Ocular torsion as a test of the asymmetry hypothesis of space motion sickness.

Disconjugate eye torsion induced by 0 G and 1.8 G during parabolic flight was studied in nine former astronauts in 1990 and eight in 1991, four of whom were included in the previous experiment. The astronauts could be divided into two statistically significant groups on the basis of low and high scores of disconjugacy. When their histories of space motion sickness (SMS) were later revealed, all of the low scorers had not been sick on previous space flights; all the high scorers had had SMS. These data give support to the hypothesis that SMS in one-half or two-thirds of astronauts is due to an …

[The effect of vestibuloprotectors on the cyclic nucleotide system in experimental motion sickness].

Changes in the blood plasma cyclic nucleotide (cAMP and cGMP) level under the effect of vestibuloprotectors: bemytil and etoxibemytil were studied in rats with experimental motion sickness. It is established that rotation causes increase in the cAMP level and decrease in the cGMP level. The effect of the vestibuloprotectors is determined by the dose of the drug and is aimed first of all at maintaining a stable cAMP level in vestibular exertion. Under conditions of this experiment etoxibemytil was more effective than bemytil.

The effect of a susceptibility to motion sickness on the side effects of cancer chemotherapy.

The adequate management of cancer chemotherapy side effects continues to be a challenging problem. There is considerable variability in the side effects experienced by different patients to the same chemotherapeutic drugs. Clinical observations and previous findings of neuropathways between the vestibular system and vomiting center prompted this case-control study of whether susceptibility to motion sickness is a determinant of the type and magnitude of the side effects resulting from cancer chemotherapy. Eighty-three of 486 (17%) consecutive patients who were receiving chemotherapeutic drugs …

A heuristic mathematical model for the dynamics of sensory conflict and motion sickness.

The etiology of motion sickness is now usually explained in terms of a qualitatively formulated "sensory conflict" hypothesis. By consideration of the information processing task faced by the central nervous system in estimating body spatial orientation and in controlling active body movement using an "internal model" referenced control strategy, a mathematical model for sensory conflict generation is developed. The model incorporates and extends models proposed by von Holst, Held, and Reason, and is congruent with multisensory models for spatial orientation developed by Young and coworkers. T…

[Model of motion sickness in dogs for assessing the effectiveness of pharmacological substances].

The paper describes a model of motion sickness for dogs. The method is based on the simultaneous use of vertical and rotatory movement of the device with a continuously varying angular velocity of rotation to generate Coriolis acceleration. The exposure increases significantly the number of sick animals to be used in the selection of antimotion drugs. Diphenidol, marezine, tigane, bromotigane and metachloropromide were tested. Diphenidol and to a lesser extent marezine and metachloropromide proved effective. Tigane and bromotigane were ineffective against motion sickness.

The effects of self-report rating scales on the assessment of motion sickness.

The assessment of motion sickness typically relies on self-reports. It is unclear whether rating general sickness (e.g., Fast Motion Sickness scale; FMS) or specific symptoms (e.g., Motion Illness Symptoms Classification; MISC) impacts the assessment. Different from prior studies, we investigated how FMS and MISC ratings developed during the same motion exposure. Both scales showed comparable time courses with a similar direction of rating transitions. To investigate the development of nausea versus non-nausea symptoms, participants also rated the MISC2D - a two-dimensional MISC-derivative sep…

The potential use of virtual reality in vestibular rehabilitation of motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) can be triggered by direct or indirect stimuli due to mismatches in the visual-vestibular autonomic pathways. Various studies in the literature have shown that virtual reality technologies can generate provocative stimuli for MS. Therefore, our primary aim is to investigate the usability of virtual reality systems in MS rehabilitation METHODS: 20 normal and 19 MS patients were included. A total of six virtual reality rehabilitation sessions (VRrs) with a game called "Roller Coaster Dreams" playable via PlayStation VR Head Mounted Display were applied thrice a we…

Study of clinical correlation of motion sickness in patients with vestibular migraine.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, clinical data from vestibular migraine (VM) patients and healthy control populations were collected to analyze the clinical data of VM patients, especially the history of motion sickness, and to understand their clinical characteristics. METHODS: According to VM diagnostic criteria, 140 patients diagnosed with confirmed VM (cVM) and probable VM (pVM) who attended the outpatient and inpatient ward of Jiaxing First Hospital between August 2017 and June 2021, as well as 287 healthy check-ups in the health management center, were analyzed and compared in terms of age, ge…

Beyond sensory conflict: The role of beliefs and perception in motion sickness.

Illusory self-motion often provokes motion sickness, which is commonly explained in terms of an inter-sensory conflict that is not in accordance with previous experience. Here we address the influence of cognition in motion sickness and show that such a conflict is not provocative when the observer believes that the motion illusion is indeed actually occurring. Illusory self-motion and motion sickness were elicited in healthy human participants who were seated on a stationary rotary chair inside a rotating optokinetic drum. Participants knew that both chair and drum could rotate but were unawa…

Genetic Analysis of a Large Family with Migraine, Vertigo, and Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common disorder most typically presenting as headache and often associated with vertigo and motion sickness. It is a genetically complex condition with multiple genes ultimately contributing to the predisposition and development of this episodic neurological disorder. We identified a large American family of 29 individuals of which 17 members suffered from at least one of these disorders, migraine, vertigo, or motion sickness. Many of these individuals suffered from several simultaneously. We hypothesized that vertigo and motion sickness may involve genes that are ind…
