Dengue virus (DENV) poses an escalating public health threat in both endemic and non-endemic regions, driven by globalization, urbanization, and climate change. Early detection of dengue outbreaks remains a critical component in mitigating the impact of this rapidly spreading arboviral disease. Traditional surveillance approaches rely primarily on clinical case reports, which often lag behind the actual onset of transmission. Because of the lag, intensive vector control response would be delayed and become ineffective to contain the transmission promptly. This calls for the need for mosquito-b

BACKGROUND: The dispersal of Aedes aegypti is influenced by anthropogenic features of urban environments and climatic factors. Miami-Dade County is undergoing rapid urban expansion, creating favorable conditions that support the proliferation of Ae. aegypti. In response to this heightened entomological risk and the continued occurrence of dengue transmission, strengthened vector control programs are essential. Effective mosquito control requires a detailed understanding of vector dispersal ecology. In this study, we aimed to estimate the dispersal parameters of local Ae. aegypti populations in…

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the principal mosquito vectors in Tamil Nadu transmitting the major arboviral diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and Yellow Fever. Aedes aegypti serves as the primary vector, followed by Aedes albopictus. Due to the limitations and environmental concerns associated with predictable chemical larvicides, there is an emergency need for alternative and sustainable vector control strategies.
METHODS: In this study, environmentally friendly silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Escherichia coli through a biogenic approach that develop

Indoor residual insecticide spraying and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets have undoubtedly led to a significant reduction in the global malaria burden. However, insecticide resistance poses a threat to the effectiveness of these recommended control methods. In the present study, the aim was to determine the efficacy of SumiShield® 50WG (Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan), an insecticide containing clothianidin, a neonicotinoid, in controlling malaria vectors in Madagascar. The study was conducted over 9 months after the initial spraying in experimental huts made with walls c

A country with continental dimensions like Brazil, characterized by heterogeneity of climates, biomes, natural resources, population density, socioeconomic conditions, and regional challenges, also exhibits significant spatial variation in dengue outbreaks. This study aimed to characterize Brazilian territory based on epidemiological and climate data to determine the optimal time to guide preventive and control strategies. To achieve this, the Moving Epidemics Method (MEM) was employed to analyze dengue historical patterns using 14-year disease data (2010-2023) aggregated by the 120 Brazilian

Mosquitoes are one of the most prolific disease vectors in nature, transmitting many infectious diseases, such as dengue, malaria, and yellow fever. Vector eradication campaigns are failing due to the increasing insecticide resistance shown by mosquito populations, causing efficacy loss of currently available chemistries due to their limited mode of action. Natural products (NPs) are chemistries with diverse chemical structures and potential unique modes of action for mosquito control. Here, we report the results of a high-content phenotypic screen of 3680 chemistries from the AnalytiCon Disco…

BACKGROUND: In the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), new vector-control tools are needed to target mosquitoes that bite outside during the daytime and night-time to advance malaria elimination.
METHODS: We conducted systematic literature searches to generate a bionomic dataset of the main malaria vectors in the GMS, including human blood index (HBI), parity proportion, sac proportion (proportion with uncontracted ovary sacs, indicating the amount of time until they returned to host seeking after oviposition) and the resting period duration. We then performed global sensitivity analyses to asses

Sustainable reductions in African malaria transmission require innovative tools for mosquito control. One proposal involves the use of low-threshold gene drive in Anopheles vector species, where a 'causal pathway' would be initiated by (i) the release of a gene drive system in target mosquito vector species, leading to (ii) its transmission to subsequent generations, (iii) its increase in frequency and spread in target mosquito populations, (iv) its simultaneous propagation of a linked genetic trait aimed at reducing vectorial capacity for Plasmodium, and (v) reduced vectorial capacity for par…

