BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury is a complication that can occur after general anesthesia. It significantly impairs the patient's quality of life and may lead to permanent disability. Nerves in several areas can be damaged during the perioperative period, but it is very rare that numbness of the lower lip is caused after general anesthesia.
CASE: A 73-year-old man with diabetes mellitus underwent urological surgery under general anesthesia. The day after surgery, he complained of numbness on the right lower lip caused by a mental nerve injury. Diabetic mononeuropathy or neurapraxia relate

A 74-year-old woman with a history of asthma and allergic rhinitis rapidly developed multiple mononeuropathy. Although anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies were negative, the presence of eosinophilia and eosinophilic infiltrations in the sural nerve led to a diagnosis of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis. A motor nerve conduction study on admission revealed conduction block, which promptly disappeared after initiating immunotherapy without findings suggestive for remyelination or axonal degeneration. This electrophysiological change distinct from that of Wallerian degeneration. A

Intraneural hematomas are an uncommon cause of a focal mononeuropathy. When they do occur, it is usually in the setting of inherited or iatrogenic coagulopathies or as a consequence of injections targeting nerves. We report a man aged 68 years on warfarin therapy for a prior pulmonary embolism who presented with a 6-month history of progressive weakness of knee flexion and ankle movement, excruciating pain, and dense numbness in his posterior left thigh and below the knee, consistent with a severe high sciatic palsy. Imaging depicted a contiguous cystic mass of mixed T1 and T2 intensities invo

Notalgia paresthetica is a sensory mononeuropathy caused by compression localized in the dorsal region. The condition is clinically characterised by the presence of pruritus, paresthesias and hyperalgesia associated with a hyperpigmented patch in the correspondingt dermatoma, substantially impairing quality of life. We report the cases of two patients aged between 35 and 65years with chronic symptoms and treated in our service with botulinum toxin type A in the affected areas. We observed a decrease in the EVA pain scale and the intensity of the pruritus after infiltrations, as well as a reduc

Mononeuropathy after surgery may occur and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies is a possible pathological condition related to paresis after hip surgery. We present a case of 66-year-old man presenting severe weakness at inferior limb muscles after hip prosthesis revision. Clinic and electrophysiology showed severe right fibular nerve damage and ultrasound found a marked enlargement of the same nerve, associated with focal enlargements in other nerves. A diagnosis of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies was suspected and confirmed by genetic test. The p

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an overview of the most common peripheral neuropathic disorders in pregnancy with a focus on clinical recognition, diagnosis, and treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: The literature on this topic consists primarily of case reports, case series, and retrospective reviews. Recent work, particularly in carpal tunnel syndrome, brachial neuritis, and inherited neuropathies in pregnancy, has added to our knowledge of this field. Awareness of diabetic polyneuropathy with associated autonomic dysfunction in pregnancy has grown as the incidence of diabetes mellitus incr

Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsy (HNPP) is an autosomal dominant disorder and is usually characterized by episodes of recurrent and painless focal motor and sensory peripheral mononeuropathy. This condition is usually localized around areas of entrapment (predominantly the wrists, knees, elbows, and shoulders). The genetic locus of the disease is chromosome 17p12. A deletion of the PMP22 gene results in the lack of peripheral myelin protein, a key component to the myelin sheet of peripheral nerves. However, this disease may be completely asymptomatic until an event, such

Queen Maria de' Medici (1573-1642) died in a miserable, marasmic state. Infections, gangrene, weight loss, fatigue and respiratory problems suggest a progressive decompensation of a previously existing Type 2 diabetes. The lack of biochemical data, however, permits only circumstantial evidence of this hypothesis. The author proposes that the queen developed subclinical diabetes after the age of 45, when she became obese due to excessive eating and lack of exercise. With a clear familial predisposition, she could have become insulin resistant and chronically hyperglycaemic. The presence of an i

Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating disease limited to the central nervous system, but the literature has provided recurring evidence which raises the question of associated peripheral nervous system abnormalities. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy during multiple sclerosis remains controversial without prospective study. Nevertheless, some data have reported well documented case reports describing the co-occurrence of multiple sclerosis and radiculopathy or mononeuropathy or polyneuropathy in the same patients. By contrast, more frequent subtle nerve abnormalities may be found by usin

The antinociceptive effect of i.v. kelatorphan (2.5, 5, 10 and 15 mg/kg), a mixed inhibitor of enkephalin degrading enzymes, was studied in a rat model of peripheral unilateral mononeuropathy (chronic constriction of the common sciatic nerve). Kelatorphan at 2.5 and 5 mg/kg had no significant effect on the vocalization threshold to paw pressure test, but higher doses (10 mg/kg) produced a significant antinociceptive effect which plateaued at 15 mg/kg, on both hindpaws. Kelatorphan (10 mg/kg) was co-injected with the specific mu-, delta- and kappa-opioid receptor antagonists naloxone (0.1 mg/kg

The pathogenic mechanisms underlying Lyme disease remain uncertain but an increasing number of reports suggest a vascular inflammatory process. On the other hand, the so-called systemic vasculitides, even though they remain of pathological definition, have recently been characterized by the presence, in the serum, of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). We report on a patient, finally diagnosed as having neuroborreliosis, who presented initially with multiple mononeuropathy, ANCA, vascular lesions at muscle biopsy and lymphocytic meningitis. Despite antibiotherapy, he presented with

Peripheral nervous system involvement is a possible manifestation of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). We present a case of a 48-year-old female patient with known AAV presenting with refractory left thigh pain. She underwent extensive workup for musculoskeletal, spinal, and vascular causes of her pain that were all unrevealing. Physical examination localized her pain to the femoral nerve, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pelvis with neurography revealed findings consistent with femoral neuritis. She was promptly started on immunosuppressive tre

Tuberculum sellae meningioma (TSM) is an uncommon tumor among all intracranial meningiomas. As these tumors grow, they compress the surrounding structures, including the optic nerves and the pituitary gland. Ocular motor nerve palsy (OMNP) can occur as an isolated mononeuropathy or as part of multiple cranial nerve palsies. The role of corticosteroids in the management of OMNP has not been fully studied in the literature. In this report, we present a case of a previously well middle-aged woman who presented with severe headache and isolated OMNP on examination. MRI of the brain showed a small

Neurotoxicity is one of the more serious immune-related adverse events (irAEs) linked to immune checkpoint inhibitors and calls for prompt diagnosis and treatment. We describe a case of posttreatment anti-programmed death-1 immune checkpoint inhibitor pembrolizumab-induced oculomotor, optic, and trigeminal neuropathy in an 84-year-old female patient with recurrent pulmonary adenocarcinoma. After she received 13 cycles of pembrolizumab, she experienced hyponatremia, anorexia, and right ptosis. There were signs of the suspected irAEs of pembrolizumab, including trigeminal neuropathy, optic neuro

Bell's palsy is the most common mononeuropathy that causes acute unilateral facial paralysis or paresis. The condition peaks within 72 h and may be associated with numerous signs and symptoms, including post-auricular pain, drooping of the eyelid, loss of taste sensation and decreased lacrimation. Although the etiology of the condition is unknown, inflammation, viral infection, ischemia and anatomy of the facial nerve have all been implicated in the pathophysiology of the disease. Diagnosis and determination of etiology are significant in the early management of this condition. Most incidents

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral mononeuropathy related to entrapment syndrome. An increase in the median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) is visualized using ultrasound (US) imaging for CTS patients. This study aims to correlate, for the first time in the state of Qatar, the findings of US imaging and electromyography (EMG) in patients with CTS for diagnostic and classification purposes. First, US CSA was numerically obtained from patients' records. Second, EMG findings were gathered as normal, mild, moderate, and severe CTS. After that, we performed a different stat
