A survey of Brevipalpus mite species and their predators in Costa Rican citrus and coffee plantations.

Brevipalpus mites pose a significant threat to citrus and coffee production worldwide due to their transmission of plant viruses. This study surveyed all seven provinces of Costa Rica to identify Brevipalpus species associated with these economically vital crops. The investigation revealed the presence of five Brevipalpus species, including B. yothersi, a major vector of citrus leprosis cilevirus in numerous countries, B. papayensis, previously linked to coffee ringspot dichorhavirus in South America, B. phoenicis, B. californicus, and B. azores, vectors of dichorhaviruses causing citrus lepro…

Darwin's solution: Honeybees survive mite vectors and viruses through natural selection.

Complex host-vector-virus interfaces can impose serious health challenges. Western honeybees have experienced high colony losses globally, mainly driven by the host-shifted, virus-vectoring ectoparasitic mites Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps mercedesae. Host populations can survive mite infestations through natural selection, offering a long-term strategy for colony health. However, host-vector-virus coevolution requires local adaptations of this triad, which is poorly understood. We propose harnessing natural selection through a global approach focused on standardized monitoring of colony …

Sequential sampling of the citrus leprosis mite in different cultivation systems in the Eastern Amazon.

Citrus leprosis is a major viral disease transmitted by the citrus leprosis mite (Brevipalpus spp.), causing significant economic losses in … uential sampling plan determined that the maximum expected sampling units for decision-making is 21 mites per plant and 28 mites per six branches in both systems. These thresholds were established based on the observed distribution pattern and aim to enhance monitoring efficiency. Although these values may seem low, they indicate the infestation level a …

STING-dependent induction of neutrophilic asthma exacerbation in response to house dust mite.

BACKGROUND: Severe refractory, neutrophilic asthma remains an unsolved clinical problem. STING agonists induce a neutrophilic response in the airways, suggesting that STING activation may contribute to the triggering of neutrophilic exacerbations. We aim to determine whether STING-induced neutrophilic lung inflammation mimics severe asthma. METHODS: We developed new models of neutrophilic lung inflammation induced by house dust mite (HDM) plus STING agonists diamidobenzimidazole (diABZI) or cGAMP in wild-type, and conditional-STING-deficient mice. We measured DNA damage, cell death, NETs, cGA

This "mite" Surprise You: Scabies Masquerading as Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is a common parasitic infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies can mimic other entities clinically, resulting in misdiagnosis. The presence of a mite in the stratum corneum on biopsy specimens is diagnostic of scabies. However, there are instances when mites are not visible, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining may be misleading. An example is when IHC demonstrates Cluster of Differentiation 1a and S100 positivity. The main differential diagnosis for this finding is Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a group of idiopathic disorders of bone marrow-derived La…

Characteristics of dust mite sublingual immunotherapy-associated adverse events in the early phase.

BACKGROUND: Few studies reported the characteristics of house dust mite (HDM) sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) adverse events (AEs) during early phase treatment. The aim of this prospective study was mainly to explore the characteristics of AEs in allergic rhinitis (AR) patients during 6 months of HDM SLIT. METHODS: A total of 242 patients with AR were enrolled in this study. Telephone follow-up and administration were conducted in the every week of the first month, the third month, and the sixth month of SLIT treatment. Furthermore, the early efficacy, AEs, and compliance were analyzed in our

Contact hypersensitivity and Demodex mite infestation in patients with rosacea: a retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Contact hypersensitivity or Demodex mite infestation is commonly reported in patients with rosacea. However, the associations and clinical implications of these two phenomena are poorly described in the literature. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between clinical characteristics, contact sensitization profiles, and Demodex mite infestation in patients with rosacea. MATERIALS & METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 189 patients diagnosed with rosacea, and categorized the patients into a rosacea-contact hypersensitivity or rosacea-non-contact hypersensiti

Systematic Characterization of the Group 2 House Dust Mite Allergen in Dermatophagoides microceras.

BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma, a chronic airway inflammatory disease, is a critical public health problem. Indoor house dust mites (HDMs) could cause allergic asthma. The prevalence of sensitization to Dermatophagoides microceras (Der m) was approximately 80% and is related to the immunoglobulin E crossing-reactivity of mites belonging to the same genus, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) and Dermatophagoides farina (Der f). However, studies on Der m are scant. METHODS: We used integrated OMICs approaches to identify and characterize the group 2 mite allergen-like protein in Der m (Der m 2)…

The Role of Nasal Endoscopy in Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Sublingual Immunotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: While there exists considerable evidence for efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), its impact on the improvement of nasal signs in allergic rhinitis (AR) patients remains quite unclear. In this study, the endoscopic examination and the modified Lund-Kennedy (MLK) scoring system were performed to describe and evaluate the therapeutic effect of SLIT. METHODS: A total of 105 patients with AR induced by house dust mites were enrolled and treated with standardized Dermatophagoides farinae (D. farinae) drops for 1 year. The total nasal symptoms score (TNSS), total medication sc…

Environmental allergens house dust mite-induced asthma is associated with ferroptosis in the lungs.

