SOLAMEN syndrome is a rare, recently recognized congenital syndrome that is characterized by progressive and hypertrophic diseases involving multiple systems, including segmental overgrowth, lipomatosis, arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and epidermal nevus. According to literatures, SOLAMEN syndrome is caused by heterozygous PTEN mutation. Phenotypic overlap complicates the clinical identification of diseases associated with PTEN heterozygous mutations, making the diagnosis of SOLAMEN more challenging. In addition, SOLAMEN often presents with segmental tissue overgrowth and vascular malformati

Some children exposed at conception to the antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) phenytoin (PHT), phenobarbital (PB), and carbamazepine (CBZ) have changes in their midface and fingers. It has been suggested that the anticonvulsant-exposed child with these subtle changes in facial features (the "anticonvulsant face") has a greater likelihood of having deficits in IQ in comparison with children exposed to the same anticonvulsants who do not have these features. 115 AED-exposed children (40, PHT; 34, PB; and 41, CBZ) between 6.5 and 16 years of age and 111 unexposed children matched by sex, race, and year i

BACKGROUND: Infantile hypotonia with psychomotor retardation and characteristic facies type 3(IHPRF3) (OMIM #616,900) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants of the TBCK gene, and to date, this disease was reported rather limitedly in number and all described cases were Caucasians.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper reported the clinical and genetic features of a Chinese patient with IHPRF3. The patient was a 15-month-old male with global developmental delay, profound hypotonia, and typical facial dysmorphic features including mildly coarse facial appearance, hyp

BACKGROUND: Mutations in SOX6 have recently been recognized as a new molecular cause of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by intellectual disability, behavioral changes, and nonspecific facial and digital skeletal abnormalities. To date, <25 cases have been reported in the literature.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Here we report a new case of SOX6-associated neurodegeneration and expand the phenotype to include ceratoconus. The clinical picture consisted of early onset mildly reduced intellectual function, facial asymmetry, and dystonic tremor of hands and neck, substantially improved by lev

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) orientation including the fused spinopelvic angle (FSPA) on proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PJK is a challenging complication after adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Some studies proposed UIV orientation act as a risk factor of PJK, but there remain debates because UIV orientation is changed by position. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the FSPA, a novel parameter for the relationship between UIV and pelvis which did not change by

BACKGROUND: Proximal junctional kyphosis is a common complication after posterior fusion in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and is correlated with postoperative changes of thoracic kyphosis. In lenke 5c patients, higher postoperative LL and spontaneous change of TK may produce an effect on final PJK. However, no studies has been performed to evaluate the correlation of PJK with thoracocervical parameters in patients with AIS.
METHODS: Data from 98 patients who underwent posterior fusion for Lenke 5C AIS with 2 years of follow-up were retrospectively reviewed. Patients in the ext

OBJECTIVE: To contrast the accuracy of C2 navigation template-assisted versus freehand pedicle and/or pars screw fixation in high-risk cases where a high-riding vertebral artery (VA) or narrow pedicle and complex deformities were associated.
METHODS: In our hospital, computed tomography (CT) data of 30 patients with pathology on C0-1-2, who had risk factors for VA injury, that were complex cervical deformities, atlantoaxial instabilities with narrow C2 pedicle and/or HRVA variations were retrospectively reviewed. Using computer-aided design software and desktop printer we printed 3 sets of hi

INTRODUCTION: CLOVES syndrome is characterized by lipomatous overgrowth associated with vascular malforma tions, representing a diagnostic and a therapeutic challenge. Rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor, has proved to be a good therapeutic option in some vascular anomalies. In this article, we report two ca ses of CLOVES syndrome with good response to oral rapamycin treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To report the outcome of two patients with CLOVES syndrome treated with oral rapamycin.
CLINICAL CASES: Case 1: A three-year-old female preschooler with CLOVES syndrome and history of repeated hospita lizations du

Skin dimples are a common occurrence in children. Besides being of cosmetic significance, they may give an important clue to an underlying genetic or metabolic problem. A simplified location-based algorithmic approach to diagnose the underlying cause of skin dimples is presented. Clinical significance of medically important dimples, especially sacral dimples, its association with occult spinal dysraphism, and a cost-effective diagnostic strategy for its imaging is discussed.

Sternal cleft is a rare anomaly comprising 0.5% of chest wall malformations. We present a case of a neonate with a 'V'-shaped upper partial sternal cleft at birth. A hyperpigmented cutaneous nevi was present over the cleft. Primary approximation and closure of the defect was performed at 1 week of life. We discuss the presentation and management, and review the literature.

Although various congenital abnormalities have been described, congenital absence of calf musculature is extremely rare, with only one report on its complete absence. We are the first to describe a case of congenital absence of muscles of the superficial posterior compartment of the calf presenting in a toddler. The child presented with a history of a painless limp, however no significant difference was found in functional gait analysis. We suggest that such cases should be monitored and parents can be reassured that no immediate treatment is required.

Bovine arachnomelia is an inherited congenital disorder with malformation mainly of the limbs, the vertebral column and the skull, following a monogenic autosomal recessive heredity. Despite almost identical pathological findings, arachnomelia has previously been mapped to bovine chromosome 23 and 5 in Fleckvieh and Braunvieh respectively. Therefore, this disorder may be an example of locus heterogeneity in cattle. This study aimed to refine the candidate region to allow positional cloning and sequence analyses of candidate genes in Fleckvieh cattle. For that purpose, a case-control associatio

The biceps brachii (BB) is as one of the most variable muscles in the human body in terms of number and morphology of its heads. The most frequent variation is the presence of a third head, which has been reported by several authors in different populations. Our aim was to find the occurrence of the supernumerary head of BB in Turkish foetuses. Out of the 24 upper limbs of the foetuses, two (8.33%) arms were found to have a three-headed BB. The variations were present unilaterally in the right arm of one male foetus and one female foetus. In one of the cases, the third head of BB originated fr

Sternalis is an anomalous muscle found occasionally in the anterior part of the thorax. During routine dissection sternalis muscle was found in a male cadaver. This rare anatomic variant is reported in 8% of the population. In the present case, the muscle was found bilaterally, placed obliquely on either side of the sternum. It originated by tendinous fibres from the lower costal cartilages and inserted to the manubriosternal junction. The right side muscle was well developed whereas the left one was reduced in size. The pectoralis major and minor were normal. The knowledge of sternalis is imp

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of congenital anterior chest wall deformities in 11- to 14-year-old students.
METHODS: Students participating in the study were recruited from public schools in the city of Manaus, Brazil. The statistically significant sample (precision, 1%; 95% CI) comprised 1,332 students. Pectus deformities were identified by physical examination of the chest, and the individuals with one of these deformities completed a questionnaire regarding heredity and symptoms resulting from the chest abnormality.
RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 11.7 years. The pr

There is a large and diverse group of congenital abnormalities of the thorax that manifest as deformities and/or defects of the anterior chest wall and, depending on the severity and concomitant anomalies, may have cardiopulmonary implications. Pectus excavatum, the most common anterior chest deformity, is characterized by sternal depression with corresponding leftward displacement and rotation of the heart. Pectus carinatum, the second most common, exhibits a variety of chest wall protrusions and very diverse clinical manifestations. The cause of these conditions is thought to be abnormal elo
