Parametric and non-parametric tests for the overall comparison of several treatments to a control when treatment is expected to increase variability.

We consider the problem of making an overall comparison of several treatments to a control where experimental units are randomly assigned to either the 'control' group which receives no treatment or to one of k-1 'treatment' groups. We assume that the effect of the treatments is, if anything, a location shift possibly accompanied by an increase in scale relative to that of the control group. The ANOVA F test loses considerable power in such circumstances. A modification of the ANOVA F test has been proposed which uses the variance estimate from the controls in place of the usual pooled varianc

On the Statistical Limitations of Landmark Analysis for Addressing Immortal Time Bias.

Landmark analysis establishes a fixed "landmark" time, including only individuals who remain event-free up to that point and classifying survivors according to their treatment status at the landmark. By restarting follow-up from this time, the method aims to create comparable groups presumed free from immortal time bias. Despite its simplicity and widespread use, landmark analysis has notable limitations. Under potential outcomes and piecewise proportional hazards, we derived closed-form results for naive, exclusion, and landmark analyses and evaluated them via simulations. We found that landm

Mixture proportional hazards cure model with latent variables.

A mixture proportional hazards cure model with latent variables is proposed. The proposed model assesses the effects of the observed and latent risk factors on the hazards of uncured subjects and the cure rate through a proportional hazards model and a logistic model, respectively. Factor analysis is employed to measure the latent variables through correlated multiple indicators. Maximum likelihood estimation is performed through a Gaussian quadratic technique that approximates the integration over the latent variables. A piecewise constant function is used for the unspecified baseline hazard

Influence of satellite-derived rainfall patterns on plague occurrence in northeast Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In the tropics, rainfall data are seldom accurately recorded, and are often discontinuous in time. In the scope of plague-research in northeast Tanzania, we adapted previous research to reconstruct rainfall patterns at a suitable resolution (1 km), based on time series of NDVI: more accurate satellite imagery was used, in the form of MODIS NDVI, and rainfall data were collected from the TRMM sensors instead of in situ data. First, we established a significant relationship between monthly rainfall and monthly composited MODIS NDVI. The established linear relationship was then used t

A semiparametric additive rates model for recurrent event data.

Recurrent event data often arise in biomedical studies, with examples including hospitalizations, infections, and treatment failures. In observational studies, it is often of interest to estimate the effects of covariates on the marginal recurrent event rate. The majority of existing rate regression methods assume multiplicative covariate effects. We propose a semiparametric model for the marginal recurrent event rate, wherein the covariates are assumed to add to the unspecified baseline rate. Covariate effects are summarized by rate differences, meaning that the absolute effect on the rate fu

Nonparametric estimation for the three-stage irreversible illness-death model.

In this paper, we present new nonparametric estimators of the stage-occupation probabilities in the three-stage irreversible illness-death model. These estimators use a fractional risk set and a reweighting approach and are valid under stage-dependent censoring. Using a simulated data set, we compare the behavior of our estimators with previously proposed estimators. We also apply our estimators to data on time to Pneumocystis pneumonia and death obtained from an AIDS cohort study.

Valid Data-Driven Subgroup Selection With Uniform Guarantees in Clinical Trials.

Subgroup selection in clinical trials is essential for identifying patient groups that react differently to a treatment, thereby enabling personalized medicine. In particular, subgroup selection can identify patient groups that respond particularly well to a treatment or that encounter adverse events more often. However, this is a post-selection inference problem, which may pose challenges for traditional techniques used for subgroup analysis, such as increased Type I error rates and potential biases from data-driven subgroup identification. In this paper, we discuss two recently developed met

Probabilistic pressure-flow operating space for chromatographic resins using mechanistic modeling.

Pressure drop across chromatography columns at constant bed height is affected by column diameter and can be difficult to predict without large-scale data. Modern resin engineering has decreased the focus on pressure drop due to the widespread use of large beads and rigid base matrices. However, with the recent development of several small-bead resins optimized for bioprocessing entering the market, pressure drop has justified a regain of attention. This work seeks to develop and apply a mechanistic model based on force balances for predicting pressure drop across scales. With this approach, f

Self-adaptation of mutation operator and probability for permutation representations in genetic algorithms.

The choice of mutation rate is a vital factor in the success of any genetic algorithm (GA), and for permutation representations this is compounded by the availability of several alternative mutation operators. It is now well understood that there is no one "optimal choice"; rather, the situation changes per problem instance and during evolution. This paper examines whether this choice can be left to the processes of evolution via self-adaptation, thus removing this nontrivial task from the GA user and reducing the risk of poor performance arising from (inadvertent) inappropriate decisions. Correlation of retention factor of analytes in quaternary solvent mobile phases using the Jouyban-Acree model.

The Jouyban-Acree model has been used for the mathematical representation of retention factors of phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine in quaternary aqueous-organic solvent mobile phases. The accuracy of the proposed model is evaluated using average percentage deviation (APD) of experimental and calculated values as an accuracy criterion. The obtained mean and standard deviation of APDs of the model is 4.2 +/- 0.5%. The results showed that the Jouyban-Acree model provided accurate calculations and could be used in practice to speed up the method development process in which quaternary so

Mapping of soil insect infestations sampled by excavation and acoustic methods.

