Exploring the Antimicrobial Activity of Sodium Titanate Nanotube Biomaterials in Combating Bone Infections: An In Vitro and In Vivo Study.

The majority of bone and joint infections are caused by Gram-positive organisms, specifically staphylococci. Additionally, gram-negative organisms such as E. coli can infect various organs through infected wounds. Fungal arthritis is a rare condition, with examples including Mucormycosis (Mucor rhizopus). These infections are difficult to treat, making the use of novel antibacterial materials for bone diseases crucial. Sodium titanate nanotubes (NaTNTs) were synthesized using the hydrothermal method and characterized using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), High-Resolution …

A case report of cutaneous mucormycosis of the hand after minor trauma in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening infection, caused by fungi of the Mucorales order, which can be found in soil, rotting leaves or on animals. Through characteristic angioinvasive growth, infections with mucor spores can occur as a pulmonary, rhinocerebral or cutaneous form. Infections mainly affect immunosuppressed patients with a history of uncontrolled diabetes or haematological malignancies, among others. Treatment is multimodal and requires an immediate combination of intravenous amphotericin B therapy and serial surgical debridements. Only a limited number of cases …

Burn injuries and soft tissue traumas complicated by mucormycosis infection: a report of six cases and review of the literature.

Mucor fungus infection is a rare opportunistic infection, rapidly progressive and often fatal in immunocompromised patients, or in patients with chronic debilitating diseases. We report six cases of trauma patients with mucormycosis. Three had severe thermal burns, one of them with a medical history of diabetes mellitus. The other three patients suffered from severe soft tissue injuries caused by traffic accidents. In all cases there had been spontaneous exposure and contact of the wounds with soil. During hospitalization, fungi cultures and/or biopsies of all wounds were performed and all res…

Mucormycosis of the renal allograft: case report and review of the literature.

Fungal infection is an uncommon complication after renal transplantation. We describe a rare form of mucormycosis in the renal graft. Our method was to review chart data and to perform medline searches. The patient was a 42-year-old man who underwent living-unrelated kidney transplantation in Egypt and returned to Israel on POD 8. Within the ensuing 4 weeks he experienced acute rejection which responded to treatment with steroids. Few days after discharge he was readmitted because of fever and graft dysfunction. An infected large perigraft collection was drained, but the patient became anuric …

Use of the extended Phadebas RAST panel in the diagnosis of mould allergy in asthmatic children.

The clinical significance of mould allergens in Phadebas RAST panel was investigated in 121 asthmatic children. They were selected from a total population of 1649 patients. The patients were distributed into four groups, based on the combination of positive or negative skin prick tests (SPT) together with symptoms suggestive or not of mould sensitivity. Mould-specific IgE antibodies were investigated using the original RAST panel (Alternaria, Aspergillus, Candida, Cladosporium, Mucor and Penicillium) and a set of 10 additional mould-allergen discs (Aureobasidium, Botrytis, Curvularia, Epicoccu…

Case Report: Intra-abdominal Mucormycosis Diagnosed at the Time of Liver Transplantation for Surgically Induced Acute Liver Failure.

Mucormycosis is an aggressive fungal infection associated with high mortality, particularly among recipients of solid organ transplants. Gastrointestinal involvement is rare but can be fatal due to delayed diagnosis and limited therapeutic options. We report on a 59-year-old female who developed intra-abdominal mucormycosis that was diagnosed during orthotopic liver transplantation. She initially presented with a perforated duodenal ulcer requiring emergent surgical repair and subsequently developed acute liver failure due to an iatrogenic transection of the portal triad. She underwent urgent …

Increased virulence of Zygomycetes organisms following exposure to voriconazole: a study involving fly and murine models of zygomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Breakthrough zygomycosis is increasingly observed among patients at high risk for fungal infection who are receiving voriconazole, reflecting either selective pressure or voriconazole-associated alterations in Zygomycetes virulence. We tested the latter hypothesis, using 2 phylogenetically disparate zygomycosis models. METHODS: Three Zygomycetes strains were exposed to voriconazole by serial passages on voriconazole-containing medium. The virulence of voriconazole-exposed Zygomycetes strains was compared with that of voriconazole-nonexposed strains in Drosophila and murine models

[Evaluation of zygomycosis cases by pooled analysis method reported from Turkey].

Zygomycosis is a rapidly-progressive invasive fungal disease with high mortality rates. Mucor, Rhizopus, Rhizomucor and Absidia species classified in Mucorales order, are the main causative agents of zygomycosis. Uncontrolled diabetes, hematologic malignancies, long term corticosteroid use and immunosuppressive therapies are the main predisposing factors for mucormycosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the mucormycosis cases from Turkey published in national and international databases in the last 17 years by means of age, gender, co-morbidities, signs and symptoms, diagnostic methods, th…

Comparative Proteomics of Extracellular Vesicles of Two Species of Mucorales Reveals Species-Specific Cargo.

Rhizopus arrhizus is one of the most common etiological agents of mucormycosis worldwide, whereas Mucor irregularis has been reported with a relatively high frequency in China, exhibiting clear regional characteristics. However, the molecular basis underlying their differential host responses remains incompletely understood. Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) play diverse biological roles across fungal species and have emerged as important carriers of bioactive cargos that modulate host-pathogen interactions. In this study, we compared features of EVs derived from R. arrhizus and M. irregular…

Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted by Fungi Have Substantial Effects on Growth and Disease Resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by certain fungi have previously been suggested to modulate plant development and their response to stresses. While some fungal species, such as Trichoderma harzianum, are known to produce VOCs, the production of VOCs in other phylogenetically divergent species, such as Mucor mucedo, was previously unknown. This study aimed to analyse the VOCs profiles emitted by these fungal species and examine their effects on the growth and defensive responses of Arabidopsis thaliana. Volatilome analysis revealed that the most abundant VOCs for both species were alc…

Real-life experience on the use of isavuconazole in solid organ transplantation.

Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients have a higher risk of developing invasive fungal infection (IFI). Isavuconazole is a novel broad-spectrum azole active against Aspergillus and Mucor. Isavuconazole is well tolerated, shows an excellent bioavailability and predictable pharmacokinetics, good diffusion to tissues, significantly reduced drug-drug interactions with immunosuppressive drugs in comparison with other broad-spectrum azoles, and few serious adverse effects, including hepatic toxicity. We have performed an extensive literature review concerning the clinical experience on the use of …
