The relationship between social media addiction and metacognitions in patients with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems including depression, eating disorders and anxiety disorders are associated with extensive social media use. The literature has examined the relationship between social anxiety and social media addiction; however, there is a lack of studies conducted in clinical patient populations. This study aimed to investigate the role of metacognitions related to social media addiction in individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional case-control study, 99 participants aged 18-65 years with social anxiety disorder and 113 con

Social comparison and maladaptive emotion regulation are associated with poorer mental health in social media users.

The ubiquity of social technologies in daily life has intensified concerns about their psychological impact. Emerging evidence points to the quality of engagement and the psychological processes that social media use activates. This study examined these processes in a nationally representative sample of 1,707 adults aged 16-75 (M = 44.5, SD = 14.8), 50.40% females. Objective screen-time verification was complemented with validated self-report questionnaires measuring anxiety and depression symptomatology, anger reactions and displaced aggression, social comparison, and maladaptive emotion regu

How enterprise social media use affects employee well-being.

The widespread adoption of enterprise social media (ESM) in hybrid and remote work settings has transformed workplace collaboration by enabling seamless connectivity and real-time interaction. Yet it also requires employees to remain continuously responsive and digitally present. These conditions increase communication overload and blur work-personal boundaries, reflecting the phenomenon of techno-invasion. Such disruptions may heighten psychological strain and diminish well-being. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this study examines how distinct ESM-induced job demands-commun

Contraceptive pills and thrombosis: effects of the French crisis on prescriptions and consequences for medicine agencies.

The higher risk of venous thromboembolism with 3rd and 4th- generations combined oral contraceptives compared to 2nd generation triggered a media crisis in France. Exposure to 3rd or 4th-generation combined oral contraceptives led to an annual excess of around 100 premature deaths in Europe. In the absence of any demonstrated additional benefit of these combined oral contraceptives, measures were taken to decrease exposure of women to this illegitimate excess of risk. As a consequence, this crisis saw a 45% decrease in the prescription of 3rd and 4th-generations combined oral contraceptives, w

Integrated Multicultural Media Campaign to Increase COVID-19 Education and Vaccination Among Californians, 2021.

Despite the availability of safe, effective COVID-19 vaccines, many remain unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. In 2021, the California Department of Public Health launched a California-wide integrated multicultural vaccine media campaign. The campaign was evaluated in two waves through online surveys with adults (n = 1594; n = 1575). Campaign exposure was associated with looking for vaccine information, visiting a state vaccine Web site, and becoming fully vaccinated during the campaign. Higher campaign exposure was associated with greater odds of vaccine engagement. (Am J Public Health. 202

The challenge of intentional tanning in teens and young adults.

Changing UV exposure in adolescents and young adults has the potential to prevent years of excess exposure and subsequent skin cancer. Initial expectations were that an individual or media campaign informational approach would change this behavior. It is being recognized that current efforts have failed. Changing UV behaviors is challenging and has much in common with changing other health risk behaviors. The tanning industry benefits from recruiting new participants in this risky behavior. Research is just beginning to show some promising approaches, and will benefit from our experience attem

Altered exposure-related reshaping of body appreciation in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa.

Several studies suggest a relation between repeated exposure to extremely thin bodies in media and the perceptual and emotional disturbances of body representation in anorexia nervosa (AN). In this study, we utilized an exposure paradigm to investigate how perceptual experience modulates body appreciation in adolescents with AN as compared to healthy adolescents. Twenty AN patients and 20 healthy controls were exposed to pictures of thin or round models and were then required to express liking judgments about bodies of variable weight. Brief exposure to round models increased the liking judgme

Sports, Gigs, and TikToks: Multichannel Advertising of Oral Nicotine Pouches.

This commentary highlights the aggressive advertising strategies being used to market oral nicotine pouches, including through online media, motorsport sponsorships, and out-of-home adverts. We underscore the need for balanced policy measures that maintain access to reduced harm alternatives for existing tobacco and nicotine users while minimizing exposure to youth and nonusers.

Abortion in entertainment media, 2019-2024.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Entertainment media contribute to how people understand and make sense of health issues, especially stigmatized ones such as abortion. This paper reviews the peer-reviewed literature published between 2019 and 2024 on how abortion is depicted in scripted television and film available for viewing in the United States. RECENT FINDINGS: The majority of recent studies focus on qualitative content analysis of a composite of television shows, documenting the myriad ways that these programs reflect and are distinct from the reality of abortion access in the United States. The quan

Essentials of environmental health. Enhancing your occupational health nursing practice (Part I).

