Fourteen women served as subjects in a study of the relationships between emotional states, enjoyment of activities, and reproductive hormones. Each subject was psychologically and physically healthy, had a documented history of normal and regular menstrual cycles, was not taking oral contraceptives, and was involved in an ongoing heterosexual relationship. Each woman participated for at least two complete menstrual cycles. The Profile of Mood States and the Social-Sexual Activities Log were filled out daily; other questionnaires were completed less frequently. Blood was drawn between 3 and 5 …

BACKGROUND: Women with congenital and acquired long QT syndrome (LQTS) have increased risk of adverse cardiac events after adolescence, mainly due to sex hormones modulating the KCNH2 cardiac potassium channel. We hypothesized that sex hormones may influence ventricular tachyarrhythmia risk during the menstrual cycle in women treated with QT-prolonging drugs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between repolarization dynamics and sex hormone levels during the menstrual cycle in women treated with QT-prolonging drugs.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 41 women treated with dofetilide or s…

Protein turnover may be influenced by menstrual cycle hormones and hormones from oral contraceptives (OCs) and hormonal intrauterine devices (H-IUDs), yet data are limited. This study evaluated whole-body protein turnover in 40 healthy, active females (eumenorrheic = 15; OC = 13; H-IUD = 12) tested once in low- and high-hormone phases. Using a [15N]alanine tracer, net protein balance, synthesis, breakdown, and nitrogen flux were measured. No group differences were observed. Protein breakdown and nitrogen flux were higher in the low-hormone phase in the total sample. These small hormone cycle p…

INTRODUCTION: Surgical bleeding remains a key determinant of morbidity in abdominoplasty and lipoabdominoplasty. While hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle have been linked to altered hemostasis in hormonally responsive tissues such as breast and nasal mucosa, their impact on hormonally inert tissues like the abdominal wall remains unclear. This study prospectively evaluated whether menstrual phase influences perioperative bleeding in lipoabdominoplasty.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective, single-center study enrolled 90 women (18-55 years) undergoing standardized lipoabdominopla…

Hormone sensitivity is a heterogeneous phenomenon involving multiple dimensions of sensitivity to estrogen and progesterone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. While the majority of menstruating individuals do not experience any significant impact from these hormone changes on mood or behavior, rates of hormone sensitivity in clinical populations, particularly affective disorders, are substantially elevated, suggesting potential shared psychosocial or physiological mechanisms or moderators of risk. In this review, we provide an overview of menstrually related mood disorders and dimensions…

PURPOSE: The menstrual cycle is a complex biological process regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, resulting in cyclical hormonal changes that affect various physiological systems. Irisin, a myokine linked to energy metabolism, and kisspeptin, a key regulator of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, are emerging as essential modulators of reproductive function. This study evaluated phase-specific changes in serum irisin and kisspeptin levels and their associations with food intake during the menstrual cycle in healthy premenopausal women.
METHODS: A total of 21 wome…

Background Suicide remains a significant global public health issue. The influence of menstrual cycle phases on mental health, especially in conditions like premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), has raised concerns about possible connections between hormonal changes and suicidal tendencies. Previous research has produced mixed findings regarding the relationship between menstrual phases and suicide. This study aims to investigate this potential correlation through histopathological examination. Methods This cross-sectional comparative study was conducted at a government medical college in No…

STUDY QUESTION: Do polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menstrual cycle phases, and ovulatory status affect reproductive tract (RT) microbiome profiles?
SUMMARY ANSWER: We identified microbial features associated with menstrual cycle phases in the upper and lower RT microbiome, but only two specific differences in the upper RT according to PCOS status.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The vaginal and uterine microbiome profiles vary throughout the menstrual cycle. Studies have reported alterations in the vaginal microbiome among women diagnosed with PCOS.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This prospective c…

PURPOSE: Substrate metabolism during exercise may vary across the menstrual cycle (MC) phases, likely due to estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4). This study examined substrate metabolism during exercise in naturally menstruating (NoOC, n = 34) and women using combined oral contraceptives (COC, n = 19).
METHODS: Participants were measured in a fasted state in the follicular (FOL) and luteal (LUT) phases, or the inactive (INACT) and active (ACT) phases of COC use. Serum E2 and P4 were assessed using immunoassays and body composition via bioimpedance. Peak fat oxidation (PFO) and FAT MAX , the …

BACKGROUND: Limited data exists on the influence of menstrual cycle (MC) phase and oral contraceptive (OC) phase on physical performance in endurance-trained females due to poor control regarding MC verification and differentiation. We aimed to evaluate exercise performance and the respiratory response to exercise in three distinct phases of the MC and OC cycle in endurance-trained females.
METHODS: Using a prospective cohort study design, we recruited trained females (Vo<inf>2max</inf> 52±4 mL O<inf>2</inf>/min/kg) who were either not using oral contraceptives (NOC) or using monophasic OCs. …

Currently, knowledge of changes in cardiovascular function across the menstrual cycle and how these changes may inform upon underlying health is limited. Utilizing wrist-worn biometric data we developed a novel measure to quantify and investigate the cardiovascular fluctuation (i.e. cardiovascular amplitude) within resting heart rate (RHR) and heart rate variability (RMSSD) across 11,590 participants and 45,811 menstrual cycles. Within participants, RHR and RMSSD fluctuated in a regular pattern throughout the menstrual cycle, with population RHRmin and RMSSDmax at cycle day 5, RHRmax at day 26…

BACKGROUND: The uterus undergoes dynamic changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is based on the non-Gaussian distribution of water molecules and can perhaps represent the changes of uterine microstructure.
PURPOSE: To investigate the temporal changes in DKI-parameters of the normal uterine corpus and cervix during the menstrual cycle.
STUDY TYPE: Prospective.
POPULATION: 21 healthy female volunteers (26.64 ± 4.72 years) with regular menstrual cycles (28 ± 7 days).
FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Readout segmentation of long variable echo-trains (RESOLVE)-based DK…

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare but serious complication of controlled ovarian stimulation. Frozen-embryo transfer (ET) is prompted to be performed in the next menstrual cycles after cancellation of fresh-ET after occurrence of OHSS. However, effects of frozen-ET in the second menstrual cycle have never been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess this in the menstrual cycle after OHSS.
METHODS: The OHSS group included 342 women with moderate-severe OHSS who underwent the first frozen-ET in the second menstrual cycle in the First Affiliated Hospital …
