Wolf's isotopic response: rosacea appearing at the site of healed herpes zoster.

A 40-year-old man developed an erythematous rash on the right side of his face 3 weeks after a herpes zoster infection at the same location. Examination revealed an erythematous papular eruption and telangiectasias along the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the right trigeminal nerve, exactly at the site of the consistent with previous herpes zoster infection, Wolf's isotopic response. Histological examination showed vascular ectatic dilatation and perivascular and perifollicular infiltration of lymphocytes and histiocytes consistent with rosacea. The rash was resistant to oral doxycyclin

Endoscope-assisted contralateral transmaxillary approach to the clivus and the hypoglossal canal: technical case report.

Clival lesions are still considered surgically complex due to their anatomical location. Critical structures, such as the internal carotid arteries (ICAs), cavernous sinuses, cranial nerves, and brainstem, may be encased within the lesion. Although advances in endoscopic endonasal approaches have provided new routes to these lesions, exposure and resection of clival tumors through the endonasal route remain a technical challenge. Here, the authors report a left-sided endoscopic transmaxillary approach to access the right aspect of the clivus and the hypoglossal canal.A 35-year-old woman presen

Transmaxillosphenoidal approach to tumors invading the medial compartment of the cavernous sinus.

A transmaxillosphenoidal approach was used to remove sellar tumors invading the cavernous sinus. This procedure, a widening of the standard transsphenoidal approach to the sella turcica, uses the sublabial or transnasal route in which the medial wall of the maxillary sinus is laterally dislocated. This method provides good exposure of the prominences of bone above the carotid artery which lies on the posterolateral wall of the sphenoid sinus. This bone area is the key to opening the cavernous sinus inferomedially and removing lesions within its medial compartment. The inferomedial approach tak

Effect of experimental tooth movement on nerve fibres immunoreactive to calcitonin gene-related peptide, protein gene product 9.5, and blood vessel density and distribution in rats.

The effect of experimental tooth movement on nerve fibers immunoreactive to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and to protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 were studied, as well as the coincidence of these responses with changes in blood vessel density and distribution in the periodontal ligament (PDL) and pulp of young Wistar rats. The first right maxillary molar was moved mesially by an orthodontic appliance for 3, 7, 14 and 21 days. Sagittal and horizontal serial sections were incubated alternately with antibodies to CGRP, PGP 9.5 and laminin. Nerve and blood vessel density and distribution be

Ipsilateral, isolated amaurosis after inferior alveolar nerve block: report of two rare cases.

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetics are utilized all over the world for performing painless dental procedures. Usually, the administration of local anesthetic is an uncomplicated process that passes off uneventfully. Complications, when seen, are not usually serious. However, blindness is an alarming complication both for the patient and for the dentist. Amaurosis can occur with both maxillary and mandibular nerve blocks. Amaurosis is usually associated with other ocular complications like ptosis, diplopia, and periorbital blanching. CASE REPORT: We report two rare cases of transient isolated amaur

Computed Tomography Cisternography for Evaluation of Trigeminal Neuralgia When Magnetic Resonance Imaging Is Contraindicated: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TGN) causes severe unilateral facial pain. The etiology is hypothesized to be segmental demyelination of the trigeminal nerve root via compression by the superior cerebellar artery (SCA). Microvascular decompression (MVD) allows immediate and long-term pain relief. Preoperative evaluation includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or magnetic resonance angiography of the brain. Having a pacemaker is a contraindication for MRI. There have been isolated reports of using computed tomography (CT) cisternography scans for radiation planning for TGN. CASE DESCRI

Trigeminal nerve agenesis with absence of foramina rotunda in Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome.

Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome (GLHS) is a clinical condition traditionally characterized by rhombencephalosynapsis (RS), parieto-occipital alopecia, and trigeminal anesthesia. It is a neurocutaneous disorder with no known etiology. The underlying cause of the trigeminal anesthesia in GLHS has not been examined or reported; it has merely been identified on clinical grounds. In this report, a 10-month-old white female born at 37 weeks gestational age with GLHS underwent a contrast-enhanced CT for the evaluation of craniofacial dysmorphic features. Thin-section bone algorithm images showed absen

Ectopic Tooth in Mandibular Canal, Maxillary Sinus, and Mandibular Condyle.

Eruption of tooth into place other than tooth-bearing region is defined as ectopic eruption. Although ectopic eruption of tooth is rare, there have been cases in the maxillary sinus, mandibular condyle, nasal cavity, chin, palate, and orbital floor. Due to ectopic teeth's rarity and lack of consensus for ıts treatment, incidence was entitled to be added to literature and discussed. It was reported that odontogenic tumors and cysts can develop around the ectopic tooth. Thus, ectopic teeth can be followed up regularly in case of no signs and symptoms. If the patient has unusual orofacial pain, u

Endocranial morphology of the Brazilian Permian dicynodont Rastodon procurvidens (Therapsida: Anomodontia).

Dicynodontia is a major clade of terrestrial tetrapods that greatly diversified during the Permian and Triassic periods, reaching a worldwide distribution. In this study, the endocranial cavity of the Brazilian Permian dicynodont Rastodon procurvidens is described based on a digital endocast obtained using digital imaging (X-ray computed tomography) and 3D modeling. It was possible to reconstruct the brain, olfactory bulbs, inner ear, some neurovascular canals, cranial nerves, the nasal cavity, and the maxillary recesses. The endocast of R. procurvidens preserves a typical plesiomorphic morpho

Melanotic schwannoma arising in association with nevus of Ota: 2 cases suggesting a shared mechanism.

Melanotic schwannoma is a rare markedly pigmented peripheral nerve sheath tumor comprising cells with prominent melanization and schwannian features. The psammomatous variety is associated with Carney complex, a multiple neoplasia syndrome with spotty skin pigmentation. We present the first 2 reported cases of melanotic schwannoma arising in patients with a history of nevus of Ota, a rare dermal melanosis believed to represent a failure of melanocyte migration to the epidermis during embryogenesis. Case 1 involves a 40-year-old woman with a 1.8-cm, deeply pigmented, trigeminal nerve mass and p

Bioimpedance Sensing Surgical Drill - In Vivo Porcine Model.

Surgical drilling to place dental implants in the mandible and maxilla is associated high risk of iatrogenic injuries to inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary sinus. Real-time tissue margin sensing at the drill-tip using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) could reduce this risk by providing feedback to surgeons. Studies with saline analogues, ex-vivo tissues, in-situ tissues and computer models have been previously conducted to evaluate these impedance sensors. Understanding in-vivo electrical properties of tissues in the mandible and maxilla is critical to further develop the sensor and

Pembrolizumab-associated Neuronopathy with Improved Lower Limb Somatosensory Evoked Potential After Intravenous Methylprednisolone Treatment.

Cases of neuronopathy associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have rarely been reported. We herein report a case of ICI-associated neuronopathy. A 54-year-old man underwent chemotherapy for right maxillary sinus cancer. Two months after pembrolizumab treatment, diarrhea, worsening of abnormal sensations, and severe ataxia of the lower limbs were observed. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) with tibial nerve stimulation showed disappearance of the N21 waveform. A colonic biopsy suggested ICI-associated colitis. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with ICI-associat