Geostatistical analysis was used to map traditionally and acoustically sampled populations of soil invertebrates at two different times in a hayfield at Grove Hill, AL, and once in an Auburn, AL, hayfield. The distributions of nearly all the soil invertebrates and their sounds were nonrandom in all three mapping studies. The maps constructed by excavation and acoustic sampling methods were compared by correlating the estimated (kriged) soil invertebrate counts with the estimated (kriged) counts of sounds per minute (pulse rate). Acoustic and traditional estimates were positively correlated in

Accounting for response styles in rating data using IRT and IRTree models: A tutorial in R with applications to self-reported metacognitive competence.

Response styles refer to individual differences in the use of the item response format irrespective of item content. They include tendencies to favor or avoid midpoint or extreme response categories, which can distort the measurement of latent constructs. This tutorial provides an overview of IRT and IRTree models that accommodate response style factors, allowing researchers to analyze response-style effects and adjust latent-trait estimates for potential bias. In particular, we give a practical guide to using IRT and IRTree models for response styles and illustrate the workflow of model imple

Field trial analyses of wheat and cassava benefit from spatial correction.

Spatial variation is a major source of error in agricultural field experiments affecting genotype performance prediction. Implementing statistical models that account for spatial effects can improve the prediction of genotype performance. This study evaluated the impact of the P-spline spatial correction method on the estimation of genetic parameters and AIC values in two distinct crops, wheat and cassava, using four models: Block, Block + Spatial, Block + Marker, and Block + Marker + Spatial. Analyses were performed on data from 115 and 68 trials obtained from the T3/WheatCAP and Cassavabase

Semiparametric estimator for the covariate-specific receiver operating characteristic curve.

The study of the predictive ability of a marker is mainly based on the accuracy measures provided by the so-called confusion matrix. Besides, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve has become a popular index for summarizing the overall accuracy of a marker. However, the nature of the relationship between the marker and the outcome, and the role that potential confounders play in this relationship could be fundamental in order to extrapolate the observed results. Directed acyclic graphs commonly used in epidemiology and in causality, could provide good feedback for learning

How to develop, validate, and update clinical prediction models using multinomial logistic regression.

OBJECTIVES: Multicategory prediction models (MPMs) can be used in health care when the primary outcome of interest has more than two categories. The application of MPMs is scarce, possibly due to added methodological complexities compared to binary outcome models. We provide a guide of how to develop, validate, and update clinical prediction models based on multinomial logistic regression. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We present guidance and recommendations based on recent methodological literature, illustrated by a previously developed and validated MPM for treatment outcomes in rheumatoid arth

Integrative multi-environmental genomic prediction in apple.

Genomic prediction for multiple environments can aid the selection of genotypes suited to specific soil and climate conditions. Methodological advances allow effective integration of phenotypic, genomic (additive, nonadditive), and large-scale environmental (enviromic) data into multi-environmental genomic prediction models. These models can also account for genotype-by-environment interaction, utilize alternative relationship matrices (kernels), or substitute statistical approaches with deep learning. However, the application of multi-environmental genomic prediction in apple remained limited

Model Selection: Finding the Right Fit.

There are numerous possible goals for building statistical models. Those statistical goals, the associated model types, and each statistical tool involved in model building come with its own assumptions and requirements. In turn, these requirements must be met if we are to ensure that our models produce meaningful, interpretable results. However, beyond these technical details is the intuition, and the additional set of tools and algorithms, used by the statistician, to build the contextually appropriate model: not only must we build an interpretable model, we must build a model that answers t

Conduction velocity distribution estimation using the collision technique for assessing carpal tunnel syndrome.

A technique for selectively activating nerve fibers based on their diameter using the collision technique and evaluating nerve integrity using a conduction velocity distribution (CVD) estimator is discussed in this paper. This study is aimed at improving current diagnostic techniques used for assessing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Current nerve conduction studies are influenced by the activity of the largest fibers active at the moment of recording and it is not possible to selectively analyze the functioning of smaller nerve fibers. According to the literature, the severity of CTS progresses

Factor Tree Copula Models for Item Response Data.

Factor copula models for item response data are more interpretable and fit better than (truncated) vine copula models when dependence can be explained through latent variables, but are not robust to violations of conditional independence. To circumvent these issues, truncated vines and factor copula models for item response data are joined to define a combined model, the so-called factor tree copula model, with individual benefits from each of the two approaches. Rather than adding factors and causing computational problems and difficulties in interpretation and identification, a truncated vin

Considering between- and within-person relations in auto-regressive cross-lagged panel models for developmental data.

Longitudinal data can provide inferences at both the between-person and within-person levels of analysis, but only to the extent that the statistical models chosen for data analysis are specified to adequately capture these distinct sources of association. The present work focuses on auto-regressive cross-lagged panel models, which have long been used to examine time-lagged reciprocal relations and mediation among multiple variables measured repeatedly over time. Unfortunately, many common implementations of these models fail to distinguish between-person associations among individual differen
