Establishment of an Animal Model of Dog Bite Injuries.

Nowadays dog bite is becoming a world public health problem. Therefore, the study aimed to develop a dog bite animal model that is helpful to solve these problems. In this study, the skull of an adult dog was scanned. The three-dimensional model of the dog maxillofacial bones and dentition was built by MIMICS. Next, the model was printed with Co-Cr alloy by using selective laser sintering technology to develop the dog bite simulation pliers. Then, to simulate dog bite to most, the maximum bite force of the pliers was measured and actions contained in dog bite process was analyzed. Afterwards,

Epistaxis: diagnosis and treatment.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are called on to evaluate and treat various emergencies, including acute epistaxis. Epistaxis is relatively benign in nature, but it can produce a serious, life-threatening situation. It has been estimated that up to 60% of the population has had at least 1 episode of epistaxis throughout their lifetime. Of this group, 6% seek medical care to treat epistaxis, with 1.6 in 10,000 requiring hospitalization. With fewer and fewer otorhinolaryngologists participating on hospital call schedules, it is critical for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to be familiar with

Adopting a Trauma-Informed Framework in Clinical Practice.

Trauma, including both historical adversity and acute injury, is highly prevalent in the general population. Over 50% of adults report adverse childhood experiences, and surgical patients frequently present with unaddressed psychological distress, which is significantly compounded by maxillofacial injuries and the potentially triggering nature of the care environment. Standard biomedical training typically lacks the necessary competencies for diagnosing, preventing, and managing these complex psychosocial needs. This review proposes and details a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for int…

Custom Ocular Prosthesis With Intraoral Obturator for Orbital and Intraoral Defects Resulting From Mucormycosis: A Technical Case Report.

Orbital defects can result from a myriad of underlying diseases and injuries. Treatment of malignant neoplasms and maxillofacial trauma are common reasons for orbital exenteration. Recently, a growing number of cases of orbital defects have been reported due to mucormycosis in patients with COVID-19. In this report, we describe a technique to achieve ideal iris orientation in the fabrication of a silicone orbital prosthesis using custom-made eyeglasses as a jig. This method allows for easy orientation and reorientation, enabling precise iris alignment and enhancing the aesthetic outcome.

Benjamin William Fickling CBE (1909-2007), oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

Ben Fickling was a dentist and doctor who played a major part in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialised discipline. He designed several surgical instruments, published (with William Warwick James) Injuries of the jaws and face and translated Le Fort's work into English, both in wartime. He was a founder member of the British and International Associations of Oral Surgeons. Fickling planned and inaugurated the Royal College of Surgeons of England's first higher examination in general dental surgery and he was Dean of its Faculty of Dental Surgery from 1968-1971.

Management of Ear Trauma.

Facial trauma remains a common reason for visits to the emergency department or urgent care facility. The ear remains susceptible to trauma given its delicate anatomy and position in the maxillofacial region. Understanding the anatomy and recognizing the circumstances regarding the mechanism of injury help dictate treatment. The goals of treatment should remain to restore the physiologic form and function of the ear. Middle ear injuries should also be addressed during the process. Although primary repair remains feasible in most cases, there are instances when delayed and staged reconstruction

An aesthetic approach in the repair of anterior frontal sinus fractures.

The management of upper facial trauma is a common responsibility of surgeons taking care of maxillofacial injuries. Historically, the most commonly used surgical approach has been the bi-temporal (coronal) incision. As is well known, the coronal incision carries some inherent complications such as hair loss, long scars, and increased length of hospital stay. The purpose of this article is to describe an aesthetic approach, similar to an endoscopic brow lift, for the repair of anterior wall fractures of the frontal sinus without the need for long incisions or fixation devices.

Reoperative mandibular trauma: management of posttraumatic mandibular deformities.

Mandibular fractures are one the most common maxillofacial injuries. Diagnostic errors, poor surgical technique, healing disorders, or complications may lead to the establishment of posttraumatic mandibular deformities. Nonunion, malunion/malocclusion, or facial asymmetry can be found early during the healing process or as long-term sequelae after the initial mandibular fracture repair. Although occasionally these problems can be solved in a nonsurgical manner, reoperations play an important role in the management of these untoward outcomes. This article discusses the reoperative techniques us…
