Numerous studies have suggested that magnesium ion (Mg(2+)) plays an important role in pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, ischemic heart disease. Hypomagnesemia is often associated with the imbalance of sodium, potassium, and calcium ions. Magnesium deficiency can occur frequently in alcoholics, and in patients with hypertension, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction. Magnesium deficiency induces an increase in intracellular Ca(2+) concentration in cardiac myocytes, formation of reactive oxygen species, production of inflammatory cytokines, leading to the…

Magnesium, beyond any doubt, plays an important role in metabolism. Alterations of magnesium levels have an impact on many organs and systems, especially during aging. We had 156 participants aged 60-93 years (average 74.7 years) in our survey. Of them, 49 were men and 107 were women. Treatment with loop diuretics (Furosemid and Bumetanide) and magnesium levels was correlated, as well as the influence of magnesium levels on life span. Serum magnesium levels were measured in patients receiving diuretics and in the control group. Also, magnesium levels were measured in patients who passed away i…

PURPOSE: The physiological role and metabolism of magnesium, the causes of magnesium deficiency, clinical data on the benefits of magnesium supplementation, and the management of magnesium deficiency are discussed.
SUMMARY: Magnesium is an often overlooked electrolyte that is essential to life. Magnesium plays a role in more than 300 enzymatic reactions and is critically involved in energy metabolism, glucose utilization, protein synthesis, fatty acid synthesis and breakdown, ATPase functions, and virtually all hormonal reactions. Magnesium is closely involved in maintaining cellular ionic ba…

The experience of our self-help organisation shows that the reason patients with symptoms of magnesium (Mg) deficiency do not get Mg therapy is acceptance of an inappropriate lower limit of the reference values for serum Mg concentration. The commonly designated low limit of the normal range seems to have been selected from values obtained for symptomatic patients. It is below levels that exist in patients with marginal deficiencies that can predispose to development of pathologic findings, so that the prevalence and importance of this disease is insufficiently considered. The lower reference …

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to evaluate usage possibilities of magnesium sulfate in anesthesiology.
METHODOLOGY: In Clinic of Cardiac Surgery, Kaunas University of Medicine magnesium sulfate was started for use as an adjuvant to anesthetics. For anesthesia it was used in 20 cases. This review article presents the methodology based on which the magnesium sulfate anesthesia was given. Methodology was created using the data of international clinical trials. After anesthesia induction with thiopental (5 mg/kg) and fentanyl (2 mg/kg), patients were given shock-dose injection (30-50…

In cellular systems, magnesium is the second most abundant element and is involved in basically all metabolic pathways. At physiologically relevant concentrations, magnesium itself is not genotoxic, but is highly required to maintain genomic stability. Besides its stabilizing effect on DNA and chromatin structure, magnesium is an essential cofactor in almost all enzymatic systems involved in DNA processing. Most obvious in studies on DNA replication, its function is not only charge-related, but very specific with respect to the high fidelity of DNA synthesis. Furthermore, as essential cofactor…

The interrelationships of magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) homeostasis are reviewed. Evidence from clinical and experimental studies including whole animal and cell culture experiments indicate that (1) homeostasis of Mg and K are closely related in the whole organism, (2) deficiencies of Mg and K frequently co-exist with gastrointestinal and especially renal losses from diuretic and nephrotoxic drug treatment being mainly responsible, and (3) Mg is required for maintenance of normal cellular K. Evidence from many laboratories indicate that Mg has direct effects at a cellular level on K transp…

In the first part of the paper the Authors give an up-to-date analysis of our current knowledge of magnesium metabolism, its relation with other electrolytes (namely sodium, potassium, calcium) and clinical symptoms due to its deficiency. The Authors then focus their attention on the relations between magnesium and cardiovascular pathologies and underline the role which magnesium deficiency may play in the onset of various forms of coronary artery disease: preinfarction angina, myocardial infarction, threatening ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death.

Magnesium and phosphorus normally are present in very low serum concentrations and usually are not included in common serum electrolyte laboratory studies. Though their normal serum concentrations are relatively low, both of these ionized minerals are necessary for many critical physiologic functions, and decreases in normal serum levels can have serious deleterious effects. Some of these effects, especially in myocardial tissues, may lead to permanent tissue damage. Hospitalized patients at greatest risk for developing hypomagnesemia or hypophosphatemia are trauma victims; individuals with po…

The magnesium ion, which is a bivalent cation and is necessary for life, is a co-factor in more than 300 enzyme reactions. It has an action on uterine myometrium causing it to relax by stimulating B2 adrenergic receptors and cyclical AMP. It competes with the calcium ion which brings about inhibition of myosine kinase, and therefore a drop in phosphorylated myosine. Deficiency of magnesium is one explanation for uterine overactivity; because it is difficult to estimate how important it is in certain premature labours because this is caused often by many factors, and the levels of plasma magnes…

Although relatively common, aberrations in divalent cation homeostasis may be overlooked in Emergency Department patients. The intracellular … ntify patients at risk for abnormal calcium homeostasis, and to intervene in an appropriate manner. Magnesium is an essential cofactor in a host of important biochemical reactions. Magnesium deficiency is fairly common in certain groups of patients and can cause serious complications. The diagnosis is often difficult to make in the Emergency Department sett …

During the last decades the kidney has emerged as a key organ in the homeostasis of magnesium and disturbances of magnesium metabolism have been described in several renal diseases. Restoring body stores to normal levels should be one of the goals in the conservative treatment of end stage renal failure, since magnesium retention is thought to participate in uraemic toxicity. The kidney is also the target organ of many drugs and increased magnesium excretion can be observed either as an obligatory side effect or as a sign of nephrotoxicity. Magnesium depletion could participate in the vascular…
