Impact of maternal late hospital arrival on adverse outcome of offspring affected by placental abruption: A regional multicenter nested case-control study in Japan.

AIMS: To elucidate the influence of the time-intervals between the onset and arrival (TIME 1), onset and delivery (TIME 2), and the decision to deliver and delivery (TIME 3) on severe adverse outcomes of offspring born to mothers complicated by placental abruption outside the hospital. METHODS: This is a multicenter nested case-control study about placental abruption at Fukui Prefecture, a regional area in Japan, through 2013 to 2017. Multiple pregnancy, fetal or neonatal congenital abnormality, and unknown detailed information at onset of placental abruption were excluded. A composite of per

Contemporary issues surrounding folic Acid fortification initiatives.

The impact of folate on health and disease, particularly pregnancy complications and congenital malformations, has been extensively studied. Mandatory folic acid fortification therefore has been implemented in multiple countries, resulting in a reduction in the occurrence of neural tube defects. However, emerging evidence suggests increased folate intake may also be associated with unexpected adverse effects. This literature review focuses on contemporary issues of concern, and possible underlying mechanisms as well as giving consideration the future direction of mandatory folic acid fortifica

Raine eye health study: design, methodology and baseline prevalence of ophthalmic disease in a birth-cohort study of young adults.

PURPOSE: The Raine Eye Health Study (REHS) was conceived to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for eye disease in young adults, and to characterize ocular biometric parameters in a young adult cohort. This article summarizes the rationale and study design of REHS and outlines the baseline prevalence of ophthalmic disease in this population. METHODS: The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study originated as a randomized-controlled trial of 2900 women recruited from the state's largest maternity hospital. Their offspring (N = 2868) have been followed at birth, ages 1, 2, 3,

The essential role of centrosomal NDE1 in human cerebral cortex neurogenesis.

We investigated three families whose offspring had extreme microcephaly at birth and profound mental retardation. Brain scans and postmortem data showed that affected individuals had brains less than 10% of expected size (≤10 standard deviation) and that in addition to a massive reduction in neuron production they displayed partially deficient cortical lamination (microlissencephaly). Other body systems were apparently unaffected and overall growth was normal. We found two distinct homozygous mutations of NDE1, c.83+1G>T (p.Ala29GlnfsX114) in a Turkish family and c.684_685del (p.Pro229TrpfsX85

Maternal use of venlafaxine near term: correlation between neonatal effects and plasma concentrations.

The nature of neonatal adverse effects in the offspring after maternal use of venlafaxine at term is not fully understood. We correlated neonatal clinical signs over time with serum concentrations of venlafaxine and its active metabolite in the neonatal period. Women exposed to venlafaxine near term, and their neonates, were studied. Adverse neonatal signs and serum concentrations of venlafaxine and its active metabolite were assessed. Seven mother-child pairs were studied. Median maternal venlafaxine dose was 75 mg/d (37.5-300 mg/d). Five neonates presented with multiple clinical signs during

Metal exposure and blood lipid biomarkers in early pregnancy: A cross-sectional study.

Recognizing the risk factors for dyslipidemia during pregnancy is crucial for safeguarding the health of both the mothers and the offspring. Growing evidence emerged and suggested links between environmental factors, including metals, and alteration in lipid levels or dyslipidemia in general populations. However, knowledge of the associations during pregnancy remains extremely lacking. Herein, we aimed to explore whether elevated metal exposure constitutes a risk factor for dyslipidemia in pregnant women. Based on the Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort (TSBC), a total of 663 pregnant women were rec

Prenatal dietary exposure to chemicals and allergy or respiratory diseases in children in the EDEN mother-child cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal exposure to food chemicals may increase the risk of allergy and respiratory disorders in offspring. We aimed to assess the association of prenatal dietary exposure to single chemicals and chemical mixtures with allergy or respiratory events reported before age 8 y in children. METHODS: We included 1428 mother-child pairs enrolled in the EDEN mother-child cohort. Maternal dietary exposure to 209 chemicals and eight associated mixtures was investigated. Allergic and respiratory diseases (wheezing, asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema and food allergy) were reported by parent

Effect of maternal multiple micronutrient supplements on cord blood hormones: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth improves in pregnant women who take daily maternal multiple micronutrients [United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Preparation (UNIMMAP)] rather than iron and folic acid (IFA) alone. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to test whether such an effect was mediated by changes in concentrations of cord hormones. DESIGN: In a double-blind, controlled trial carried out in Burkina Faso, we randomly assigned 1426 pregnant women to receive UNIMMAP or IFA supplements. We measured concentrations of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), leptin, insulin, free thyroxine, and

Assessment of ovulation synchronization protocols in goats and use of pregnancy specific protein B (PSPB) enzyme linked immunsorbent assay (ELISA) to determine kid number at birth.

The efficacy of several protocols for ovulation synchronization and timed artificial insemination (TAI) in goats was examined. In addition, the relationship between levels of pregnancy specific protein B (PSPB) during gestation assessed with a commercially available ELISA and the number of offspring at birth was determined. In Experiment 1, 70 does were randomized into four treatments: (1) breed by estrus [BBE], (2) 6-d treatment with a new [C6N], (3) once-used [C61], or (4) twice-used Controled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) device [C62)]. BBE does received two 15 mg doses of prostaglandin-F2α

Congenital thyrotoxicosis in premature infants.

