This paper reports on data collected in 2011 from a national study about the operation of the best interests principle, a key feature of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 for England and Wales. The objective was to provide a picture of current professional practices in best interests decision-making. Four contrasting sample sites were selected, in which National Health Service trusts, social care and other organisations were recruited to participate. A multimethod design was followed, including an online survey with 385 participants, followed by qualitative research through a telephone survey

OBJECTIVE: The decisional capacity of severely depressed people frequently comes into question. The ability to improve this decisional capacity through educational efforts alone is not known. Our study aimed to determine the decisional capacity of severely depressed people requiring electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and whether educational interventions improve their ability to provide informed consent for ECT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty subjects with severe depression were recruited. Using the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment instrument, decisional capacity was assessed at

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to adversity is universal to the human experience and may impact mental health negatively. However, competing hypotheses predict that repeated adversity leads to either sensitisation or habituation.
METHODS: Using a 22-year Australian population-based panel study, we examined changes in mental health following repeated exposure to seven common adverse life events in adulthood. Mixed-effects regression models estimated the relationship between repeated exposure to adverse life events of the same type and its impact on the Mental Health Inventory-5 score.
RESULTS:

PURPOSE: This study compared mental health outcomes in preadolescents with and without a history of late talking (HLT) to determine whether outcomes cascade from early language ability, considering ecological and early mental health factors.
METHOD: We included 52 Mandarin-speaking preadolescents (100% Han Chinese) 9-11 years of age: 26 with HLT (M = 10.15 years, SD = 0.34; 20 boys, six girls) and 26 without HLT (M = 10.20 years, SD = 0.38; 17 boys, nine girls). Both groups had comparable nonverbal cognitive abilities (p = .721). The mental health outcomes assessed, based on parents' reports

Change is an inevitable part of life yet navigating it can be challenging. Students transitioning from school to higher education encounter unique stressors that can significantly impact their mental health. International students face compounded difficulties as they adapt to life abroad, often for the first time, without immediate support from family and friends. This transition introduces independent living, which demands new responsibilities such as managing finances, academics, and personal well-being-tasks that are frequently underestimated. These challenges are exacerbated by cultural ad

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders endanger people's health and lives. General practitioners (GPs) play a valuable role in identifying and treating mental disorders in outpatient clinical settings. However, there are obstacles for GPs' identification in developing countries.
OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to identify the related obstacles and to propose optimized strategies.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 26 GPs from seven randomly sampled community healthcare centers in Shanghai, China. The interview guide was based primarily on the items from mental status evaluation. After t

Patients with serious and persistent mental illness may experience intractable suffering despite exhaustive treatment, challenging the dominant curative paradigm in psychiatry. Palliative psychiatry offers an emerging alternative-prioritizing comfort, dignity, and quality of life when remission is no longer attainable. This article presents a comprehensive ethical and clinical framework for integrating palliative psychiatry into psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) practice. Drawing parallels with somatic palliative care, the author explores the theoretical foundations, diagnos

Maltreatment of the elderly is a common problem that affects more than 3% of the elderly. We report on two cases of fatal neglect. Risk factors of victims and caregivers were analysed in the context of the social history. In both cases, the victims had a dominant personality and the abusers (the sons) had been strictly controlled and formed by the parent. The victims showed typical risk factors such as living together with the abuser, isolation, dependence on care, income and money administration. Initially, the victims declined help from outside and self-neglect occurred. The unemployed perpe

The one-year prevalence and correlates of selected DSM-III-R disorders were determined in a sample of 930 18-year-olds. Using both diagnostic and impairment criteria 340 individuals (36.6%) were considered to have disorder. The most prevalent disorders were major depressive episode (16.7%), alcohol dependence (10.4%) and social phobia (11.1%). There was a high degree of co-morbidity among disorders; 46% of those with disorder had two or more. The prevalence of disorders was greater for females, with the exception of conduct disorder and alcohol or marijuana dependence. A variety of characteris

