Papillary endothelial hyperplasia (Masson's tumour) of the maxillary sinus.

In 1923, Masson described a neoplastic process consisting of papillary hyperplasia of the endothelial cells, with a consequent obliteration of the vascular lumen, followed later by degenerative changes. Masson coined the term vegetant intravascular haemangioendothelioma, however, these days it is more commonly known as papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH), or by the pseudonym, Masson's tumour. Although relatively rare, there are numerous accounts of PEH in the literature, describing its predilection for the head and neck region. Our case report describes the finding of a PEH within the para

Ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinus. Case report.

Ectopic eruption of teeth can occur in a wide variety of sites. These include the mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. While this process is unusual, the detection of a third molar in the maxillary antrum is extremely rare. A case is presented of ectopic eruption of a third molar in the left maxillary sinus of a 35-year-old caucasian male giving rise to local morbidity.

Accuracy of a Cascade Network for Semi-Supervised Maxillary Sinus Detection and Sinus Cyst Classification.

OBJECTIVE: Maxillary sinus mucosal cysts represent prevalent oral and maxillofacial diseases, and their precise diagnosis is essential for surgical planning in maxillary sinus floor elevation. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based pipeline for the classification of maxillary sinus lesions in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to provide auxiliary support for clinical diagnosis. METHODS: This study utilized 45 136 maxillary sinus images from CBCT scans of 541 patients. A cascade network was designed, comprising a semi-supervised maxillary sinus area object detection module…

Prevalence of maxillary sinus septa and its impact on sinus augmentation procedures for implant placement.

The prevalence, classification and clinical significance of sinus septa and their impact on surgical procedures is of interest. A cross-sectional study involving 30 patients assessed maxillary sinus septa using CBCT imaging. Septa were classified into primary and secondary types and surgical difficulty, membrane perforation and implant success were recorded. Sinus septa are prevalent and significantly affect the difficulty of sinus augmentation and the risk of membrane perforation. Preoperative CBCT evaluation and careful planning are critical for successful outcomes.

Endoscopic sinus surgery for dental implant displacement into the maxillary sinus-a retrospective clinical study.

The aims of this retrospective clinical study were to present our management protocol for the retrieval of impacted dental implants that have become displaced into the maxillary sinus cavity and to define the role of endoscopic sinus surgery in this setting. All 24 patients (25 implants) who underwent surgical retrieval of dental implants displaced into the maxillary sinus between 2012 and 2019 were included. Data on surgical interventions and complications were collected retrospectively. Eleven patients (46%) had chronic sinusitis associated with the migrated implant. All implants were succes…

Preoperative evaluation of the maxillary sinus roof as a guide for posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus roof has long been regarded as a reliable reference point for both endoscopic and skull base surgery. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the maxillary sinus roof as a preoperative guide for posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinus surgery. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional observational study of 50 randomly selected computed tomographic (CT) sinus scans from patients previously seen at a tertiary rhinology clinic. Each side of the sinuses was treated independently, giving a total of 100 sides for analysis. Using the medial maxillary sinus roof as a fi…

Maxillary sinus infundibulum narrowing influences sinus abnormalities in spite of the presence or absence of allergy.

CONCLUSION: Maxillary sinus abnormalities were demonstrated to be associated with maxillary sinus infundibulum narrowing as well as nasal airflow resistance secondary to nonspecific nasal inflammation. OBJECTIVES: There is no consensus regarding the pathogenetic roles of allergy and anatomic variations in sinus mucosa abnormalities. We investigated the correlation between allergy and anatomic variations in sinus abnormalities in chronic rhinitis patients in the presence or absence of allergy. METHODS: In all, 148 adult patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) were…

Ectopic Olfactory Neuroblastoma of the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor typically arising from the superior nasal cavity, and primary occurrence in the maxillary sinus is exceptionally uncommon, often leading to diagnostic confusion with other sinonasal malignancies. A 34-year-old man presented with bilateral nasal obstruction, recurrent epistaxis, and frontal headache, and imaging revealed a right maxillary sinus mass. Initial endoscopic biopsy suggested a differentiated neuroendocrine tumor, but whole-body octreotide scintigraphy was negative. The patient underwent endoscopic endonasal medial maxillectomy wi…

Cavernous hemangioma: a rare case report in the maxillary sinus.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cavernous hemangiomas are rare vascular malformations of the maxillary sinus that present diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents a 52-year-old woman with a slowly enlarging, painless swelling over the right infra-nasal region, leading to gross facial deformation. Imaging studies revealed a large, diffuse radiopaque mass in the upper right posterior maxilla, with a differential diagnosis favoring fibrous dysplasia. The patient underwent surgical excision via hemimaxillectomy under general anesthesia. Histopathological exam…

Influence of Orthodontic Treatment on Changes in the Maxillary Sinus Dimensions.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the correlation of craniofacial morphology with maxillary sinus morphology and to evaluate whether orthodontic treatment facilitates maxillary sinus enlargement in adults. Materials and methods A total of 45 adult women underwent cephalography and computed tomography before and after orthodontic treatment. All participants were classified into three groups: skeletal class I, II, and III. The average dimensions and volume of the maxillary sinus were calculated in each subgroup. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the correlatio…

Removal of Calcium Hydroxide Paste Leaked Into the Maxillary Sinus.

Calcium hydroxide is a widely used endodontic medicament with antibacterial activity. When excessive pressure is applied during injection of calcium hydroxide paste or apical perforation occurs, calcium hydroxide can leak into the maxillary sinus and is adsorbed onto the sinus membrane. Although a leakage of calcium hydroxide may not usually cause clinical symptoms, when a large amount of leakage occurs, it can cause degeneration of adjacent tissue and functional disorder, requiring immediate surgical removal. However, due to adsorption to the sinus membrane, calcium hydroxide leaked into the …

A Rare Case of Giant Cavernous Hemangioma of the Maxillary Sinus.

BACKGROUND Hemangiomas are commonly located in the head and neck and rarely in the paranasal sinuses. These are benign vascular lesions, but with an increased risk of bleeding. The surgical approach must have detailed prior planning, given the increased risk of intraoperative bleeding. We herein describe the case of a 32-year-old male patient with recurrent epistaxis, nasal obstruction, and facial deformity due to a giant cavernous hemangioma successfully treated by endoscopic sinus surgery. CASE REPORT A 32-year-old man had nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis for 2 months. Physical e
