ranging from indolent, well-differentiated Grade 1 lesions to aggressive, poorly differentiated tumors. While metastatic spread to the liver is relatively common, vascular invasion and tumor thrombus formation are exceedingly rare in low-grade NETs. Here, we present an unusual postoperative case of a Grade 1 PNET with tumor recurrence, kidney infiltration, and tumor thrombus involving the left renal vein and extending into the gona

Isolated pancreatic tail hydatid cyst: A rare case report.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic disease caused by a tapeworm, affecting the lung and liver. It is common in endemic areas, but often misdiagnosed. Ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging can reveal variable features, prompting alternative diagnoses. Hydatid cysts should be considered the first diagnosis for patients from endemic areas, even in organs not commonly affected. Here we report an extremely rare isolated pancreatic hydatid cyst affecting the tail and body; in imaging modalities, other lesions such as neoplasms and congenital cysts were initially considered.

A Rare Discovery of Neuroendocrine Tumor: Cardiac Mass.

Carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing neoplasms of neuroendocrine origin commonly affecting the gastrointestinal or respiratory system. They metastasize to lymph nodes and the liver based on their lymphatic and venous drainage of their tissue of origin. Metastasis to the heart is exceedingly rare accounting for <2 % of cases. Exceedingly rare is the incidental detection of cardiac carcinoid metastasis as the initial presentation of carcinoid syndrome. Here, we describe a case of metastatic cardiac carcinoid detected during a routine echocardiogram done for evaluation of a systolic murmur.

Late metastasis of an intracranial meningioma to the hard palate.

Meningiomas are benign neoplasms that arise from cellular elements of the meninges. Although meningiomas are usually considered as benign tumors, they have a potential to become aggressive and to metastasize to the extracranial structures. Distant metastasis most commonly occurs in lung, liver, and long bones. We present an extremely rare case of a delayed metastasis of a recurrent intracranial meningioma to the hard palate 19 years after the initial diagnosis. The patient underwent surgical excision without any complication and follow-up showed no recurrence.

Tuberous sclerosis complex: tumors and tumorigenesis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited disorder characterized by hamartomas in different body organs, mainly in the brain, skin, kidney, liver, lung, and heart. The clinical manifestations of TSC are the result of a mutation of one of two tumor suppressor genes, TSC1 and TSC2. Cutaneous findings in TSC should be regarded as cutaneous signs of a pivotal systemic disease. The authors elucidate the variety of neoplasms seen in TSC patients, along with their clinical significance, and suggest suitable evaluation and management strategies.

The diagnostic value of hepatocyte paraffin antibody 1 in differentiating hepatocellular neoplasms from nonhepatic tumors: a review.

Hepatocyte paraffin-1 (HepPar-1) is a recently developed monoclonal antibody that appears to identify an antigen unique to hepatocellular mitochondria. This article reviews the use of this new antibody in the differential diagnosis of primary hepatocellular neoplasms, cholangiocarcinomas, and carcinomas metastatic to the liver. Hepatocyte paraffin-1 appears to be the most sensitive and specific positive marker of hepatocellular differentiation, but like any immunohistochemical marker, should be interpreted only in the context of the overall clinicopathologic picture and as part of a panel of a

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the biliary tract with cardiac metastasis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the biliary tract (IPNB) is a rare, low-grade neoplasm limited to the bile duct mucosa. The malignant transformation rate is low, and there have been limited reports of metastasis to other organs. Herein, we presented a rare case of a patient who was diagnosed with IPNB concurrent with invasive adenocarcinoma after surgery and was diagnosed with cardiac metastasis 6 months later. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 61-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain to a local clinic. He was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with pancre

Focal peliosis hepatis in a colon cancer patient resembling metastatic liver tumor.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare benign condition characterized by the presence of multiple, randomly distributed, blood filled cystic areas of variable size within the liver parenchyma. PH is difficult to recognize and may be mistaken for neoplasm, metastases or multiple abscesses. A 75-year-old female with a previous history of colon cancer was admitted when a liver mass in the right liver lobe was found 11 mo after surgery during the follow-up period. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scan of the abdomen were performed. The initial possible diagnosis was metastatic hepatocel

Rituximab-Associated Liver Toxicity Without Known Viral Reactivation.

Rituximab is a targeted immunotherapeutic agent that has demonstrated efficacy in treating CD20+ B-cell neoplasms as well as other lymphoproliferative and autoimmune disorders. A major adverse effect of rituximab is hepatocellular injury attributed to hepatitis B viral reactivation, necessitating viral titers before treatment. In this case report, we illustrate the rare presentation of a patient with marginal zone B-cell lymphoma who experienced symptomatic liver injury with a peak 15-fold aminotransferase elevation following his first dose of rituximab, without evidence of viral reactivation.

A Rare Case of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma with Metastasis to the Thyroid Gland.

Uterine leiomyosarcomas are aggressive tumors associated with a poor prognosis. These neoplasms have high metastatic potential, more frequently affecting the lungs, liver, and peritoneum. There are very few cases of metastasis to the thyroid described in the literature. We present the case of a 47-year-old female diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma metastatic to the thyroid gland. In this case report, we want to emphasize the utility of ancillary studies to help differentiate a leiomyosarcoma from anaplastic thyroid carcinoma since cytologic evaluation alone can be challenging.

Wilms' tumor with metastasis to the left testis.

Wilms' tumors account for the vast majority of renal neoplasms in infants and children. Common areas for metastases include the lung, liver, and contralateral kidney. Less common sites include the bone, skin, brain, and orbit. We report a case of Wilms' tumor in a 13-month-old boy who, after radical left nephrectomy, developed a left testicular mass that turned out to be metastatic Wilms' tumor. The epidemiology, case history, review of the literature, and possible etiology of this rare site of metastatic Wilms' tumor are discussed.
