This commentary describes the implementation and impact of the Allied Health Scientist role within a pediatric hospital system. A dedicated Allied Health Scientist can support allied health professionals at both the individual and system level by providing mentorship, building research capacity, and fostering a culture of evidence-based practice. AIMS: This pilot study compared smoking outcomes between wellness-coaching for smoking cessation and a control group.
METHODS: Thirty-one individuals were enrolled in an educational group on smoking cessation and 23 completed an eight-session manualized education. Fernando A. Silveira had the unique combination of being a sagacious scientist and a remarkable human being. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to understanding bee diversity and keenly spread this scientific information to the academic community at large and beyond the university walls. His rich character, warm heart, strong voice and laughter are missed by those privileged to be Fernandos students, friends, mentors, and family. In this volume, we honor Fernando A. Silveira, who prematurely passed away at the age of 62, leaving three sons, his wife, and numerous friends.

Having been afforded many opportunities throughout my academic career, I took on the challenges that chronicled my path to leadership. In many instances, I was the first person of color to enter that educational and leadership environment. I am grateful to many mentors who have guided and supported me over the 4 decades since the time of my residency through fellowships and the various institutions to which I have been affiliated. It continues to be a great journey, making a contribution to the Ob Gyn academic community and advocating for quality and equitable women's health care.
