Central fatigue is greater than peripheral fatigue in people with joint hypermobility syndrome.

PURPOSE: People with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) suffer with fatigue. The purpose of this project was to investigate the contribution of central and peripheral fatigue. METHODS: Electrical stimulation of the musculocutaneous nerve to biceps brachii, and transcranial magnetic stimulation over the motor cortex supplying biceps brachii were used. Peripheral and central fatigue were assessed during a control, fatiguing and recovery phase protocol. RESULTS: JHS participants perceived greater fatigue during the protocol compared to a control group and did not recover. Central and peripheral

Task Failure in Endurance Sports: A Review.

Task failure in endurance sports represents a complex and multifaceted phenomenon likely arising from the dynamic and intricate interaction between peripheral and central mechanisms. Traditional models of fatigue have long emphasized a gradual and inevitable decline in performance because of metabolic, neuromuscular, and cardiovascular limitations. Research has also highlighted that task failure may not only be a product of this progressive deterioration but could also result from acute and unpredictable disruptions at the central level (e.g., psychological factors such as perceived effort) th

Distinct structural and functional angiogenic responses are induced by different mechanical stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: Adequacy of the microcirculation is essential for maintaining repetitive skeletal muscle function while avoiding fatigue. It is u … NCLUSION: Targeted capillary growth in response to abluminal stretch is a potent driver of improved muscle fatigue resistance, while shear stress-driven angiogenesis has no beneficial effect on muscle function. In terms of capillarity, more is not necessarily better.

Tongue protrusion force and fatiguability in male and female subjects.

Limb and respiratory muscle (diaphragm) strength and fatiguability have been extensively studied in man and are known to vary with age and sex. However, in contrast to limb muscles and the diaphragm, force and fatiguability characteristics have not been studied in upper airway muscles. This study examines the hypotheses that tongue protrusion strength or fatiguability, determined by the properties of the intrinsic muscles and genioglossus, may change with age and may be reduced in males compared to females. A force transducer was used to compare maximal tongue protrusion force (Fmax) and fatig

Inspiratory pressure support prevents diaphragmatic fatigue during weaning from mechanical ventilation.

Persistent inability to tolerate discontinuation from mechanical ventilation is frequently encountered in patients recovering from acute respiratory failure. We studied the ability of inspiratory pressure support, a new mode of ventilatory assistance, to promote a nonfatiguing respiratory muscle activity in eight patients unsuccessful at weaning from mechanical ventilation. During spontaneous breathing, seven of the eight patients demonstrated electromyographic signs of incipient diaphragmatic fatigue. During ventilation with pressure support at increasing levels, the work of breathing gradual

Bi-modal recovery of quadriceps femoris muscle function after sustained maximum voluntary contraction at different muscle length.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that contractility of quadriceps femoris muscle during a 15-min period after a sustained maximum voluntary contraction for 1 min is determined by the interaction of posttetanic potentiation, metabolic fatigue, and nonmetabolic fatigue. Eleven healthy untrained men (age, 22.9+/-1.8 years; body weight, 77.5+/-5.2 kg) performed isometric 1-min maximum voluntary contraction at long (90 degrees in knee joint) and short (135 degrees in knee joint) muscle length at two different occasions. Contractility of quadriceps femoris muscle was monitored via th

Preliminary results: Effect of whole-body cooling in patients with myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Local muscle cooling has been shown to reduce symptoms in some neuromuscular diseases. PURPOSE: To determine whether lowering body temperature using a cooling vest would result in improvement in muscle strength, subjective perceptions of weakness and fatigue, and pulmonary function in patients with generalized myasthenia gravis (MG). METHODS: Patients (five female, one male) with generalized MG, aged 29-58 yr, were studied when mean body temperature was lowered (34.9 +/- 0.62 degrees C) using a cooling vest (CT) and at normal body temperature (35.8 +/- 0.58 degrees C) (NT). Fatigue rate of the external anal sphincter.