Controlling the principal African malaria vector, the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, is considered essential to curtail malaria transmission. However, existing vector control technologies rely on insecticides, which are becoming increasingly ineffective. Sterile insect technique (SIT) is a powerful suppression approach that has successfully eradicated a number of insect pests, yet the A. gambiae toolkit lacks the requisite technologies for its implementation. SIT relies on iterative mass releases of nonbiting, nondriving, sterile males which seek out and mate with monandrous wild females. Once ma

OBJECTIVE.: Motivation for the study. Dengue prevention and control is based on the control of its vector. This study was conducted because of the need to know the costs associated with Aedes aegypti control in a region that carries out planned vector control activities. Main findings. The costs incurred in dengue vector control in the Loreto region in 2017 and 2018 amounted to PEN 4,066,380.25 and PEN 3,807,858.73, respectively. Implications. Knowing the cost of vector control activities will allow us to better plan these activities and have a basis for cost-effectiveness studies with other m

Aedes albopictus, known as the Asian tiger mosquito, is a significant vector for dengue fever, chikungunya, zika virus, yellow fever. Current control methods rely on chemical insecticides, which face challenges such as resistance, environmental harm, and impact on non-target species Eudrilus eugeniae and Artemia salina. This study evaluates the toxic effects of biogenic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) synthesized using Metarhizium robertsii intracellular extract obtained from our previous research. The CuNPs were tested against A. albopictus and non-target species at 24 and 48 hours post-treatmen

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is one of the most prevalent mosquito-borne diseases in Cambodia. Until now, no specific vaccine nor antiviral treatment exists the virus causing Dengue fever. Consequently, its prevention relies only on vector control strategies. However, efficient vector control in turn relies on a good knowledge of the biology of the vector species. Therefore, this study aims to provide the first review of the distribution, ecology, meteorological impacts, trophic behavior, vector competence, vector control and insecticide resistance of dengue vector species in Cambodia.

Contact insecticides are primarily used for the control of Anopheles malaria vectors. These chemicals penetrate mosquito legs and other appendages; the first barriers to reaching their neuronal targets. An ATP-Binding Cassette transporter from the H family (ABCH2) is highly expressed in Anopheles coluzzii legs, and further induced upon insecticide exposure. RNAi-mediated silencing of the ABCH2 caused a significant increase in deltamethrin mortality compared to control mosquitoes, coincident with a corresponding increase in 14C-deltamethrin penetration. RT-qPCR analysis and immunolocalization r

BACKGROUND: Existing control tools have significantly reduced malaria over the past two decades. However, progress has been stalled due to increased resistance in primary vectors and the increasing role of secondary vectors. This study aimed to investigate the impact of seasonal change on primary and secondary vector abundance and host preference. Understanding the impact of seasonal dynamics of primary and secondary vectors on disease transmission will inform effective strategies for vector management and control.
METHODS: Vector abundance was measured through longitudinal collection of mosq

BACKGROUND: Estimating human exposure to mosquito vectors is crucial for the prediction of malaria transmission and intervention impact. The human landing catch method is frequently used to directly measure estimate exposure rates; however, there has been an increasing shift from this method to exposure-free alternatives, such as the mosquito electrocuting traps (MET) and other approaches. While these latter methods can provide robust and representative values of human exposure and mosquito density, they often still require a human volunteer, which poses logistical challenges. Additionally, in

BACKGROUND: Monitoring the biological attributes of mosquitoes is critical for understanding pathogen transmission and estimating the impacts of vector control interventions on the survival of vector species. Infrared spectroscopy and machine learning techniques are increasingly being tested for this purpose and have been proven to accurately predict the age, species, blood-meal sources, and pathogen infections in Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes. However, as these techniques are still in early-stage implementation, there are no standardized procedures for handling samples prior to the infrared

Over the last decade, the release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti into the natural habitat of this mosquito species has become the most sustainable and long-lasting technique to prevent and control vector-borne diseases, such as dengue, zika, or chikungunya. However, the limited resources to generate such mosquitoes and their effective distribution in large areas dominated by the Aedes aegypti vector represent a challenge for policymakers. Here, we introduce a mathematical framework for the spread of dengue in which competition between wild and Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, the cross-cont