Previous studies have indicated that allergens such as house dust mites (HDM) in the environment can induce allergic asthma. Ferroptosis is a newly discovered form of regulatory cell death characterized by aberrant lipid peroxidation and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells. However, whether ferroptosis participates in the pathological process of asthma remains to be elucidated. The present study used a HDM-induced mouse asthma model to determine the effect of HDM exposure on allergic asthma and its underlying mechanisms. Female BALB/c mice were intranasally exposed to HD…

Management of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, using silica-based acaricides.

Four silica-based acaricides were examined in laboratory tests for their effectiveness against poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae. All acaricides resulted in 100% mite mortality. Two groups of active ingredients could be differentiated. The products Silicosec® and Ewazid®, based on naturally occurring diatomaceous earth (DE), killed 100% of adult D. gallinae within 48 h exposure time. The time to kill 50% of the mites (LT50) was calculated to be 31.7 and 34.9 h, respectively. The other two products, containing aggregates and agglomerates of pyrogenic synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide as …

Improved diagnostic clarity in shrimp allergic non-dust-mite sensitized patients.

BACKGROUND: Allergen specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) levels predictive of shrimp allergy have not been identified, but these may be helpful in identifying patients at risk for shrimp-induced allergic reactions. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to identify component resolved diagnostic tests useful for diagnosis of shrimp allergy in patients with or without house-dust mite (HDM) sensitization to the major allergen cysteine protease (Der p 1). METHODS: Patients with positive skin-prick test (SPT) results and/or sIgE values were recruited. Shrimp allergy was classified by oral food challenge (OFC)

Role of NKp46+ natural killer cells in house dust mite-driven asthma.

House dust mite (HDM)-allergic asthma is driven by T helper 2 (Th2) lymphocytes, but also innate immune cells control key aspects of the disease. The precise function of innate natural killer (NK) cells during the initiation and propagation of asthma has been very confusing, in part because different, not entirely specific, strategies were used to target these cells. We show that HDM inhalation rapidly led to the accumulation of NK cells in the lung-draining lymph nodes and of activated CD69+ NK cells in the bronchoalveolar lumen. However, genetically engineered Ncr1-DTA or Ncr1-DTR mice that

Spotlight on avian pathology: red mite, a serious emergent problem in layer hens.

Dermanyssus gallinae, the poultry red mite, is currently the most important ectoparasite of the egg laying industry worldwide with an expanding global prevalence. As a blood-feeder, it causes anaemia and severe welfare issues to the hens and it is a major cause of economic losses. It is also a vector for Salmonella species, avian influenza and potentially for other vector-borne pathogens. Paradoxically, there is a notable lack of funding for research into poultry red mite and an urgent need for effective and safe control strategies, sustainable therapies, prophylactics and integrated pest mana

The Guinea Pig Sensitized by House Dust Mite: A Model of Experimental Cough Studies.

The guinea pig sensitized by ovalbumin is the most widely used model to study cough experimentally, as the neurophysiology of the vagus nerve in the guinea pig is closest to humans. Nonetheless, the choice of the antigen remains questionable, which influences the translation of results into clinical medicine. The present study seeks to develop an alternative model of cough study using house dust mite sensitization (HDM). Thirty guinea pigs were divided into the HDM group, ovalbumin (OVA) group, and control group based on their cough response to 0.4 M citric acid. In the HDM group animals were

TSLP receptor is not essential for house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis in mice.

TSLP induces Th2 cytokine production by Th2 cells and various other types of cells, thereby contributing to Th2-type immune responses and development of allergic disorders. We found that house dust mite (HDM) extract induced TSLP production by nasal epithelial cells, suggesting that TSLP may be involved in development of HDM-induced allergic rhinitis (AR). To investigate that possibility in greater detail, wild-type and TSLP receptor-deficient (TSLPR-/-) mice on the C57BL/6J background were repeatedly treated intranasally with HDM extract. The frequency of sneezing, numbers of eosinophils and

Sarcoptes scabiei: The Mange Mite with Mighty Effects on the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus).

Parasitism has both direct and indirect effects on hosts. Indirect effects (such as behavioural changes) may be common, although are often poorly described. This study examined sarcoptic mange (caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei) in the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), a species that shows severe symptoms of infection and often causes mortality. Wombats showed alterations to above ground behaviours associated with mange. Infected wombats were shown to be active outside of the burrow for longer than healthy individuals. Additionally, they spent more time scratching and drinking, and less tim
