Pollutant reduction effects of vertical environmental reform in China.

The vertical environmental reform in China has led to the change of environmental management system from territorial management model to vertical management model. This study uses the data of 263 prefecture-level cities in China to examine the effects of China's vertical environmental reform on pollutant emissions, including industrial sulfur dioxide, wastewater emissions, and industrial fumes emissions. The findings demonstrate that vertical environmental reform resulted in a reduction in industrial sulfur dioxide, wastewater emissions, and industrial fumes emissions. And the governance effec

Two decades of majoritarian hegemony and minority subordination within Indonesian religious governance amidst polarization.

This study examines the socio legal governance and structural exclusion embedded within the implementation of the 2006 Joint Ministerial Decree (PBM 2006) in Indonesia over the past two decades. Using a qualitative critical paradigm with an extensive multilocus fieldwork approach across multiple urban and rural regions, this research investigates how localized administrative discretion shapes civic space. The empirical data are sorted through a disciplined sequential progression starting with a descriptive textual classification before transitioning to independent social theories. The results

Entrenched Opportunity: Medicaid, Health Systems, and Solutions to Homelessness.

CONTEXT: As inequality grows, politically powerful health care institutions-namely Medicaid and health systems-are increasingly assuming social policy roles, particularly related to solutions to homelessness. Medicaid and health systems regularly interact with persons experiencing homelessness who are high users of emergency health services and who experience frequent loss of or inability to access Medicaid services because of homelessness. This research examines Medicaid and health system responses to homelessness, why they may work to address homelessness, and the mechanisms by which this oc

A new perspective on intervertebral disc calcification-from bench to bedside.

Disc degeneration primarily contributes to chronic low back and neck pain. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand the spectrum of disc degeneration phenotypes such as fibrosis, ectopic calcification, herniation, or mixed phenotypes. Amongst these phenotypes, disc calcification is the least studied. Ectopic calcification, by definition, is the pathological mineralization of soft tissues, widely studied in the context of conditions that afflict vasculature, skin, and cartilage. Clinically, disc calcification is associated with poor surgical outcomes and back pain refractory to conse

Uneven paths: Soft Policy's benefits to recovery in Louisiana Parishes after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Factors driving community recovery trajectories after disaster are not well understood. We assess why some communities show stronger recoveries from disaster than others, examining the role of four policy toolkits that U.S. county governments frequently adopt to recover from disaster. Using mixed methods, we examine the cases of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with a novel dataset of recovery policies adopted within each Louisiana parish following the disasters. We typologize recovery strategies and analyze policy adoption patterns after crises. To compare which policy toolkit leads to the best re

Construction strategies and implementation pathways of resilience governance system for care risks in older adult care institutions from a social-ecological perspective.

Against the backdrop of population ageing, the governance of care risks in older adult care institutions has become a global challenge. This paper aims to construct a resilience governance system for care risks in older adult care institutions based on social-ecological systems theory, exploring its construction strategies and implementation pathways. The article first reviews the development trajectory of resilience governance theory in social sciences, then introduces social-ecological systems theory into the research on risk governance in older adult care institutions, constructing a resili

Improving agricultural injury surveillance: a comparison of incidence and type of injury event among three data sources.

BACKGROUND: Agriculture ranks as one of the most hazardous industries in the nation. Ongoing injury surveillance is key to identifying and preventing major sources of injury. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the total number and types of injuries identified from community reporting versus two newly available medical data systems. These new systems are important because they are less time consuming and expensive to maintain. METHOD: Farm injury case records from 2007 were collected for 10 NY counties from the following sources: ambulance reports, hospital data, and commun

COVID-19 and One Health Governance in Indonesia reveal challenges at the Wildlife Interface.