AIM: Studies of skeletal muscle show that fatigue rate corresponds to the proportion of fast-twitch and slow-twitch fibres that are present in the muscle. Limited work has been done on the fatigue rate of the external anal sphincter. We have prospectively studied fatigability of the external anal sphincter in women with faecal incontinence and women with normal bowel control. METHOD: Anorectal manometry was measured by a station-pull technique using a water-filled microballoon. Fatigue rate was calculated from anal pressure measurements taken every 0.1 s over a 20-s squeeze. RESULTS: Women w

Effect of training on skeletal muscle bioenergetic system in patients with mitochondrial myopathies: A computational study.

A computer model of the skeletal muscle bioenergetic system, involving the "Pi double-threshold" mechanism of muscle fatigue, was used to investigate the effect of muscle training on system kinetic properties in mitochondrial myopathies (MM) patients with inborn OXPHOS deficiencies. An increase in OXPHOS activity and decrease in peak Pi can account for the training-induced increase in V̇O2max, acceleration of the primary phase II of the V̇O2 on-kinetics, delay of muscle fatigue and prolongation of exercise at a given work intensity encountered in experimental studies. Depending on the mutation…

Isokinetic strength and endurance of the knee extensors and flexors in trans-tibial amputees.

Significant levels of muscular fatigue alter the co-ordination patterns and the ability to accomplish proper daily functions, especially in patients with initial low levels of strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the strength and endurance of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles in trans-tibial amputees. Concentric strength and endurance of the thigh muscles were measured bilaterally by an isokinetic dynamometer. The measured variables were torque and angle. For the endurance test, a fatigue index was calculated. Peak torque for extension and flexion was significantly higher in

The effects of hip abductor fatigue on gait instability in older adults.

Fatigue is a critical factor governing muscle force responsiveness and, thereby, capacity to respond to balance challenges. Mediolateral stability is crucial for older adults to safely navigate their daily environments and disproportionally requires active control; the hip abductors are the key muscles in regulating lateral foot placement and mediolateral stability. Our study aimed to characterize the effects of hip abductor fatigue on gait instability in a cohort of older adults. We hypothesized that fatigue, as induced by continuous lateral stepping, would compromise mediolateral walking bal

The Effects of Varying Intensities of Unilateral Handgrip Fatigue on Bilateral Movement.

Background/Objectives: The ability to maintain movement quality despite muscle fatigue is essential for daily activities and preserving independence after motor impairments. Many real-life situations involve asymmetrical muscle activation, leading to unilateral muscle fatigue. Repeated unilateral handgrip contractions at submaximal force have been linked to neural changes in both contralateral and ipsilateral motor areas, as well as improved contralateral response times in a button-press task. However, it remains unclear whether these improvements in response latency extend to higher-level ben…

Fatigue-inducing stimulation resolves myotonia in a drug-induced model.

BACKGROUND: Slowed muscle relaxation is the contractile hallmark of myotonia congenita, a disease caused by genetic CLC-1 chloride channel deficiency, which improves with antecedent brief contractions ("warm-up phenomenon"). It is unclear to what extent the myotonia continues to dissipate during continued repetitive contractions and how this relates temporally to muscle fatigue. Diaphragm, EDL, and soleus muscles were examined in vitro during repetitive 20 Hz and 50 Hz train stimulation in a drug-induced (9-AC) rat myotonia model. RESULTS: At the onset of stimulation, 9-AC treated diaphragm a…

The effect of prolonged walking on leg muscle activity patterns and vulnerability to perturbations.

Understanding the consequences and ecological relevance of muscle fatigue is important to guide the development of strategies to preserve independence. However, few studies have examined walking-related fatigue and the effects on walking instability. Our purpose was to investigate the effects of prolonged walking on leg muscle activity and vulnerability to balance perturbations. Eighteen healthy young adults completed a 30-min walking trial at their preferred walking speed while leg muscle activities were recorded. Before and after the 30-min walk, participants responded to five 5% body weight…
