The influence of personal dispositional factors and organizational resources on workplace violence, burnout, and health outcomes in new graduate nurses: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The alarmingly high rate of illness-related absenteeism among nurses and recent reports of workplace violence and burnout are problematic for both the current workforce shortage and the recruitment and retention of new nurses. OBJECTIVES: To test a model derived from Leiter and Maslach's (2004) Six Areas of Worklife Model linking workplace factors (six areas of worklife, experiences of bullying and burnout) and a personal dispositional factor (psychological capital) to new graduates mental and physical health in their first year of practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey desi

Rabbit Maternal Behavior: A Perspective from Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, Animal Production, and Psychobiology.

Rabbit maternal behavior (MB) impacts meat and fur production on the farm, survival of the species in the wild, and pet welfare. Specific characteristics of rabbit MB (i.e., three-step nest building process; single, brief, daily nursing bout) have been used as models for exploring particular themes in neuroscience, like obsessive-compulsive actions, circadian rhythms, and cognition. Particular hormonal combinations regulate nest building by acting on brain regions controlling MB in other mammals. Nonhormonal factors like type of lodging and the doe's social rank influence nursing and milk prod

Air in Line: An Alarming Issue.

BACKGROUND: The infusion of air from IV tubing can adversely affect the vascular system and potentially result in a venous air embolism. Infusion pumps are designed to alarm when air in the IV line (AIL) reaches a set threshold and can result in disruptions in drug delivery and decreased nursing productivity. Depending on the method employed, removal of AIL can also pose a risk to healthcare workers and patients. OBJECTIVES: This article discusses how AIL occurs, methods used for manual removal, devices currently available to reduce the occurrence, and new technology that may eliminate AIL.

Building comfort with ambiguity in nursing practice.

Current nursing literature recognizes the need to honor the concept of ambiguity. Nurses experience uncertainty with handling or honoring complexity and ambiguity when confronted with times of struggle. Traditional models of care fall short as patients and families define their expectations of the healthcare system. Nurses bear witness to the discomfort caused by the unknown in their daily practice. They are challenged to address their feelings, unsure of what to anticipate, what to say, or how to respond to their patients. Uncertainty diminishes the opportunity for meaningful dialogue between

Nursing workforce deployment and intensive care unit strain during the COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic demanded intensive care units (ICUs) globally to expand to meet increasing patient numbers requiring critical care. Critical care nurses were a finite resource in this challenge to meet growing patient numbers, necessitating redeployment of nursing staff to work in ICUs. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe the extent and manner by which the increased demand for ICU care during the COVID-19 pandemic was met by ICU nursing workforce expansion in the late 2021 and early 2022 in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of Victorian ICUs

Oropharyngeal dysphagia and associated factors among individuals living in nursing homes in northern Sweden in 2007 and 2013.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing difficulties in the oral cavity or pharynx (i.e., oropharyngeal dysphagia) are a common problem in the aging population, which may result in severe consequences, such as malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and mortality. Identifying oropharyngeal dysphagia and its associated factors is essential for establishing better healthcare policies in nursing homes. In this study, we aimed to describe the oropharyngeal dysphagia prevalence among nursing home residents, and to investigate the association between dysphagia and potentially related factors in a large survey of nursing

Feasibility of Using Digital Clinical Records to Identify Factors Associated with Nursing-Sensitive Outcomes During Hospitalization: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Nursing-sensitive outcomes are key indicators of nursing care quality and safety. Digitalization of clinical documentation enables prospective surveillance using routine data, but real-world evidence on integrated digital, clinical record-based approaches remains limited. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of using routinely collected digital data, combined with ward-level indicators, to support nursing-sensitive outcome surveillance and to preliminarily identify factors associated with these outcomes during hospitalization. Methods: An observational pilot study w

Beyond Triage: The Critical Role of Emergency Nurses in COPD Assessment and Management-Insights from Patients and Staff.

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains a leading cause of emergency department (ED) presentation, hospitalisation, and preventable healthcare utilisation worldwide. Although guidelines advocate coordinated, preventative, and community-based management, care within ED settings often remains reactive and crisis-driven. Nurses occupy a central role in COPD management; however, the experiential dimensions of nursing practice and its contribution to improving patient outcomes are insufficiently understood. Objectives: To explore the lived experiences of patients, nurses an

Nursing Leadership Implications for Clinical Placements in Corrections.

Clinical placements in correctional settings offer nursing students unique opportunities for learning mental health and community health concepts, including social justice, restorative justice and the impact of poverty and marginalization on health and life choices. Although there is some evidence to suggest that a small number of nursing programs use clinical placements in correctional settings, relatively little scholarly literature addresses nursing education in such settings, or the implications for nursing leadership when students do have an opportunity to learn in correctional settings.