INTRODUCTION: Depression and occupational burnout are prevalent mental health challenges in working-age populations and are linked to adverse health behaviors, with these concerns particularly relevant among individuals with obesity. Although prior research suggests associations with eating behaviors and physical activity, most studies rely on cross-sectional designs, leaving the temporal and potentially bidirectional relationships between mental health and health behaviors unclear.
METHODS: This longitudinal study examined bidirectional associations between depressive and burnout symptoms, e

Objectives: Informed by implementation science, this exploratory study examined the capabilities, opportunities, and motivations of Australian mental health clinicians (N = 38) associated with the implementation of exposure and response prevention (ERP) for youth (i.e., children and adolescents) with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It also explored how the capabilities and motivations of mental health clinicians untrained in ERP for youth (i.e., typical clinicians; n = 25) differed from clinicians experienced in the use of ERP for youth (i.e., experienced clinicians; n = 13). BACKGROUND: Women recently released from incarceration have increased rates of co-occurring substance use, physical health, and mental health disorders. During re-entry, they face challenges navigating needed health services and social services stemming from these problems. Women's Initiative Supporting Health Transitions Clinic (WISH-TC) is a primary care program that facilitates treatment access for re-entering women. Strategies include support and navigation assistance from peer community health workers.
METHODS: Thirteen participants, of whom 11 had a substance use disorder, completed sem

Despite the critical role of mental health services in suicide prevention, disparities in service utilization persist across various individual and social determinants of health. This study identifies key factors and intersectional patterns associated with mental healthcare use among young adults with past-year suicidal ideation, by developing machine learning-based artificial intelligence to improve predictive accuracy while ensuring interpretability for clinicians and policymakers. Utilizing cross-sectional data from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we analyzed 11,018 US

This study investigated associations between social media use and mental and physical health among university students in Japan, integrating the dual-factor model of mental health with a portfolio-based perspective on social media. Mental health was assessed using subjective well-being (SWB) and depression tendency (DT), and physical health using gastrointestinal problems (GP) and headaches. An online survey of 462 participants identified two predominant usage patterns that were retained for subgroup analysis: LINE + X + Instagram (Group 1, n = 123) and LINE + X + Instagram + Discord (Group 2,

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe patient experiences and attitudes about the role of the mental health professional as it relates to pursuing gender affirmation surgery.
METHODS: This was a mixed-models study with semi-structured interviews. Participants who presented for gender affirming vaginoplasty and had completed pre-surgical requirements but had not yet had the procedure were invited to participate in the study. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted from November 2019 and December 2020 until saturation of themes was achieved at a sample size of 14. Interviews were then t

Although the mental health consequences of domestic violence are well documented, empirical evidence is scarce regarding the mental health effects of violence in the workplace. Most studies have used data from small occupation-specific samples, limiting their generalizability. This article examines whether direct exposure to work-related violence is associated with clinically pertinent mental health problems, measured by purchases of psychotropics (antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics), in a cross-occupational sample of 15,246 Danish employees free from using psychotropics at baseline. INTRODUCTION: Capacity to consent is a legal and ethical consideration when undertaking medical imaging on those people living with dementia. Capacity refers to an individual's ability to make informed decisions for themselves, and is a necessary requirement for valid consent. Previous research has not provided enough insight into establishing capacity to consent and how to proceed with imaging when capacity is lacking, to properly inform practice or policy. This study aims to explore diagnostic radiographers' experiences and understandings of gaining valid informed consent during general radi

AbstractIdiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus presents distinctive ethical challenges, since its treatment requires lifelong device-based therapy in the setting of diagnostic and prognostic uncertainty. Although randomized controlled trials and pooled analyses demonstrate that cerebrospinal fluid shunting can substantially improve gait, and often continence and cognition, outcomes remain variable, and complications requiring revision occur in a significant minority of patients. These realities complicate informed consent, capacity assessment in cognitively vulnerable older adults, and just

BACKGROUND: This study analyzes Supreme Court decisions involving parties diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) between 2008 and 2024, focusing on disability justice and the normative evaluation of judicial practice. MS is a chronic neurological disease with potential physical and neurocognitive consequences that may affect legal capacity, employment, and social participation. The study is grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Daniels’ principle of Fair Equality of Opportunity, and Fricker’s concept of epistemic injustice.
