The ultrastructure of trabeculectomy specimens obtained from enucleated eyes was compared to that of 23 similar specimens extracted from glaucomatous eyes. It was thus possible to study the trabecular meshwork from Schwalbe's line to the iris root, the corneal endothelium, the canal of Schlemm, its inner and outer walls, and the collectors. The case of a patient 53 years old that had a picture of cortical impairment and pyramidal disfunction, leading in 6 months to acinetic mutism is reported. The histopathology lead to the diagnostic of Creutzeldt-Jakob disease, with neuronal loss, gliosis and status spongiosus. The electron-microscopic examination showed that the status spongiosus was due to cellular processes, some having vesicular bodies sugestive of pre-synaptic vesicles.

We have studied the surface characteristics of human lymphoid cells with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). We obtained thymic cells by mincing thymus and isolating peripheral blood lymphocytes from normal donors as well as patients with acute and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (ALL and CLL). Ultrastructural pathology is critical in the morphologic evaluation and characterization of subcellular structures in nonclinical toxicity and efficacy studies. The author reported previously on separation of the outer tegument of the spargana (plerocercoids of Spirometra mansoni) using high concentration of urea solution. The results of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) of 12 lenses after mechanical eye injury with rupture of Zinn ligament fibers in elderly patients. SEM results are compared to those of lenses after senile cataract cryoextraction including pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES).