A lacuna of information exists on how to build a One Health system that integrates human, animal and environmental health for the early detection and prevention of emerging infectious diseases. This study aimed to identify and articulate perceptions of practitioners and government stakeholders regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia within a One Health framework. Key findings highlight the ability of local governments to rally stakeholders and form a progressive evidence-based response. While civil society's role is often overlooked, with appropriate government facilitation, it can serve …

Fortifying essential medicines supply chains in Sub-Saharan Africa - the curious cases of Kenya and Uganda.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is the cornerstone of global health policy. Sustainable Development Goal 3.8 ensures access to safe, effective, quality and affordable medicines and vaccines. Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries continue to face persistent challenges in achieving and maintaining essential medicines supply. National Medicines Policies (NMPs) that strengthen access to essential medicines are critical for UHC. In this scoping review, we take stock of the literature on essential medicines supply chains in SSA and analyze the unique, related provisions in the Kenyan and Ugandan NMPs,

Availability of secondary healthcare data for conducting pharmacoepidemiology studies in Colombia: A systematic review.

Real-world evidence (RWE) is emerging as a fundamental component of the post-marketing evaluation of medicinal products. Even though the focus on RWE studies has increased in Colombia, the availability of secondary data sources to perform this type of research is not well documented. Thus, we aimed at identifying and characterizing secondary data sources available in Colombia. We performed a systematic literature review on PubMed, EMBASE, and VHL using a combination of controlled vocabulary and keywords for the concepts of electronic health records, epidemiologic studies and Colombia. A total

Comparative strategic approaches to COVID-19 in Africa: Balancing public interest with civil liberties.

As COVID-19 spreads rapidly across Africa, causing havoc to economies and disruption to already fragile healthcare systems, it is becoming clear that despite standardised global health strategies, national and local government responses must be tailored to their individual settings. Some African countries have adopted stringent measures such as national lockdown, quarantine or isolation, in combination with good hand hygiene, mandatory wearing of masks and physical distancing, to prevent an impending healthcare crisis. The impact of stringent measures in low- to middle-income African countries…

Tunneling of Elastic Waves in a Tapered Waveguide.

Understanding how evanescent modes mediate energy transfer in tapered elastic waveguides is of paramount interest, as it unlocks new strategies for wave control and manipulation. Evanescent modes play a crucial role in energy localization and in the emergence of thickness resonances. We report the first unambiguous experimental evidence of Lamb mode tunneling near turning points, revealing how energy can traverse an evanescent barrier and recover its propagative nature after a finite transit time. Focusing on waveguides with linearly varying thickness, we show that the S_{2} mode becomes evane

A qualitative study of governance predicament on dengue prevention and control in Malaysia: the elite experience.

BACKGROUND: The challenges faced by healthcare personnel in relation to dengue prevention and control are perennial but noticeably unexplored. It is often difficult to translate policies and decision making by the elite into astute management in consonance with the needs of rank-and-file personnel. In this study, we assess the impact of governance on dengue prevention and control activities in Malaysia as narrated by the elite. METHODS: A qualitative study using a case-study approach was conducted between January 2019 and November 2019 in the districts of Gombak and Klang, where the relevant

Investigating tree planting in Ethiopia and the extent to which scheme implementation aligns with good governance practices.

Tree planting schemes are implemented to achieve social, cultural, economic, and environmental goals. Various frameworks and guidelines outline good governance practices to aid the achievement of these goals. However, there is rarely sufficient monitoring and reporting of tree planting schemes for it to be possible to determine whether schemes adhere to good governance practices. Here, we assessed the performance of 16 tree planting schemes in Ethiopia using focus group discussions with local communities, interviews with scheme managers and beneficiaries, remote sensing, and reviewing official

Kidney transplantation in Africa-workforce, capabilities and perceived barriers.

BACKGROUND: Access to kidney transplantation (KT) in Africa is reported to be limited. Lack of registry data and reliance on single-centre reports limits an accurate overview of KT on the continent. We therefore undertook a survey of all African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN)-affiliated nephrologists to describe KT practices and challenges on the continent. METHODS: Voluntary participants (n = 317) were recruited from AFRAN social media platforms using snowball sampling. Participants completed an anonymized survey detailing KT practices and barriers using a Likert scale. Training and pract
