X-linked CHARGE-like Abruzzo-Erickson syndrome and classic cleft palate with ankyloglossia result from TBX22 splicing mutations.

X-linked cleft palate (CPX) is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the TBX22 transcription factor and is known to exhibit phenotypic variability, usually involving either a complete, partial or submucous cleft palate, with or without ankyloglossia. This study hypothesized a possible involvement of TBX22 in a family with X-linked, CHARGE-like Abruzzo-Erickson syndrome, of unknown etiology. The phenotype extends to additional features including sensorineural deafness and coloboma, which are suggested by the Tbx22 developmental expression pattern but not previously associated in CPX patients

Combined push-pull distraction for correction of syndromic midfacial hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: Gradual midfacial advancement, applying the principle of distraction osteogenesis, reduces the restriction of the soft tissues and results in bony consolidation without need for grafting. The midface can be distracted by either pushing it forward, using semiburied devices, or pulling it forward by a rigid external device. For each method there are inherent technical problems, such as controlling the vector of movement, symmetry of advancement, and differential movement of the upper/lower face. We have used a combination of the 2 methods, called "push-pull," in an effort to control the

Pharyngeal airway space changes after counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of double-jaw surgery with counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex on the pharyngeal airway space and velopharyngeal anatomy in patients with high occlusal plane facial morphology. Fifty patients (22 men, 28 women) with high occlusal plane facial morphology underwent double-jaw surgery with counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1, 30 patients (8 men, 22 women) who underwent maxillary and mandibular advancement and group 2, 20 patients (14 men, 6 women) w

Deficiency of the cytoskeletal protein SPECC1L leads to oblique facial clefting.

Genetic mutations responsible for oblique facial clefts (ObFC), a unique class of facial malformations, are largely unknown. We show that loss-of-function mutations in SPECC1L are pathogenic for this human developmental disorder and that SPECC1L is a critical organizer of vertebrate facial morphogenesis. During murine embryogenesis, Specc1l is expressed in cell populations of the developing facial primordial, which proliferate and fuse to form the face. In zebrafish, knockdown of a SPECC1L homolog produces a faceless phenotype with loss of jaw and facial structures, and knockdown in Drosophila

Macrophage is crucial for tongue development by regulating myogenesis and vascularization.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal tongue development is a craniofacial deformity that affects dental-maxillofacial esthetics and function. Recent evidence has identified macrophages as multi-functional immune cells crucial for heart and brain development. However, it is still unknown whether macrophages affect tongue development. Therefore, this study aims to assess the distribution, phenotype, and roles of macrophages in the developing tongue. METHODS: In this study, immunohistochemical (IHC) and multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) staining were conducted on C57BL/6 mice at embryonic day (E) 13.5, E14.5,

A rare case of Glomus Tumor of the Thenar Eminence of the Hand Misdiagnosed as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Pycnodysostosis is a rare genetic disease characterized by osteosclerosis and bone fragility. The clinical aspects are varied including short stature, acro-osteolysis of distal phalanges, and dysplasia of the clavicles. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations of this disease are very clear. The head is usually large, a beaked nose, obtuse mandibular angle, and both maxilla and mandible are hypoplastic. Dental abnormalities are common. We report a case with the typical clinical and radiological characteristics of the Pycnodysostosis associated with a conductive hearing loss, an asso

Oral-nasal-ocular cleft: the greatest challenge among the rare clefts.

INTRODUCTION: Number 3 cleft or oral-nasal-ocular cleft is a well-known entity that was described by Morian over a century ago. This malformation is a paranasal-medial orbitomaxillary cleft running across the lacrimal segment of the lower eyelid and over the lacrimal groove. The Tessier number 3 naso-ocular cleft represents one of the most difficult and challenging malformations to correct for the reconstructive surgeon. We have conducted a retrospective analysis of our series consisting of 21 cases. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to review the functional outcome and aesthetic results of the di

Correlation between Wilkes staging and arthroscopic findings in TMJ internal derangements: A 20-year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: The Wilkes classification is widely used to guide diagnosis and surgical decision-making in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangements. However, its ability to predict true intra-articular pathology remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agreement between the Wilkes clinical-radiologic classification and the Bronstein-Merrill arthroscopic staging system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted using the TMJ arthroscopy database of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid

Congenital Cervical Bronchogenic Cyst: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies of the embryonic foregut. They are caused by abnormal budding of diverticulum of the embryonic foregut between the 26th and 40th day of gestation. Bronchogenic cysts can appear in the mediastinum and pulmonary parenchyma, or at ectopic sites (neck, subcutaneous tissue or abdomen). So far, 70 cases of cervical localization of bronchogenic cysts have been reported. Majority of bronchogenic cysts have been diagnosed in the pediatric population. Bronchogenic cysts of the cervical area are generally asymptomatic and symptoms may occur i

Facial asymmetry in subjects with skeletal Class III deformity.

We investigated the frequency, site, amount, and direction of facial asymmetry in human adults with mandibular prognathism and examined if these characteristics were associated postnatally with cardinal clinical signs that may indicate a predisposition to facial asymmetry. Two hundred twenty young Japanese adults (69 men and 151 women) who exhibited skeletal Class III malocclusions were selected. The sample was divided into a Postnatal Factor Group and a Nonpostnatal Factor Group. The former group included those who had: (1) received orthodontic treatment using a chin cap; (2) exhibited clinic
