The Impact of Restrictive Abortion Laws on Medical Residency Applications and Healthcare Access: Implications for Maternal Health Equity.

The 2022 Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization returned regulatory authority over abortion to the states and precipitated a wave of restrictive state-level legislation. This narrative review examines how these state responses have influenced medical residency applications, physician training, and maternal health equity. Existing research indicates that restrictive state laws have contributed to a decline in residency applications to programs in jurisdictions with near-total abortion bans. A growing body of evidence suggests that many medical students, particularl

Artificial Intelligence in Gynecologic Cytology.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally with highest incidence and mortality identified in less developed and medically underserved areas in the world. The diminishing cytology workforce, unavailability of expert consultation, and the high volume of Pap tests needing manual screening are the main reasons for exploring innovative solutions to help mitigate the negative effects resulting from the dearth of timely cervical cancer screening in certain population groups. SUMMARY: Developments in whole slide imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) have enable…

Closing Tobacco Treatment Gaps for Rural Populations: The Role of Clinic-Based Pharmacists at a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for healthcare advice in rural communities, where access to healthcare is limited. Tobacco cessation rates improve with counseling from a pharmacist, and in many states, pharmacists can now prescribe medications for quitting. This study aimed to explore smoking behavior and cessation motivations among patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) clinic in rural Wyoming, estimate the prevalence of tobacco-related interventions by clinic staff, and assess patients' interest in engaging in pharmacist-led cessation programs. A cross-sectio

First-in-human transcontinental telesurgery collaboration for high intensity-focused ultrasound: a new era in globalizing focal treatment for prostate cancer.

The advent of telesurgery has opened a new frontier within minimally invasive surgery, allowing surgeons to complete procedures from a remote location and providing new opportunities for the delivery of care. Herein, we present the first clinical experience of telesurgery using high intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU) for focal treatment of prostate cancer. The procedure was performed using the Focal One® device (Focal One, Austin, TX, USA) on a 72-year-old with an ISUP Grade Group 2 prostate cancer from a single biopsy core that corresponds to a PIRADS 4 lesion in the left mid-apical region.

Twelve years after abortion decriminalization in Mexico City: Can we still remain an island of liberties?

Latin America hosts the most restrictive abortion legislation globally. In 2007, Mexico, the second largest Catholic country in the world, decriminalized elective abortion within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy in the capital: Mexico City (also known as Federal District of Mexico). Following the reform, the Mexico City Ministry of Health (MX-MOH) implemented safe and legal services. Free services are provided to Mexico City residents and a sliding fee of up to $100 is applied to women from other Mexican states. Conscientious objection (CO) was addressed and included in service provision gu