1. The environment is a primary determinant of health status of individuals and communities. Environmental hazards are widespread and poorly understood. 2. The five parameters of exposure pathways for environmental hazards include source of contamination; environmental media and transport mechanism; point of exposure; route of exposure; and receptor population. Routes of exposure to environmental hazards include percutaneous (dermal); inhalation; ingestion, gastrointestinal tract; and transplacental. 3. Humans vary widely in their susceptibility to potential environmental hazards. The human re

Outdoor food advertising landscape along school-age children's daily commute routes in Chengdu: implications for childhood obesity prevention.

BACKGROUND: The advertising of unhealthy foods has been recognized as a significant contributor to childhood overweight and obesity. In China, childhood obesity has become an escalating public health concern. Despite this, data on outdoor food advertising, one of the most common advertising forms that children encounter in their daily lives is not well documented in China, leaving gaps in an understanding of its exposure, impact and implications for policy interventions. Collaborating with UNICEF China, this study investigated outdoor advertising in 3 key settings (roadside environment around

Familial and microbiological contribution to the otitis-prone condition.

OBJECTIVE: Our group has an ongoing clinical research project investigating the immunology of the otitis-prone (OP) phenotype. In light of evidence that this condition arises from underlying immunological defects, we examined our sample population of stringently defined OP (sOP) children suffering 3 episodes of acute otitis media within 6 months or 4 within a year for a familial association with the sOP phenotype. METHODS: We analyzed the frequency of sOP within and between families and the nasopharyngeal (NP) otopathogen colonization patterns within and between families. RESULTS: The presen

Social Media Use and Health: What We Have Known So Far, and What We Need to Investigate in the Future.

This review examines the evolving relationship between social media use and health from the perspective of the World Health Organization (WHO), which defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Drawing on recent empirical findings and systematic reviews, this paper synthesizes current evidence regarding how social media use relates to the three dimensions of health and may facilitate the spread of health misinformation. As social media has become deeply integrated into daily life, understanding these dynamics is increasingly important for developing evidence-

The 2016 Tips From Former Smokers® Campaign: Associations With Quit Intentions and Quit Attempts Among Smokers With and Without Mental Health Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: People living with mental health conditions (MH+) are more likely to smoke cigarettes than people without mental health conditions (MH-) and to experience tobacco-related disparities. The Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) campaign is a proven population-level strategy for motivating smokers to quit. In 2016, Tips included ads featuring Rebecca, a former smoker with depression. We evaluated self-reported frequency of exposure to the Rebecca and other Tips ads in association with quit intentions and quit attempts among MH+ and MH- smokers. METHODS: Intentions to quit and past 6-mo

Televised relational and physical aggression and children's hostile intent attributions.

An experiment was conducted with 150 children (mean age=10.1years) in third to fifth grades to test whether exposure to different forms of aggression in the media affected hostile attributional biases in response to different forms of provocation scenarios. Children were randomly assigned to watch a clip containing physical aggression, relational aggression, or no aggression. After exposure, children were asked to respond to a series of written provocation scenarios where a character caused some form of harm (instrumental or relational) to a target person, but the intent of the provocateur was

Exposure to family planning messages and contraceptive use among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional program impact evaluation study.

Many women of reproductive age in sub Saharan Africa are not utilizing any contraceptive method which is contributing to the high burden of maternal mortality. This study determined the prevalence, trends, and the impact of exposure to family planning messages (FPM) on contraceptive use (CU) among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We utilized the most recent data from demographic and health surveys across 26 SSA countries between 2013 and 2019. We assessed the prevalence and trends and quantified the impact of exposure to FPM on contraceptive use using augmented inverse pr

Effects of ethanol-and choline-treated astrocytes on hippocampal neuron neurite outgrowth in vitro.

Exposure to ethanol in utero can result in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which may cause long-lasting cognitive and behavioral abnormalities. Preclinical studies indicate that choline ameliorates the behavioral effects of developmental alcohol exposure in rodents, and clinical studies on the effectiveness of choline, administered early in pregnancy, showed that the adverse effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure on postnatal growth, and cognition in human infants were mitigated. However, little is known on the mechanisms behind the effects of choline. We have previously reported that as