OBJECTIVES: Graves' disease (GD) complicates 0.1% to 0.2% of pregnancies, but congenital thyrotoxicosis is rare occurring in one in 70 of these pregnancies independent of maternal disease status. Antenatal prediction of affected infants is imprecise; however, maternal history, coupled with a high maternal serum TSH receptor binding immunoglobulin index (TBII) predict adverse neonatal outcome. Mortality is reported to be as high as 25% in affected infants and would therefore be expected to be higher in premature infants. This study illustrates that in sick, premature, extreme low birth weight (

Co-occurring maternal emotional well-being and lifestyle profiles from pregnancy to postpartum and offspring developmental outcomes: A prospective cohort study.

Maternal emotional well-being and lifestyle behaviors co-occur during the perinatal period, yet most studies examine them separately. Using data collected since 2019 from the Longitudinal Examination Across Prenatal and Postpartum Health in Taiwan, a prospective cohort of 539 mother-child dyads, we assessed maternal depressive symptoms, eudaimonic well-being, fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, and sleep duration from early pregnancy to 2 years postpartum. Group-based multi-trajectory modeling identified co-occurring maternal profiles. Birth weight was analyzed with multiple linear

Design, rationale and protocol for Glycemic Observation and Metabolic Outcomes in Mothers and Offspring (GO MOMs): an observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Given the increasing prevalence of both obesity and pre-diabetes in pregnant adults, there is growing interest in identifying hyperglycaemia in early pregnancy to optimise maternal and perinatal outcomes. Multiple organisations recommend first-trimester diabetes screening for individuals with risk factors; however, the benefits and drawbacks of detecting glucose abnormalities more mild than overt diabetes in early gestation and the best screening method to detect such abnormalities remain unclear. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The goal of the Glycemic Observation and Metabolic Outcomes

Maternal Smoking and Congenital Heart Defects, National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997-2011.

OBJECTIVES: To assess associations between maternal smoking and congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective case-control study using data for cases of CHD (n = 8339) and nonmalformed controls (n = 11 020) from all years (1997-2011) of the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. Maternal self-reported smoking 1 month before through 3 months after conception was evaluated as a binary (none, any) and categorical (light, medium, heavy) exposure. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate aOR and 95% CIs. Stratified analyses were performed

Prenatal Maternal Stress and the Cascade of Risk to Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders in Offspring.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Disruptions in fetal development (via genetic and environmental pathways) have been consistently associated with risk for schizophrenia in a variety of studies. Although multiple obstetric complications (OCs) have been linked to schizophrenia, this review will discuss emerging evidence supporting the role of prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) in the etiology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). In addition, findings linking PNMS to intermediate phenotypes of the disorder, such as OCs and premorbid cognitive, behavioral, and motor deficits, will be reviewed. Maternal immun

Combined food and micronutrient supplements during pregnancy have limited impact on child blood pressure and kidney function in rural Bangladesh.

Observational evidence suggests nutritional exposures during in utero development may have long-lasting consequences for health; data from interventions are scarce. Here, we present a trial follow-up study to assess the association between prenatal food and micronutrient supplementation and childhood blood pressure and kidney function. During the MINIMat Trial in rural Bangladesh, women were randomly assigned early in pregnancy to receive an early or later invitation to attend a food supplementation program and additionally to receive either iron and folate or multiple micronutrient tablets da

Nitrosatable drug exposure during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcome.

Recent investigations have suggested that drugs that are amines can undergo endogenous or exogenous nitrosation reactions to form N-nitroso compounds. These compounds have been extensively characterized in animal models as carcinogens, mutagens and teratogens. In order to examine the possible effects of exposure to nitrosatable drugs during gestation on pregnancy outcome, data were utilized from the Collaborative Perinatal Project of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. Pregnancy outcomes for 6061 pregnancies in which the mother ingested a drug known t

Maternal vomiting during early pregnancy and cardiovascular risk factors at school age: the Generation R Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that low birth weight and fetal exposure to extreme maternal undernutrition is associated with cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Hyperemesis gravidarum, a clinical entity characterized by severe nausea and excess vomiting leading to a suboptimal maternal nutritional status during early pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Several studies also showed that different measures related to hyperemesis gravidarum, such as maternal daily vomiting or severe weight loss, are associated with increased risks of adverse fetal pregna

DNA polymorphism-diet-cofactor-development hypothesis and the gene-teratogen model for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders.

Three problems in identifying genes causing schizophrenia and other developmental disorders may be locus heterogeneity, high disease allele frequency, and unknown mode of inheritance. The DNA polymorphism-diet-cofactor-development (DDCD) hypothesis addresses the first two. The gene-teratogen model addresses the third. The DDCD hypothesis is that schizophrenia results in part from brain abnormality in utero from the aggregate effect of multiple mutations of small effect of genes related to important cofactors (e.g., folate, cobalamin, or pyridoxine) potentiated by maternal dietary deficiency of

Cord plasma metabolomic signatures of prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposures in the Boston Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposures are associated with adverse offspring health outcomes, yet the underlying pathological mechanisms are unclear. Cord blood metabolomics can identify potentially important pathways associated with prenatal PFAS exposures, providing mechanistic insights that may help explain PFAS' long-term health effects. METHODS: The study included 590 mother-infant dyads from the Boston Birth Cohort. We measured PFAS in maternal plasma samples collected 24-72 h after delivery and metabolites in cord plasma samples. We used metabolome-wid

The association of serum total bile acid with new-onset hypertension during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in the interrelationship between the liver and hypertension. The relationship between serum total bile acid (TBA) and hypertension has been reported. Moreover, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy was correlated to gestation hypertension. However, the association between maternal serum TBA level in the normal range and new-onset hypertension disorders during pregnancy remains unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal serum TBA level in the normal range and the risk, disease severity and adverse pregnancy out
