Sporotrichosis of Maxillary Sinuses in a Middle Aged Female Patient from Rural Area of Eastern India.

Sporotrichosis is commonly a chronic infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii, a saprophytic fungus and is usually limited to cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues. Disseminated systemic, osteoarticular or pulmonary sporotrichosis have been reported but nasal sinusitis by this fungus is extremely infrequent. Earlier report from southern India documented a case of maxillary sinusitis by Sporothrix schenckii. Here we report a similar case of bilateral maxillary sinusitis in a middle aged female from a village of Bihar, a state in eastern India. She underwent endoscopic maxillary sinus surgery for n…

Human maxillary sinuses augmented with mineralized, solvent-dehydrated bone allograft: a longitudinal case series.

BACKGROUND: This prospective case series aimed to assess the clinical stability of maxillary sinus floors regenerated with mineralized, solvent-dehydrated bone allograft (MSDBA) and restored with dental implants after at least 5 years of function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven sinuses in 7 patients (4 bilateral) were augmented with 50% cortical and 50% cancellous MSDBA (Puros, Zimmer Dental Italy srl, Vittorio Veneto, Treviso, Italy). After a mean healing period of 8.1 months, a total of 11 bone specimens (1 per sinus graft) were retrieved and 25 implants were placed. Bone samples were analyz

A balloon dilatation technique for the treatment of intramaxillary lesions using a Foley catheter in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: In chronic maxillary sinusitis, pathologic mucosas of the anterior and lateral walls of the maxillary sinus are difficult to remove. Trocar insertion to the canine fossa is the most commonly used procedure. In the present work, we report a method involving a balloon dilatation technique for treatment of intramaxillary lesions using a Foley catheter in chronic maxillary sinusitis and the outcomes of this approach. METHODS: Records of 34 patients with intramaxillary sinus lesions who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were analyzed. After widening the natural ostium, a 10F Foley cat…

Maxillary sinusitis caused by the migration of a silastic implant used for an orbital floor reconstruction: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: The authors report on a patient whose unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis was caused by the migration of a silastic implant used for orbital floor repair. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old woman presented with a three-year history of right-sided maxillary discomfort that was associated with a purulent discharge. Her medical history included chronic allergic rhinitis and the placement of a silastic implant after a right orbital floor fracture at the age of 14. The silastic implant was then removed endoscopically in a right maxillary sinus meatotomy. The symptoms improved within three we…

Dentigerous cyst associated with a displaced tooth in the maxillary sinus: an unusual cause of recurrent sinusitis in an adolescent.

We report an unusual case of a displaced maxillary molar and associated dentigerous cyst within the maxillary sinus in an adolescent presenting as recurrent sinusitis. Although a rare cause of sinusitis in children, dentigerous cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis for causes of persistent or recurrent sinusitis in this age group. This report provides further evidence for obtaining imaging studies when managing pediatric sinusitis that does not respond to standard antibiotic therapy. We discuss management options for these lesions including the differential diagnoses and need

Maxillary sinusitis today: a consequence of dental and nasal disease. A case presenting with a difficult differential diagnosis.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis as an expression of infectious dental disease seemed destined to vanish. On the contrary, during the last years, the frequency of chronic maxillary sinusitis is rising again in relation to several factors, among these bacterial resistance as well as the poor dental hygiene and the limited access to odontologic care by not well-off patients play a key role. Anyway oral rehabilitative surgery (pre-implantologic and implantologic) is nowadays becoming the major cause of chronic maxillary sinusitis. The authors describe a recently observed case that, for its peculiarity…

[Antioxidant enzymatic activity in blood of patients with chronic hypertrophy of the maxillary sinuses and larynx and the carcinoma of the larynx].

The aim of the work was the examinations of antioxidant enzymatic activity in blood of patients with chronic hypertrophic of maxillary sinusitis (15 patients) and laryngitis (10 patients), and carcinoma of larynx (7 patients) in comparison with healthy persons (15). The enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase in blood (method of Misra and Fridovich), katalase (method of Beers and Sizer) and malonyl dialdehyde (method of Placer) were evaluated. The obtained results pointed at significant reduction of antioxidant enzymatic activity against the oxygen species generation in blood of patients wi…

Microbiology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in adults: isolated aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and their susceptibility to twenty antibiotics.

In a comparative study on the efficacy of two surgical treatment procedures, 90 patients diagnosed with chronic maxillary sinusitis received antimicrobial prophylaxis. Maxillary sinus fluid samples were taken from these 90 patients before the initiation of antimicrobial prophylaxis, and were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. In 81% of all samples, bacterial growth was present. Anaerobic bacteria were present in 29% of the cases (5% pure anaerobic and 24% mixed aerobic and anaerobic). Predominant aerobic bacteria were staphylococci, in 42% of all samples (mainly coagulase-negative), …

Surgically treated chronic maxillary sinusitis: Does the odontogenic etiology alone or in combination with a fungus ball matter?

PURPOSE: To determine whether odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, either alone (OMSw/oFB) or in combination with fungus ball (OMSwFB), is associated with specific clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes compared to non-odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients who underwent surgical treatment for chronic maxillary sinusitis between 2013 and 2021. OMSw/oFB and OMSwFB patients, were selected as the study group, while patients diagnosed with non-odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (non-OMS) were enrolled as the control group. …

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis After Surgery for Mid-Facial Fracture: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Posttraumatic chronic maxillary sinusitis deleteriously affects the life quality of patients with recurrent episodes and related discomfort. However, few studies have been performed to investigate the prevalence of chronic maxillary sinusitis after surgery of mid-facial fracture and related risk factors. The early prevention and cure of posttraumatic chronic maxillary sinusitis have received little attention. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of chronic maxillary sinusitis after surgery for mid-facial fracture and to identify related risk factors. The authors retrospectively colle…

Maxillary sinusitis of dental origin due to oroantral fistula, treated by endoscopic sinus surgery and primary fistula closure.

AIM: To present the current treatment approach for oroantral fistula causing maxillary sinusitis. DESIGN: Case series. Four cases of oroantral fistula (diameters: 6, 9, 11 and 13 mm) due to chronic maxillary sinusitis were treated by excision of all diseased oroantral fistula tissue, followed by endoscopic creation of a large middle antrostomy and closure of the fistula using buccal flaps. A synthetic surgical glue and local alveolar bone were used. RESULTS: Patients were followed up for six months to three years; all were considered cured. CONCLUSION: Most surgeons use buccal or palatal fl…

Prevalence of etiologic bacteria and beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis at Phramongkutklao Hospital.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is an increasing trend of prescribing antibiotics that cover beta-lactamase-producing bacteria as the first line drug for sinusitis patients in Thailand This practice dose not only increases the treatment cost but might also induce resistance to antimicrobial agents. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of the pathogenic bacteria in acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis as well as the prevalence of beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The maxillary aspiration fluid specimens of 52 acute and chronic sinusitis patients at Phramongkutklao Hospital…

Isolated chronic maxillary sinusitis of non-dental origin does not correlate per se with ipsilateral intranasal structural abnormalities.

A case series of 35 patients with isolated chronic maxillary sinusitis of inflammatory non-dental origin was retrospectively reviewed to determine the correlation of ipsilateral intranasal structural abnormalities. The records were examined for computed tomographic, nasal endoscopic, and intraoperative findings. The incidence of ipsilateral and contralateral intranasal structural abnormalities at the ostiomeatal complex region, including conchae bullosae, Haller cells, paradoxical middle turbinates, and septal deviations, was determined. Nineteen of 35 patients (54%) had ipsilateral abnormalit…
